Description

Eudora was a little nervous. It was silly, she knew. Drinking sap wasn’t really that big of a deal. Lots of wyngrew she knew did so, and generally they only had one or two, and hung out and talked, and it was more of a social thing. It wasn’t going to mean she got exposed to a bunch of “rough types” like she’d been warned. She’d avoid anyone who seemed to be drinking heavily or looking shady and that should do it, right?

Maybe she should have brought Buck. They could have laughed together about it. But… aside from the funny feelings she didn’t quite understand lately about her friendship with Buck, Eudora wanted to do this herself. She needed to be- or at least pretend to be- more independent. The cottage felt more and more like home now, but her life still felt just a little surreal.

More importantly, she couldn’t just lean on Buck her whole life. Who wants their little sister hanging about all the time, no matter how close they are with her? I mean sure, Buck and his child would always be important to her, and she’d always be around for Elma no matter what, but someday, Buck was going to probably want to find some gro to be with and give Elma a proper mother… the thought gave her a funny twinge. She guessed it must be because Elma was so dear to her. But surely another mother figure would only be good for her? Elma would still love Eudora the same. She remembered the many helpers at the nook, knowing her relationship with the wyngling wouldn’t change. So why did she still feel funny?

No! This was a celebration, it wasn’t time to think of such things. So, to celebrate her new house and new life, she was going to get her first grown-up drink. All by herself. While the Rattle’s Rest still needed rebuilding, there was a small cafe that served up sap in the evenings.

She went up to the bar and offered a friendly smile. The barkeep returned it.

“You’re a new face, come here on my days off, do you?”

Eudora giggled. “My first time here, actually. I’ve only recently been old enough and I decided I wanted to give sap a try.” She glanced up at the chalkboard menu showing the drinks of the day.

Behind her, outside of her notice, a somewhat older wyngro turned slightly at the sound of the bubbly voice. Surreptitiously, he looked her up and down. Nice. Young, too, didn’t know what she was doing. Probably easy to get her good and silly. Maybe it would be good for a night’s entertainment to see her sappy? Might get a little snoot boop out of her by the end of the night, if he played his cards right. If nothing else, she might be prone to getting loud and letting her hair down once she had a few. Sounded fun.

“What’s good if you’re new to it? Do you have drinks that are sweet?” She was asking.

“Allow me, pretty lady,” Rick said from behind, all smiles as he reached over her and pointed to a drink on the list. “I think you may enjoy this as a first try, it’s sweet and not terribly strong. I have always thought it one of the better tasting mixed sap drinks.”

“Oh, thank you, how nice!” Eudora beamed at the stranger and turned back to the bar. “I will try that one, since he was so polite to suggest it.” She reached out to hand over her money, but Rick waved her hand away, paid for the drink, and then grabbed it with a wink, gesturing with his chin toward a table near the back. Intrigued, she followed him, sitting across from him and thanking him once again for being so kind as to buy her a drink.

“The pleasure’s all mine,” Rick replied. “It’s not every day I get to buy a beautiful lady her first taste of sap.” Lifting his own drink, he held it out. “To new experiences.”

Eudora clinked her glass against his with a giggle. “New experiences,” she echoed, sipping the drink as she gazed over the rim of her glass at him, the second giggle she’d held back still bright in her eyes.

Oh, she was going to be fun indeed. Rick immediately turned the charm up to eleven.

“So tell me, are you new to town?”

Eudora was still rolling the unfamiliar sensation around her tongue, so she swallowed the mouthful hastily. Very different! She didn’t quite know what to make of it. He asked a question right? “Oh um, no, I uh, I grew up at the Nook.”

“Did you now? I did as well. I don’t remember seeing you there.” He looked at her, brow arched. “I know I’d have recognized you, there’s no way you grew up looking this nice if you weren’t a cute youngster too.”

Eudora blushed deeply. Nobody had ever paid her such particular attention before. It reminded her a little of the stories she loved to read. Is this what people said to you when it was love at first sight? Maybe it was the sap, or maybe it was the approval behind his gaze, but Eudora felt just a bit giddy.

“I, well, I was always rather shy,” she admitted, her gaze down at the table as she felt suddenly self-conscious. “I kept to myself a lot.”

“Nothin’ wrong with that,” Rick said. “Plenty of folks there not worth it, am I right?”

Was he bullied too? She wondered. It seemed inappropriate to ask, so she simply nodded, and took another sip...
