"Iselvella." Verrin choked on her name, then went on in a softer whisper: "Vell? Hey... Hey, can you hear me?"
She didn't move--didn't seem to even breathe as he picked his way through the rubble towards her. There was no groan of annoyance or flinch of surprise as he knelt next to her and touched her arm. Her skin was cold, almost icy.
"No, no, no... Vell... Come on. Come on, you're okay. You're going to be okay."
Verrin drew her into his arms, pulled her close to his chest, telling himself that it was the cold that was killing her. If he just warmed her enough, she would survive. The gash in her split armor did not matter. The blood running from her eyes did not matter. As long as he could push the warmth of his beating heart into hers, she would be okay.
His thoughts lashed back at him. Even he wasn't a good enough liar to believe it.

Oops, I made a sad again. Sorry about the sad. Will do better to draw fewer sads. (Probably not, lol).
