Alright, here we go, it's finally done. I've been working on this one for ages, so I hope it shows. So, what's to say here, I'm not that happy with the background, but since it's my first one, maybe I'll get better at this stuff sometime. The pose isn't anything spectacular either, but apart from that, a lot of work went into the character in order to get everything just right, and I think it worked out rather well.
Sketch and line art can be found here .
As always, critique is very welcome, so feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments.

Hey, thanks again!
Well, I guess it just boils down to perseverance in this case. It took a very long time, I just kept going at it and refining it until I absolutely liked it (the Yoshi, that is, I'm still not 100% happy with the background).

Hehe, well, it was a bit of a mess, but it worked out eventually. GIMP very badly needs an interface overhaul (I know they're working on it but it'll take some time).

woah, that is some smooooth line art and shading. I don't think I'd have the patience for that x3 Looks nearly like official art!
My only critique would be this- while the background is pretty well done, it kind of clashes with the stylization you've got goin on for Yoshi. Maybe something more cartoon like and less realistic would work better? I'm no expert at backgrounds by any means, so it's just a suggestion.

Being that I know a lot about beaches, mostly because I live nearly alongside one, I can say that I can see a small window of opportunity for improvement in the ocean line. First, for the sake of realism, a decreasing slope is generally present. This is mostly in part due to erosion. The best part about this is it lets you get an edge on the landscape as you figure in the shading for it. This is where the difficult part starts with the ocean line. You have to take tide into consideration. Timing is essential, depending on the time in which the beach is figured in, the shading will be completely altered based on water saturation.
Additionally, sand never loves to stay straight for anybody, it is always popping up in little dunes as the wind tosses it around the beach. if you made the texture a little more grainy it would make an already outstanding picture magnificent. Also, sand displaces upon the manipulation of weight being put on it, mostly because it is so small, it acts like a liquid substance a lot of times. This is sometimes why wet sand is considered non-newtonian. Figure in a little sand being uprooted by the Yoshi's presence on the beach, in fact, maybe even put some footprints in there to help the picture gleam a little more.
Those clouds should probably be a bit higher, but it works the way you have it pictured anyhow, because it could be left up to the interpretation of being the bend of eyesight that causes the illusion of the clouds being near the ocean itself. In a way, this made the picture just that little bit better.
Based on the coloration of the water, I can assume this is in a tropical location(the water lacks nutrients giving it that clear distinct blue color in the daylight). However, this is where the picture really shines because it designates a location for the person watching to specify for the flora, such as palm trees. Thus, you used the correct plants in cooperation for the color of the ocean. You may not have realized it, but that is a major flaw in most beach scenes. This one lacks that, which especially pleases me.
Then of course, another thing most people ignore, is the direction of the wind. Temperature differences between the water and the air above are what cause the winds to be so much more noticeable near a beach. Water cools more slowly, whereas the air does not. Thus, in the daytime, the air is warmer than the water, which causes the wind to flow out to the sea. During the night though, the exact opposite is true, causing the wind to flow the opposite direction, inland. The plants seem to demonstrate clear evidence of being manipulated by wind in the correct direction. Score 2 for being a great picture.
The transition from sand to grass is excellently designed. Most people depict it very gradual, when it is in fact, just as you pictured it here, one second it is grass, the next it is sand.
Last but not least, the thing that makes this picture so great is the shading. No really, the shading of this environment is absolutely spectacular. It may just be one of the best shading jobs I have ever seen. The way that the light hits off the trunks of those trees, and glances off the very edge of the ocean, it almost feels like a scene you have seen in some photograph depicting a scenic location in a travel brochure. So in a very large way, I nearly completely disagree with you, the background is a central part of this piece, it is great.
This certainly deserves more favorites than it has.

Whoa, what a comment! I really appreciate it when people put in so much effort into their critique, so thanks a lot. I'll just reply to each paragraph.
Yeah, I had a bit of a hard time trying to get the slope (actually the whole perspective of the beach) to look right, and I'm still not really satisfied with it. Part of the problem was that I drew the character before thinking about the background and ended up with a point of view for the Yoshi, which is way too high for a sensible perspective on a beach scene. So it looks a bit wrong in some places . About the tide, I didn't really take that into consideration, and I wouldn't know how to do that either...
The sand... I was almost done with the picture, when I realized that the sand was still just a solidly colored area, and I couldn't be bothered with putting a lot of work into it at that time, since I really just wanted to get it finished back then. But I'll remember what you said and take it into consideration when I draw sand the next time.
Yeah, they're supposed to look like they're really far away and therefore seem close to the ocean. When looking at it now though, it looks like they are painted on a giant cardboard wall a few hundred meters behind the Yoshi . Maybe it's just me, but I'll try and get that done better next time, too.
Yes, it is indeed supposed to depict a tropical island. I just did what seemed natural to me though. I don't live anywhere near tropical places, but the stereotyped-tropical-island image I have in my head includes this cyan-like ocean, almost white sand on the beach, palm trees and some other plants with giant leaves, so that one came easily. I'm glad to hear it was the right thing to do .
Uhh, I'll just be honest and say that it's probably coincidence. I didn't consciously think about the direction of the wind at all when drawing this .
Didn't know that either, guess I got lucky again.
Hehe, I played with a few lighting effects on the jungle side of the picture, so I'm very happy it payed off. I'm glad you like the background that much, gives me motivation to put even more effort into my next one.
Well, you just upped the number by one, thanks a bunch!
