Description Yes, there will be much more to cover in my quest to tear the reboot era a new one, and give people an understanding as to why people like me found it so disappointing.
What better way to do that then to show Archie's top ten reasons to get excited for the reboot list from their Super Digest magazines.

Before I cover these, please don't get upset at what I cover here. If you enjoyed the reboot, more power to you.
But just don't be a brat about my opinion here, and keep in mind that I was actually excited for this reboot when it first occurred in 2013 and gave it chance. Only to be turned off by it as soon as late 2014.
So here's the rundown.

10. Zones that we have seen before, and the Zones that were new had no creativity behind them.

9. All the new characters that came off as complete rip offs of other characters (with a few exceptions)

8. all those new villains that had potential that was completely squandered

7. The fact that Ian Flynn lied to us when he said "I will say the old universe still counts. We didn't make 200+ issues for nothing."
(even though there were certain characters that actually remembered the stuff that caused the reboot)

6. Sally getting completely dumbed down. (along with the other Satam characters)

5. the fact that something as anticipated and simple as the Freedom Fighters reuniting was completely ruined by Amy getting retarded amounts of spotlight and unnecessary glorification. (or perhaps the more appropriate term is... Sue-ification)

4. this was the only thing they promised that actually happened.
Even though I feel Tracy Yardley's art style alone did a fine enough job at making them look more like game characters already.

3. All that stuff that was hyped up about this new craft, and yet it goes down without a fight.

2. The fact that the best artists were shoved aside just because they couldn't draw faces that could become memes.

1. The fact that Ian Flynn dragged out the shattered world crisis for two-in-a-half years straight.
I don't think I have seen something like this happen in a comic since Spider-Man's clone saga.

Update: as of typing this, part two has been posted here's the link.

Just working on art stuff though it's getting late.
I was checking my stuff here on and randomly saw this on my notifications. I thought I should say a few things since I have a couple projects related to this reboot universe. ^^

I don't see anything similar between Razor and Geoff whatsoever.

They both have a similar attitude and they both work independently for their own authorities.
The only real difference between the two for me is that Geoffrey had an actual backstory.

If you still don't get it, then I guess I cant convince you further.

I see here you're going, but sorry I don't see much similarity personality wise. Geoff just seems more no-nonsense compared to Razor and Razor doesn't even get along that well with the local authorities being a former pirate and all. Honestly, I think that shrimp character has more in common with Geoff personally.

Geoffrey St. John gets his own reboot in the due anytime soon self published by Ken Penders Lara-Su Chronicles.

And since Karl Bollers is editor of Valiant Comics (Quantum and Woody, X-O Manowar, Archer and Armstrong, others), why can't he reboot Mina Mongoose for Valiant on his own?

The reboot was doomed to fail from the start, especially considering how much control Sega now had over the comic, in which the heart and soul were sucked out completely to make it an advertisement for the games, and Sega was obviously intent on driving away the SatAM/Old Archie fandom in favor of bringing in fans of the games by downplaying and intentionally erasing the old continuity as much as possible.

It's like in 1985 when a new Coca-Cola formula was introduced, but it didn't strike fans and Coca-Cola returned the old formula as Coca-Cola Classic.

Agreed, but sadly, nothing's going to change back into the way it was, due to both the lawsuit and Sega now having more control over the franchise.

You know Sega commissioned the Freedom Fighters for Sonic Sat AM (produced by DIC, now part of Cookie Jar/DHX) and the comic books!

If that is true... then why aren't they in the games?

Sally, Bunnie, Rotor, plus Muttski (Ben Muttski) appeared in 2 bonus stages of the Sega Genesis game Sonic Spinball.

Mostly cameos though, but sadly, that's it, since Sega is intent on burying anything relating to SatAM and Archie Sonic. I think they're too embarrassed after the Ken Penders lawsuit.

Maybe Sega might change its mind and allow the Freedom Fighters with some other source...

actually, the only thing Sega had input on was number 7. Even then, the fact that some characters in the reboot recalled the super Genesis wave happening shows that things were not as strict as I once thought.

Everything else here was actually the call of Ian Flynn and the Archie Sonic staff.

There was no mandate saying that an adaptation of video game from 2008 had to be stretched out to 2 years.
The only time Sega forced Archie to adapt a video game during this time was the Genesis of a hero arc.

I still don't exactly trust Ian Flynn though, but I do know majority of the "changes" to the comic after the reboot were from Sega, who I think went overboard with the changes as a means of trying to bring in more fans of the games... which I feel failed miserably, especially when most of the readers of the comic prior to the reboot were driven away by the changes and mandates.

Is it Ian Flynn's fault?

Masterge77 In reply to dth1971 [2018-08-13 03:41:29 +0000 UTC]

I know there are some people who think it's Flynn's fault, but I'm not one of those people, because I know there were multiple different contributors, most of them being from Sega of Japan, namely Takeshi Iizuka, who is known for being rather strict with how Sonic is portrayed.

Well, I guess Ian Flynn doing IDW Sonic isn't going to backfire a la Archie with IDW Sonic #8 coming out this week...

How do you KNOW they were from Sega?

Sega owns the Freedom Fighters (even Sally Acorn), they were commissioned for Sat AM and the comic books.
