Time for something different from me. Or at least something I don't normally post on deviantART for whatever reason. A musk ox I painted at an animal portrait course I took over the weekend.I made two watercolour paintings of a musk ox, this is the second one. It's much bigger (size A3) and much more detailed than its pair. The title is in Finnish and means "strong". Here I wanted to focus more on bringing out the intensity and the immense power of this gorgeous animal with composition, the more detailed work and the contrasts. It was such a great painting exercise and I feel that I succeeded in what I tried to do and I'm happy with the results, too!

A lot of people think that just because it's an herbivore, it's some placid pack animal. An agitated musk ox in the wild will properly f#%k you up. Nice work with those silky/feathery brushstrokes on the fur.

Imo big herbivores are so much more intimidating and badass than the big beasts. The herbivores are alert 24/7 and are ready to stop you any moment. The sheer size an force is so respectable. The carnivores are mostly more chill.

Awh man, normally the more loose kind of painting would really be my jam (like your original) but you really did do such a great job on getting that power to really come through. Great job on both of them though. I keep on staring at all of the hair detail on this guy. Its so lovely.

The details of the fur look great, especially the more wispy strands! The subtle contrasts and variations in the fur's colors really helps bring this piece to life.
