Description
This is the main character of a 3D-animated short that I'll be working on over the summer. I'm technically the creative director and a lighter and I'm working with a (wonderful) team of fellow students. It's crazy but by the end of August Snatch will hopefully be a finished product! It'll be a mad race but the first couple of classes have proven to be pretty fun, so hopefully I can survive this process and still love the story even afterward XDI've uploaded the Snatch animatic here for the curious: www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rHxRT…
It's changed a bit since the storyboard because it all had to be fit into 30 seconds. I think it reads properly but feel free to give feedback if you're confused on what happened.
I still need to come up with a name for the main character here :> I'm open to suggestions!
As a side note, the style I used for this was compared to the style used in Frozen and I inwardly cringed. I am intentionally using a more "Pixar-like" style but, generally speaking, every time my style is compared to something Disney, it's difficult to take as a compliment. It might be because I perceive the style itself as generic and I want my style to be more than that. BUT I am okay if this style looks more Disney because it makes the resolution of the short that much sweeter.
But does this really look like an Elsa/Anna clone?? :<

Aw her top left most headshot painting is adorable!
The youtube animantic also looks great, I can't wait to see this project finished!
And I know what you mean. A lot of people call my style "anime" and frankly I don't see it, nor do I want to be in that category. If it helps, I can recognize your style immediately

Thanks so much! x)
Me too, and it's coming along. I think we have around five weeks left :0 We're moving on to animation right now!
Yeah, it's tricky when entire styles are categorized essentially as anime and non-anime, or western. It's pretty limiting when things are grouped that way :U
It's your own style, definitely! :> I'm probably wasting energy worrying if my own style is too disney anyway. In the end it doesn't really matter if I'm happy with where it's going XD
I'm glad you can recognize my style too x) Yours is distinct as well!

Woohoo! Good luck!
Yeah it is pretty limiting for sure. I know we should take it as a compliment if our stuff looks like something people like, but something about it is always urking. You know what I mean. But you're right, as long as you are happy with the direction its going that is all that should matter (although artists are never truly happy with their work I guess haha)
I appreciate that c:

Oh this is for the claw machine one right? I remember it from a while back...
I shouldn't be allowed to name things... my terrapin is named 'turtle'.
I'd be miffed too if someone told me something I drew looked like something else. Honestly I think the only reason they might have thought that is because her hair is braided into two plaits. Your design kinda has more detail for the facial features like her nose and eyes? I think the new Disney style kinda simplifies some of it.
Er... the link isn't working, was it taken down or something? O.o
Just asking cuz I wanted to show it to a friend of mine who's studying animation, they'd probably be able to give better comments than I can. :'D
Anyway, I agree with Llaren, it's a solid design. I'd love to see the actual short! Good luck with the project! :>

Yeah! Production just started x)
Hahaha. I wasn't sure what a terrapin was. Is it a miniature turtle?? It's super cute :0
Just gotta smile and nod man. But yeah, this is why I don't think I would've survived going to art school. XD
I think you're right, the braid is definitely a similarity. Disney sometimes goes too far with simplification IMO :U Have you seen these manipulations of Disney characters?
sevenluck.tumblr.com/post/1205… There's more and they're so great :'D
I fixed the link! That's really weird. I might have just copy/pasted wrong.
And awesome!! Definitely let me know what you guys think. Shot 3 is going to change to make things clearer, I just have to make a new version of the animatic to include the revision.
If all goes well I'll have a finished short to share XD Thank you!!

I'm not very sure what it is either, it's like a cross between a turtle and a tortoise and typically don't grow very big. People can't seem to agree how to categorize them though. :'D
I wouldn't survive in an art school. Art theory eludes me and I have no patience for art history. >_>
Yea I think it's just to make the girls cuter though, round faces and big eyes is their 'safe' formula... I think. I don't know much about these things though. ^^"
Ooh I like the Aunt Cass, Elsa and Honey Lemon ones, I think the manipulations actually look better... especially for the older characters. :'D
Awesome! Mm from what I can tell there's been some parts cut out like the man walking past and the rabbit doll at the end... is it because it had to be within 30 seconds? The change in camera angles is nice too, where she looks into the machine to get the bear. :0
Aah good luck! Animation's tough but what you've got looks great so far! ><

Huh, I didn't even think there was a difference between turtles and tortoises XD except maybe tortoises are specifically land turtles.
For me it's not really that :0 It's the competitive nature of the school and potentially being surrounded with a ton of talented artists, which could actually be intimidating (at least at first). And then there are the horror stories of teachers and other students ripping on other students' art. So yeah XD If I had the opportunity none of that would stop me but the C O S T man
Yeahh it's all about appeal :0
I thought the manipulations looked p great too!! I'd love to see an animated feature in that sort of style. Slightly more realistic than what disney has going on now but definitely still appealing.
Yeah, those had to be cut out from the storyboard. I decided that in the end, the dad wasn't crucial to the story so he got trashed XD And thanks! My prof. suggested that change :>
Yayy thanks so much! Animation is definitely tough but I have a talented team working on it. I HAVE THE UTMOST CONFIDENCE lol

I only know because I argued about it with one of my friends so we went to google it. :0
Ah that's true... but it'd be the same in design schools too, I've had some of my stuff torn apart (literally) by tutors and my self esteem only dropped 120% after seeing the cohort displays but I think people are generally pretty nice after getting to know them... which is unavoidable given the amount of time we spend in school together. It's kinda sad though, I did consider going to this art school but it's not really taken seriously here. The mindset for most people here is that it's not 'useful' most people do it because they're grades can't get them into other courses... or at least, that's what I thought when I went to check it out. :/
Haha I'm not sure about animations but I've seen some gifs floating around. :'D
Oh I see. Yea it does look a lot better now. (I liked the rabbit ending though, it was creepy. Though the ending with 'snatch' lighting up at the end works too, more subtle but same effect. 8D)
Np! ;u;b That's great! Having good teammates can really make or break a project, but if you're with a good team it's a lot more fun.

Ugh that is awful :U it's called CONSTRUCTIVE criticism for a reason...
And the art blow-off class seems to be the mindset for schools where the main focus isn't art? That's a generalization but if the art department is weaker, lots of kids might be going in just to get an easy pass P:
Hopefully you'll be able to find somewhere that has a solid art program. There are schools out there that -don't- cost an arm and a leg, hopefully.
I liked that ending too! But after a few critiques I could see it as being too overt/not subtle enough so I ended up going with the ending I have now. The other ending also took more time when I tried it out in the animatic, so this one is also more speedy.
Word :U

Yea, there are official 'critique' sessions where tutors grade you on your schemes. Which is a hundred times scarier because your grades depend on it. :'D
Yeah, kind of... most of the people who are really serious about it try to go overseas to study art. I think.
Haha maybe one day if it's possible, but in the meantime I'm stuck with what I've got for 4 years... learning how to art from the internet. ;u;b
Oh so that's why. XD Well, it's a nifty solution. It's interesting to see how these things develop over time. :>

I like this character. She somehow has the right mix between cute and sassy : D
Regarding the art style; if you hadn't pointed it out I would've never thought of comparing it to something disney related.
To me it's clearly your own style.
About the naming; to me she looks like a Kiara. Or maybe a Tessa : >

It's good to know whatever I have going is distinguishable. Thanks x)
Yayy thanks for the naming suggestions! I'll definitely note those down, I like them!
