She upheld the tribal customs and laws with a religiosity and unswayed determination that impressed even her most devoted tribe-mates. She was known even to the rogues of the far-off dark marshes for her cold voice and strict rule, and to the particular enemies of the Tribe of Deep Shadows for her swift anger and fierce vengeance. Even so, at the heart of her icy demeanor and callousness was a fierce loyalty and passion for justice which served her tribe for as long as she lived. Deeper still was the tenderness and pain of a mother bereft of her children, a despair she held in darker shadows than any other of her many secrets.
