Description
A BS Mashup of two of my favorite european late 19th Century Revolvers; the M1882 Swiss Ordnance Revolver, and Webley Mk. IV.I could have sworn I uploaded this before, as this is sadly not a new drawing, but I did enjoy drawing it quite a bit at the time.
False history follows-
An advanced form of an obsolete design, the Model 1899 or 'Arsenal, Kingsport Revolver Model 1899' was one of the last Abadie System side-gate reloading revolvers produced in Amastol. Though an advanced design for a Side gate revolver, it was already outpaced by several foreign designs using swing-out or break-open cylinders. A rarity even in comparison to contemporary designs, it feeds and ejects from the left hand side. A more ergonomic approach than traditional right side feeding revolvers since the cylinder no longer had to be rotated by hand.
The Abadie system disconnects and locks the hammer in place allowing the trigger to be pulled to advance the cylinder one position during loading and unloading, decreasing loading time compared to other side-gate designs. A left hand ejector rod includes a spring loaded assist at the end of the ejection stroke. An outer sleeve protects the rod and spring from battlefield grime, and prevents binding of the ejector rod.
Rugged and Reliable it suffered from two major flaws; weight, and slow loading/unloading. Despite its failures, the Model 1899 was capable of handling the new cordite loaded cartridges of the era and thus was a far safer option for the Royal Highland Rangers and was adopted for military use in 1902 before being retired fifteen years later for a much more modern weapon.
