Description
Morning. The sun finally shined through, gracing the humble little inn room with a tint of gold and as a call for a new day. The covers of one particular bed were a mess on the floor, crumpled and thrown. Only a fifth of them now really still covered the young man, who lied curled up with eyes open and lifeless. With reluctance, he glanced over his shoulder at the window, and his eyes squinted at the light pouring in. With a groan, he buried his head under his arms, trying to hide from it. For a few more minutes he stayed that way, thoughts clouding into his mind and hoping nobody would notice his laziness quite so soon.
"Sir Samu, I've made you breakfast. I do hope you like eggs. It's the most our humble inn could do, to thank you for all you've done."
Seto's chest tightened and his fingers dug into his arms. Rise and shine goody-two-shoes, we know you'll save us all.
As the tray was set on the end table next to him, he restrained himself from moaning, and instead let out an insincere, "Thanks." Sitting up he looked at the rather unimpressive plate, two sunny side up eggs and a glass of orange juice. Well, he did somewhat lie about him 'donating' all his money to people which is why he had nothing to pay them with, so the least he could do was take advantage of it. He picked up the fork provided and began to dig in.
"Oh and Sir Samu?" the old innkeeper added, as she turned to leave. "There's a girl outside who wishes to see you and uh... a talking cat." The fork was dropped.
"What!? Tell them to get..." he stopped looking at the grandma's pudgy face, ever so trusting of him. He let out a moan, and with a steel tongue said, "Get... get in here."
The innkeeper nodded with a ginger smile, and headed out of the room. Seto sighed, and with no more supervision played with eggs, stabbing them, and smearing the yolk all around the plate. If only, if only.
"Seto..." that inevitable voice finally came.
"Yo, jerkwad," came her partner.
"Stalking me all the way to the inn? After I gave you your artifact back? Tch," Seto said, pulling up one of the shredded eggs on his fork, "Please tell me you have a hobby other attacking me."
"Hey! That's not what we're here for, idiot, but if you really want..." Luther said, claws snapping out.
"Luther..." Tsubaki scolded, and stepped in front of him to Seto, "We want to know what happened last night."
"Last night, huh? Heh, like you weren't there when the killjoy was explaining ever thing," Seto said, the egg dropping from his fork.
"We meant why you were picking fights," Tsubaki said sternly. Luther jumped onto the bed right next to Seto, a powerful smirk and tail strung high on his face as he joined in on the attack.
"Yeah, we already knew you were conceited dirtbag of a thief, but we had no idea liked pissing people off as a hobby," Luther said, "Nor that you were such baby." With that, the fork slammed down, clattering on the yolk-stained plate. Seto was up on his feet. Naturally, most insults like this didn't bother him anymore, but coming from them, it was a whole different.
"I have more power now than you can ever imagine, fleabag," Seto said, his face colder than ever, "With one shout, I can send both you and your owner packing behind bars."
"Would you?" Tsubaki asked, unflinching, eyes hid behind her solid black bangs. Seto bit his tongue, staring at a face just as serious as his. Would he? Now that was a question. He gritted his teeth, but before long his decision had been made clear. He glided past to the door, pushing her out of the way as he went. He didn't dare look back at the two, or imagine their faces.
"You have no more reason to chase me Tsubaki, so let it go," he said. Unfortunately though, before he could take another step, the girl was right back out in front of him, blocking the door. Seto's eyes narrowed. "I said let it go."
"Well, if you're not going to tell us, at least let us join you!" Tsubaki said, feet planted.
"WHAT!?"
"WHAAAAAAT!? TSUBAKI! ARE YOU CRAZY!? We're not joining this punk!" Luther complained, jumping out in between them.
"I don't know what's going on, but something really bad is happening to Escantha. I can't let you go off and kill yourself in some stupid fight, when so many people are in danger," Tsubaki said. There was a moment of silence. As much as Seto looked for them, he could not find her eyes behind that black curtain. He could read her. Whether she was confident, or about to shake, and it bothered him. Luther had his eyes turned on him now too, with a glare he could only image under those black bangs. Seto clenched his fists, unwilling to recede.
"Out of my way, ruin girl," he snarled.
"If you really want out, why don't you do what you said you could?" the girl said, fingers digging harder into the frame than before, "You beat up a knight right? Surely, I won't be too much of a problem."
"Whoa, Tsubaki!" Luther said, looking back and forth between her and the abrasive redhead. Seto stepped forth, trying to show off his power as much as possible, but the girl did not flinch at all. The hero, was actually at loss of what to do. He looked at her, looked at the cat, looked for any other means of escaping, but he was stuck. "Out of the way," he tried again, but his uncertainty was starting to show. Tsubaki did not move. Finally, he sighed.
"Alright. Fine, you can join me," Seto said, and watched as she nodded and loosened her grip, "But on one condition..."
"What?" she asked. Seto passed her, and started down the hallway.
"I'll tell you, when we get going," he said.
--------------------------------------------------
On the way out of the town, the sky was rather ugly and grey. Dirt crunched under two pairs of boots, as the hero, the ruin guardian, the dog, and the cat headed out. It looked like it might snow soon, and all Seto could do was curse under his breath for forgetting to buy a coat. The white garbs he was forced in were so less warm than his old red coat. He rather missed it. Tsubaki was unperturbed though, or it seemed. It was still kind of hard to tell behind those black bangs.
"Man, Tsubaki. You're not really sure about this, are you?" Luther asked under his breath, as he walked beside her, "Yeah, he may have done some good things and saved me from that pit, but he's still Samu. Plus, he's like psycho now. What if he turns on you? I think you of all people would know you can't trust him."
"I know, but... I'm still concerned about him. Something's wrong," she said.
"Fine," Luther said through gritted teeth, "But if he upsets you, lays one finger on you..."
"I know, I know. Look, this isn't going to be like before, okay? I'm not following him because... I know it was a mistake. I'm just worried about him."
"Hey! Wait up!" a new voice suddenly called. The group stopped, and looked back over, to see somebody in the distance was running after them. As he got closer, details began showing. Brown coat, thick black boots, glasses on nose, and shiny bayonet swung around shoulder.
"Ansel..." Tsubaki whispered to herself, remembering the name.
"What's he does he want?" Luther asked. If he had a brows, one of them would be definitely raised.
"Oh great," Seto groaned. He watched as the young man caught up with them, and bent over, hands on knees, to catch his breath.
"Ah, phew... That was close."
"What do you want?" Seto said, heading forward to lurk over poor guy.
"Sir Samu, I..." Ansel looked to the side, noticing the girl and her cat from last night. So, the hero already picked up some company. Maybe his request wouldn't be as out there as he thought. He put on his most enticing smile, but kept his solemness as he stood up before the man in white. "Sir Samu, I demand to join you." Seto burst out laughing.
"HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! No."
"I'm afraid you don't have a choice. As a... Hah, as an 'upstanding citizen' as you called it, yes, I'm making it my duty to keep the hero on track. I don't know what's been going on, Sleepy Samu, but I have a good hunch you haven't been paying much attention to our missing prince as of late. Crime has run rampant, monsters are appearing by the dozen, and our nations are on the edge of warfare. We can't afford to have a loose cannon saving Ulrien, so that is why I'm going to stay with you until you clear up your act. Think of it as paying off your debt for destroying our town." As strong as Ansel pitched, and as puffed out as his chest was, his boots were trembling ever so slightly.
"I gave you every bag of cash I had on me," Seto said, "Why should I allow myself to be followed by some pathetic supervisor?"
"Because... Uh, because," Ansel swallowed. He really hadn't done a good job of thinking things through as of late. He licked his lips, and stared into the hero's eyes, then with a feigned smirk said, "Because I can keep the fangirls and stalkers off you." Oh, he would have hit himself. That was honestly the best he could come up with? To no surprise, the redhead was laughing harder than ever.
"You? First supervisor, and now you think you can play BODYGUARD to the HERO of Ulrien. HAHAHAHAHAHA!"
"Well, you wouldn't want to tarnish your reputation by threatening off innocent people would you?" Ansel said, trying to take up his reason as best as he could. That's when the cat joined in, taking a seat between Ansel and Seto.
"Oh come on, just let him join, jerkwad. You could use the social skills," he snickered. Seto stared at the blonde-haired man for a cold, hard moment then finally gave in.
"Okay, fine, but only on the same condition as you and Tsubaki."
"Yeah. And what was that by the way?" Luther asked, narrowing his eyes.
Seto grinned a most devilish grin. "I'll only you join me..." he said, as a great lion golem made its appearance behind him, "If you can keep up."

Nice job with this whole series. I feel bad for Seto, but I do wish he would find his own reason for continuing with life instead of being so sad panda. :C
Hopefully that comes soon.
