Description
*sighs* alrighty! after having been asked how i make my little sketch books, i decided to make a tutorial. this took me quite a while to put together (too long, oh too long... we're talking HOURS...); and i'm sorry it's illustrated, but a friend is borrowing my camera currently. i am photoless. sorry.at any rate, i hope someone finds this helpful! it's in PDF format for acrobat 5 and above. if you have any questions or anything let me know and i'll do my best to help you out.
***you have to click "download to desktop" to view it, otherwise you're just going to see my cheesy little preview image***
this tutorial was created in adobe indesign cs (paper and card stock texture i created in photoshop but eh). yeeeah. good luck with it.

This is extremely helpful. Though I will likely not be able to attempt this until the summer, or spring break. I'm excited to try this though.

mine wound up being about 2x2 inches x 1/4 inch thick all closed up; but it may wind up different if you're using different sized paper etc.
thank you ^^ let me know if you wind up making one, i'd love to see the outcome!!!

I favorited this so I could try it out but I can't see the file...How sad. Even if I click the "download" button I get a blank page. Must be my comp. Oh well, I need to use the library computers I guess.

aaaw! well, i know you'll need acrobat to view it; the download link should bring it up so... let me know it it works/doesn't work -- if it comes down to it i could always print off a compy and mail it to you (not to be creepy, just making the offer!).

awesome possum!!! thanks for the +fave on it, as well let me know if you run into any hairy points in the making of it (as it's good to know where i'm not good at explaining things; unfortunately i don't have the source file anymore).
i hope the tut serves you well -- enjoy it (and glad i could be of assistance!)

Pretty cool. I was looking around here on dA for an idea just for a little poetry chapbook to prepare as a going away memento for someone and this is the closest thing I have found so far.
Interesting stuff indeed. Too much of an uninitiated person to offer much critique right now, but it seems straightforward and intelligible now. Not sure how it will be when I make my attempt though.

why thank you ^^ my strong recommendation is to make one first with cheap materials etc. so you can get the process down before you set in with intentions of making something polished and perfect.
if you have any questions or problems through the process feel free to ask questions!

nice tutorial... I think you did a nice job explaining everything in plain language so anyone can figure it out. Even though my everyday job is sewing books... so I kinda knew the language to begin with not to toot my own horn or anything, but I have a book in my gallery that you might be interested in: [link]

ooh ^^ so apparently from that book you seem to know what you're doing! heh, well, am i doing this book binding the right way? i scratched the surface of book binding in one of my classes and took off running with it, not entirely sure if i do it the *right* way... but i'm totally going to check out the rest of your gallery now! heh!
where do you work?

magickalmoon In reply to serealis [2006-11-25 05:17:38 +0000 UTC]
lol yeah I have a good bit of guidance for my books. I'm not really familiar with the sewing structure that you use, it looks like it might be similar to the catch stitch that I did with the tapes, but I'm not sure. Usually I use a standard link stitch. As long as your sewing seems secure and doesnt wobble, then I don't think you'll have a problem. I like your idea for the soft cover, I might actually try that some time.
And I work at my University's Library in the conservation department, doing commercial level repairs (aka not preserving the value, just the information and durability). I'm hoping to nudge my way into the world of rare book conservation.

awesome ^^ sounds like a fun job... the repairs that occur at my college consist of tape... no sewing or anything, maybe a smidge of glue if tape won't seem to work, but yeah. tape. >_<

but how do you make PDF's?

serealis In reply to kabrotti [2006-07-22 17:26:54 +0000 UTC]
i have a program i use, indesign, after i make the file i can export it as a pdf. that's the only program i have that i can make multi-page pdfs in (unless i want to get complicated and use adobe distiller, which i also have, but indesign is so much more fun). that said, single page pdfs can be made in photoshop, illustrator, indesign... many programs other than those that i just don't know about...
