Description
This was a commission for edelilah of her and her friend SA1B0T 's beautiful Minkin characters named Evening and Umbra. Evening is the sickle-horn and Umbra is the crystal-horn. Evening has the rare ability to control a starry mist, and so she is showing it to Umbra (much to her apparent delight).
I took on this commission because not only are Minkins gorgeous, but I wanted to do another high detail, full-scale piece. The last one I had completed was Quiet Strength, which was over a year ago. I really have taken a liking to this species and these characters. They are sparkly little deer creatures, but when I envisioned them in my head I kept thinking of a mix of calf/lamb/foal/fawn anatomy. I tried to incorporate those different animals' aspects into their build, while sticking true to the original design of the species. This picture took a very long time for me to get through due to a lot, and I mean a LOT, of meaningful life events that transpired after I had taken the commission on.
When I first accepted this commission about 5 months ago, Coonkun and I were just dating, I was still working at the exotic clinic, I was still living in Monroe with my parents, I was wondering if my snake was gravid at all, and I had no idea what my future held.
Now, Coony and I are engaged, I quit my stressful, time consuming job, we moved into a little house in Tacoma, Scully had 18 babies, we planned out 80% of the wedding, and we even have a little bundle of furry joy on the way! I'M PREGNANT!!!
JK we're getting a dog though.
In all seriousness, I have been extremely busy these past months, and through it all was this picture. I was determined to finish it though, and I had a lot of fun with this piece. I am eternally grateful for edelilah 's understanding throughout all of the delays. Usually an artist can anticipate a little life slowing them down every once in a while when it comes to their artwork, but I was entirely caught off guard by just how MUCH life decided to happen to me all at once! Anyway, I'm glad that I was finally able to finish it, and I hope ya'll enjoy this because I am taking a break from full scale pieces for a while!

THe coloration choices are superb!!! THe way you used a gradient on he body as well as in the sky makes the pinks and purples really pop. Your detial of the hair and mane is also fantastic, with the shading and highlighting making each strand visible and the direction of the hair is quite visible as well, bringing movement to your drawing. THe glitter on their faces is also brought out by the stars, and there isnt too little or too much. It also enhances their eyes which are realistically detailed as well. The orns looks like crystal, you catpured the light and facets really well, and I see no faults. The only thing that might be a little off- I'm not 100% sure it should be- is that the body of the pink horned one looks a tad too small compared to the blue one, not just in perspectie, about how it is farther away, but it looks a bit too small for the anatom to hold up the pink one's head. perhaps it is that the head is very furry, or this is the way the glitter creatues look, idk. There also could have been a little more shading, depending on the sky, especially since there is no moon and the sun is just coming up(or down?) the side closest to us would be darker, less the glitter creatures have luminescence, and the fact you wanted to show how toned they were.
LAstly, the lifted hoof has a different color shoe the ones on hte ground, and it is in fact darker, when, if anything, it should be lighter because it is not shaded by the grass and thorns but more exposed to the sunset/sunrise.
overall, this is exquisite, and depending on anatomy of the creatures, the lighting is a bit off.

Thank you very much for this critique! You are correct about the large head on Umbra. She has a lot of fluffyness around her face, ears, and neck, but I agree that I could have toned it down a little to make her head look smaller. She reminded me of a Papillon (fluffy eared dog breed) though and it was too fun to resist!
I imagine that these creatures do have a little luminescence of their own, since they are sparkly and magical after all, but you're right, the shadows would be much more dramatic for sure if this was a real photo, so I agree with that too.
Umbra's lifted hoof, however, is supposed to be darker than the others! She is a piebald animal so her left side looks entirely different from her right side. Thanks again for taking the time to write out your notes

Well, shit. Now I'mma just curl up and quit art. But no seriously, I love how you do fur, whether short or long. The colors blend so nicely into the fur and the little details. Dem eye lashes and glittery noses.

Omg, Shaddie!! I keep coming back to look at this, and every time, I find new 'favorite-things' about it. In conclusion: THIS WHOLE PICTURE IS MY FAVORITE THING. Everything from sparkles, fur texture, ears, subtle butt fuzz, the contours of the horns, the skin folds at the junctions of the legs... So much perfection!
And, congrats on all your happies!!!! *snugs*

It's beautiful! I love how you used the two Minkins colours for the background and still managed to detache them from it! They totally fit in the background without blending, great work!
