Description “Ares however, almost broke at their time in the Moonprison. Many Areans needed to kill to survive, devouring souls or living from fresh meat and blood. Usually hunting for food in Caelian or Earthran territory. Suddenly they had only each other left."

-History of Zion, Ares confinement to the MoonPrison
-Introduction Flash

With the Caindreads being less then human, it was the High Demon who decided to use them, to keep the starving Arean families alive. Regardless of past loyalties to the Arean people, to their citizens and their cities, the Caindreads were shackled, forced into servitude, and slain.

So that Ares would live on.

The High Demon was both a martyr and a murderer. He did what was necessary to save the greater whole, by sacrificing the greater good. Because of his cruelty, Kels kind harbors only rage towards the entire Arean nation, and any who rise to defend it. Yet again, because of his kindness, Kel was able to transcend the fate of his kin, and experience the true beauty of manking through human form.

One act of retribution doesn't rectify past sins.
But it most certainly saved a life.

Signs and Symbols throughout the piece
-Spoilers ahead-
Seerus plans to purge the Arean nation by fire, the moon aflame represents this desire.

She skull set about Seerus's neck is indeed all that remains of the High Demon. Props to those who figured this out based on the horns structure alone.

The talons were drawn to fall like feathers, breaking into the earth like grand gravestones. A death of loyalty, love and innocence.

In past submissions, I have mentioned that Caindreads living to old age is a rarity. This makes the depiction of the elder Caindread in the caves particularly tragic as he and his son pass on.

All of Leera's rage towards humanity and Arean kind hinges from the moment depicted in frame 4. The stronger the will, the fuller the spirit, and Leera's mother was a fighter to the end. Her soul was scarified after a stringent display of defiance on behalf of her daughters
wellbeing. Her soul was harvested shortly thereafter, causing Leera to fall into the ashen state she is in today.

The shattering moon represents Ares final release from the Moonprison, while the High Demon laments on all that he has done for Ares.

The High Demon is stationed high above Kel, for Kel always viewed the man on a pedestal.
To bad it was made from the bodies of his kin.

I considered setting Kel in a pool of blood, but settled for the stains of impure water to show ambiguity through impurity. Kel served the very man responsible for the genocide of most his kind, and is now lost to the filth of his confusion.

-Questions are welcomed as always~

there are definitely some story bits somewhere for me to read yes?

because all of these heavy motions cemented in sordid history cannot be expressed in full by images alone. Not when an event such as this has transpired and affected so many and so much.

I can feel the hot, seething hatred on the hot air of his every breath as his words hiss through his bared teeth.

this is so cool, really reminds me of my entire driving force behind making a vampire, the idea of how many areans had to kill each other and the problems (mainly death) that it caused

Oh my GOOOOOOD I look into the SoC message stack and am smacked in the face with a flood of heartbreaking Kel history

It may have been typical forgetfulness on my part but I had nooo idea Kel's and the Caindreads' histories were so gorgeously dark. I think a lot of the distressed side of Ares, in both what happened to them and how they dealt with it, has been lost over the course of the chapters, and members grasp coming from the moon prison as a dark history but not quite HOW terrible it was for most. The High Demon is beautiful in how tragic he is, that he seems to have been a good person but faced with the kind of terrible world that Ares became, he became terrible as well -- and it seems like he knew it too, between the way you phrase things about him and the tears in his skull here. Martyr and murderer just gave me shivers. You brought back full force the ugly history fuels much of Ares and just wow -collapses under inability to express everything I want to- 8'D

And now I have school so -opens Seerus and High Demon's app tabs to read and sob over later-

You always leave such touching and thoughtful comments and I feel like I just ramble stuff that's already been said xD But this image and Kel's expression in the mission are so heartbreaking and made me realize Kel's a lot more damaged than I thought he was. I can't wait to see more of his past and future.

Sol, wow, just wow. By now you're probably tired of hearing me go on about how much I love your artwork, but again I can't help but feel the goose bumps run up my arm when I see and this. I wanted to write a comment on that collaboration you and Noko, but I feel I would be overdoing it. But really, that was amazing. Both of you did such a great job, I can’t even. Now, let me move on to the second thing I really wanted to point out, your writing and storytelling has gotten to point where it is deliciously dark,  the visuals show such raw emotions they literally snapped me out of my sleepy daze and inspired me to write you a overly cheesy, horrible written comment without my glasses. Weh ish engish---

I wish i had stuck around A bit longer, if only to truly find out more about Kel's story It's gotten so deep, dark, beautiful- and I can't help but feel conflicted over the fate of the High demon. Which side is right? Were both wrong? Is this all....wrong?...all this pain and suffering at the hands of domination and hatred? I suppose its less about what was right and wrong and more about what made sense at the time....Even so, It hurts all the same. I'm still so frustrated over not having come to understand Kel to the fullest, and now I'll spend the rest of my days wondering how it could have been different;;; On another note, Sol this is beautiful. Gorgeous. Its emotion in art like this that makes me want to come back. Amazing job~~~~
