Story
As the sun reached past the midpoint in the sky and continued it’s descent to the other side of the planet the somewhat isolated beach started to buzz with people. Children and their parents, couples, and some just curious to see the show gathered around eyeing the horses with new or skilled eyes and watching for favorites or new talent that had found their way to the scene. While it wasn’t Eden’s first show, and neither was it Vega’s, there was still a sense of newness around them. The mare, a large and powerful grey and who’s classic elegance was clear even to the most amatuer equestrian, strode through the warm up ring with her rather small rider upon her back. But they were holding it together, they seemed mostly on the same page and were doing well for their first competition. Maybe it was the clear competitiveness both carried, and the sheer bit of intimidation around them that could send anyone with a lack of confidence into a worried frenzy. Not that Eden herself wasn’t a bit anxious, she was. She was anxious that she would forget this mare wasn’t Junee, and that she actually was quite a bit more sensitive than Junee. Not in a bad way though, she just responded a bit quicker and more enthusiastically to smaller and simpler cues, and sometimes it led to the mare getting away from Eden.
As they were led to the ring to show she passed the rider ahead of them, a younger pair who had actually done very well, which made Eden’s stomach churn a bit. She needed to be precise. They entered the ring, saluted and as they started the test she had to remind herself that not only was this her first show on the mare, but also the mare was in a new place. She hadn’t stepped into the show ring in a while either. But as they started Eden could feel the mare and her well schooled training pulling through and meeting Eden halfway. Her powerful strides which a few years earlier may have tossed Eden around in the saddle now stretched below them. She held each of her powerful shoulders up and a clear sign of unity and balance was naturally presented from both the rider and the mare. Even if this wasn’t Junee, and her beautiful warm brown coat, Eden was still pretty damn impressed. The qualified strides she took, that Eden had spent many days studying to find the right music and tempo for their ride, matched perfectly with the music. Beat for beat, the mare moved forward with grace and ease which eventually led them to the center line. They halted, saluted, and after a moment Eden smiled and dropped the reins of the mare, leaning forward to stroke her large neck and whisper a few soft words of praise before she gathered the reins and walked from the arena with a smile on Eden’s features and a bright look in Vega’s eyes. It wasn't until they left the outlined dressage ring when she allowed the mare to walk on a loose ring, her coat glimmering lightly with sweat and her shoulders moving forward with the strong muscles rippling under them. She always had been a large and thickly built horse, one that was solid but still needed to be looked after. If it wasn’t for her registry with the Australian Warmblood group she might even think she had some draft influence in her blood, but from what Eden could understand she didn’t. She was just a very very large mare. Much larger than her Junee, who at one point Eden even though was a bit larger for her.
As Eden left the arena she was greeted by Lincoln and Penny, who decided to take the weekend to see what Eden’s first show with Vega was like. Of course they were nothing short of impressed, smiles present on their faces as they approached Eden and the grey mare and held her as Eden slid off the horse’s back.
“That was really a nice solid test, especially for your first show together.” Lincoln spoke, and Penny nodded along in agreement.
“Regardless of your score you did well, and Vega of course. She definitely has lots of talent to go around,” Penny came over and stroked the mare’s neck giving Eden a soft smile. Eden returned it with her own happy smile.
“I agree, maybe once you get more training put onto cressie you can take Vega for a spin, you too lincoln.” Her eyes looked between them as she went to the mare’s head and gathered the reins from Lincoln who took a step back.
“Did you video?” Eden asked, her eyes glancing between the two.
“We had the professional do it, he will send it to you in an email later.” Penny quickly replied.
“Fair enough… It definitely feels odd.. Riding her. And not Junee. Me and Junee competed here before and I keep looking at Vega and realizing she isn’t my bay..” she laughed a bit, though it was clear she was struggling a bit with the fact that she wasn’t showing Junee as regularly anymore. It wasn’t a bad thing but she still missed the mare. She missed going to shows where she was recognized by her mount, the kind eyed bay mare who was always happy to get the attention and had all the patience in the world when it came to her audience and fans. She was at home in Kinavara though, taking a well deserved break and a few months to focus more on training and helping teach other riders the precise ropes of dressage. She would hopefully bring the mare back soon enough though, at the right show and opportunity.
“I can imagine, it feels weird not showing Paris but now instead riding Cressie or Adelaide.” Penny nodded, and looked to Lincoln who was also nodding in agreement. He didn’t say anything but they both knew he was learning the difference between Kalum and his new Obertaurer stallion named Brownie. Training both horses to their own personalities was a struggle, but was also worth it in the end as they all had agreed and helped him understand.
“Yeah.. would you mind making sure she has water near her stall when we get back? And that it isn't too cold? I am not asking for this beefcake to colic..” she smiled as she stopped and started to go to untighten the girth. Penny and Lincoln nodded before walking off, and as they did two others approached without Eden noticing.
