Description Ladies and gentlemen, I give you DuckJack (Wheeljack).  To whoever took this picture, let me know who you are and I will be more than happy to give you full credit.  I couldn't exactly take a picture of myself while in rig so I had to borrow.

*edit* feel free to ignore the bathroom sign in the background.  There is a picture taken later that gives a really funny story to this

***MEGA EMBARRASSED EDIT!!!!!***   I am feeling like a total dirtbag for not doing this earlier.  I forgot to give credit where it was most certainly due!  The design of this awesomesauce came from none other than the infamous :RazzieMbessai :  BOW BEFORE THE MULLET!!!

It was great seeing this in person. Still startled me when you had that fall on Saturday though...hopefully I can build a Tailgate that will survive more than a day for next Botcon.

Scary as the fall was, I still think it was kinda funny how I landed doing a push-up Military had nothin to do with it, just didnt want to damage Wheeljack further!  My next BotCon rig will be much better seeing as how I won't have to wait till the hotel room to assemble him for travel reasons

TaintedTamer In reply to SergeantDuck [2014-07-07 23:37:32 +0000 UTC]

You caught yourself REALLY well considering everything, it was still scary to see it happen though. Glad he wasn't damaged any further - I notice the duct-tape on his right leg Sunday, though the suit still looked fantastic.
That does sound like a better deal, I learned that having the chest in one full piece is NOT a good idea for traveling. Are you going to make a brand new suit for next Botcon?

SergeantDuck In reply to TaintedTamer [2014-07-08 00:44:29 +0000 UTC]

yes, new rig, have 2 in the works but not sure if I will be able to finish them both in time.  At the very least I will have the one completed that will be part of a group.

Wow, that will be impressive. I asked you at the convention, but kind of mixed of info from different cosplayers - may I ask again what your Wheeljack rig is comprised of?

Mostly foam, some bondo/resin/fiberglass, PVC piping, and a whooooole lotta hot glue.

Like block foam? I used a bit of craft foam and rather like the material, just think I need more practice with it. Tailgate had a whole ton of hot glue, but apparently not enough since the shoulders popped loose. I know Metroplex was mostly cardboard and craft foam, he looked really good too.

Block foam?  What is block foam?  I used the tile stuff like what you'd see on the floor of a gym or work center.  I also use a lot of craft foam from 2mm-6mm

TaintedTamer In reply to SergeantDuck [2014-07-09 00:07:39 +0000 UTC]

Oh, that makes way more sense. Block foam is horrible, but I've heard people use it... I need more practice with craft foam. The pieces I get are itty bitty tiny since all I really have is a wal-mart, but a hobby lobby just opened and I have a better idea of what to do for my next suit.

SergeantDuck In reply to TaintedTamer [2014-08-07 08:27:56 +0000 UTC]

Actually, for the tile foam I use, KMart!  Go to their fitness area (or in their tool/do it yourself house repair sections, dont ask why they have it in two locations in the store) and they usually have a pack of about 6 of these big ass foam tiles.  One side of the tile will have some sorta pattern but the other side should be smooth.  Pretty cheap  But if ya have to, WalMart should have them too, just think the pack comes with less and might be a "touch" more expensive.

Are those the ones that are basically giant puzzle pieces that kind of fit together? Now I'm getting all sorts of ideas for the next Tailgate I create, haha. XD

SergeantDuck In reply to TaintedTamer [2014-08-07 18:10:06 +0000 UTC]

Yup, thats them.  Just make sure you use a sharp blade like an xacto to cut or you won't get smooth edges.

Very cool. I'll definitely keep that in mind for the next Tailgate, probably not as light as the cardboard, but a hell of a lot sturdier I imagine. Though with Tailgate's curved chest might make for something interesting.

SergeantDuck In reply to TaintedTamer [2014-08-08 12:31:47 +0000 UTC]

Curves can be a bit "tricky" at times with foam BUT do not fear!  If you have a heat gun (or you can use a hair dryer as a last resort) you aim it at the foam and you can "soften" it.  Once that occurs you bend the foam to whatever curve you want.  HOWEVER!  If you want to paint the foam instead of covering it with vinyl or fabric be careful with the heat gun.  It can leave "wrinkle/stretch" marks on the foam so make sure you only use the heat gun on the side of the foam you don't want exposed.  Also, if you do decide to go with the paint route, the paint can crack/peel around areas that are flexed or curved.  You will want to seal the foam first with 1/2 white glue and water or plastidip before you paint and the more layers you use the better your chances of at least reducing the crack/peel a little.  I don't think you can avoid it completely, but it helps.  Here's some links that can help:

Holy crap, so much awesome information! I have all of those pages saved forever, the work people can do with foam just...blows my mind. Thank you for all the tips and help! Hopefully I can roll out to Botcon in a new, better than ever Tailgate next year.

One more pestering question - so did you do the fabric over Wheeljack? What material is best to use on the foam if you decide against painting?

SergeantDuck In reply to TaintedTamer [2014-08-09 17:17:05 +0000 UTC]

4 way stretch vinyl is what I used but honestly, you can use whatever kind of fabric you want (though stretchy kind fits over shapes better)

I could see vinyl being a bit of a pain, but it would definitely give you the...shiny...ness. Thank you for answering all my questions.

OMG.........! Can I just say how amazing you look as Wheeljack here? All the hard work and effort you put into making this has really paid off and the end result? I am gobsmacked O.o...... You have really inspired me to continue my cosplay as him next year here in London. Kudos to you for such an amazing turnout, love!

Long may you continue doing this!

awww, thank you!  Make sure you make a worklog for your rig.  You'd be surprised how much you learn from it.  It also helps other people learn which leads to MORE cosplayers!  And Primus knows we need more Transformers cosplayers!
