Description it is an EXTREMELY HUGE file (and I actually resized it to half it's original size)
Please excuse any minor misspellings (just don't be THAT person!)

Anyway I often get people asking me how it is I draw. And while I have put up a few examples, I recently thought to do a more detailed one. And what better timing as recently one of my watchers asked me and I recommended GIMP to her this morning.

So here is a VERY SIMPLE portrait drawing tutorial. All of it was done on GIMP and completely by mouse (which is how ALL of my drawings since April 2010) have been drawn.

ENJOY! and I hope it helps!

Just one layer? Ö_Ö
It was confusing enough to learn that you work with GIMP and touchpad but except from lineless paintings, I couldn't work digitally with just one layer. I was completely annoyed when I saved wrong right before my laptop crashed again and I had to finish the shading one a one layer drawing ^^'

I don't use as many as others persons do, but I have to use layers, at least for the "cleaner" drawings with real outlines etc. Otherwise it's be just messy... I need at least two layers, one for the outlines and one below that for the colouring... It makes stuff easier xD
But I usually end up with something between 5 and 20 layers, mostly for the colouring ^^'

i've recently started using a few layers for coloring, but in general I don't like them. for me the simpler I can make a drawing the better lol I admit to being lazy that way XP

Well... Obviously, I really like traditional arts and have fun with pencil drawings and and water colours and there are occasions when I draw digitally in a similiar way than I would traditionally (mostly realistic style) and stay with really few - sometimes just one too - layers... But with those anime drawings, I'm lazy. The layers make changes and shading easier and I have to pay almost no attention to keeping the lines clean ^^'
It's really impressive how clean your drawings are though! I would be completely frustrated when I had to work since I usually prefer SAI and my Bamboo tablet. SAI and touchpad is okay, similiar to GIMP with tablet too... But not GIMP and touchpad and definitely not without layers^^

lol see I use solid colors and color select everything so it makes keeping the lines clean a non-issue. I never even touch the black lines after they've been drawn.

You did this with a mouse? *Le facepalm*
Well, I don't use a mouse or a tablet. I don't use a PC I just have a labtop.
Although I could use a wireless mouse... *Le double facepalm*

actually when I did this I used a touchpad on my laptop, but since my laptop died I've been using my brother's computer and use a mouse. they're both pretty much the same for me, it's just a matter of getting used to one over the other.

You used a touchpad... Time to punish myself for not getting used to it yet... That should do it

I have a tip: when colouring a lineart, use the ink tool to colour it.
it works better than it looks.

Well you are awesome then (of course you are always awesome). I can't even draw in Paint, much less anything more fancy.

SerenEvy In reply to VixenTFox [2011-06-04 02:06:28 +0000 UTC]

actually GIMP is a lot easier to draw with than Paint.

Really? Looks a lot more complicated to me. But speaking of which. I did draw something I'd be interested in sharing with you, if you have YIM/MSN/AIM.

SerenEvy In reply to VixenTFox [2011-06-05 02:06:53 +0000 UTC]

yeah it does look more complicated but it's not. the program itself is a little more complicated but once you understand it the drawing itself it made easier.

yes I do. Sorceress2000@yahoo.com
