Description
This is sort of a 3d modeling self study concerning detailed texturing. The study aims to focus more on the textures rather than the mesh to create a very realistic render. The model shown here is a piece of an unfinished leg armor of a Terran Marine from StarCraft 2.Related content

This reminds me of Megaman X's New Armor from Mega Man X: Command Mission.

bloody awsome, allways loved the bulkiness of the terran armor. great work!

Can you apply normal mapping? Seems like too many polygons to be used on most PCs, let alone consoles.

I could. But I'm not planning on using this in a console or PC game. This is for pre-rendered cinematics where polygon count isn't of an issue

As noted 'above' the blood is one thing that is lacking in your texturing. The simplest way to fix it would to make some changes to the specular channel so that it is no longer continuous with the base blue metal, and add a slight raise with a bump map so it is not flush with it.
Instead of a wiremesh render, it might've been a better option to do a 'hidden line' screen capture.
Other than that, very nice work. Very effective breakdown.

Thanks. And yeah, the appearance of the blood is one thing I neglected in this work. Thanks to both of you for noticing.

Cool work in any case. Do you think you can possibly show the uv layouts of this sometime? I'd like to see how you actually went about getting such a nice resolution to the textures.

Sure. I'll show it to you when I can allocate some time

Very nice renders and a great breakdown. Texturing is generally my weak point, so these kind of references are wonderful.
How did you get the transparent wiremesh render? That looks awesome.

It looks great. But I can see some smoothing errors. You might want to fix those.

That's a pretty awesome job you've done on this. Very impressive indeed.. great skills, knowledge and time have been put into this baby!
love the why you set this up.. the only thing I find a little off is the blood seems to under a clear coat on the paint job instead of sitting on top maybe due in part to the spec hi lighting on it I think?..It's a minor detail and can only be seen on the close up.
Is there any way you can move this alpha to the top or mask/gradient ramp out the spec hi light on it? plus adding a bit of color variation to the blood would also help make it more believable, a little darker purple-lish reds and red browns would give it more of a look of blood that's been on it for more then a few seconds, thinning out the opacity of parts of the smear would also help. Again it's minor details, but you've done such a awesome job on this, little extra touches like this would push it up another notch.
Man I wish I had your skills in 3D ! Awesome job guy!

holy crap, under 10k poly count and its cinematic quality.. is this c4d? id love to see a tutorial on texturing, i always find it the hardest part

hey theres some really good c4d tutorials here [link] most of them for free and theres also a dvd on texturing but you might be able to learn enough without buying it.

How long did it take you to make textures/shaders/etc ?
Its a impressive texturing work ^^

Well I kinda model each piece then texture it, then I model the next piece then texture that. So I can only guess on the total time it took me to texture this entire leg. But it took me about 15-30 minutes to texture each piece, including the process of UV unwrapping. The painted parts generally took longer.
