Can you do closed wings?

Shauntinasha In reply to coolkk892 [2013-04-04 03:01:26 +0000 UTC]

Oh boy! I dunno if I could find the time. My suggestion would be to make an ovular shape (the shape of the closed wings) and essentially just make an itty bitty oval pillow and then stitch the design of the feathers.

Painted them with Acrylic paint, although, since I've had them done for awhile, the white paint has sort of yellowed a bit, so I suggest some sort of like...glaze or something, I haven't tried it, but you might want to find something to do that with.

To get the perfectly identical shapes, I trace the shape of a pony's eye from the internet (there are tons of pony-eye-shapes resources) and cut out the, in this case, oval. Then I do a light layer of white paint on the paper eye shape and stick it, paint side down, where I want it on the face, either before or after sewing, doesn't really make a difference. Then, the paint lightly transfers to the fabric. With a paintbrush, paint on more white paint in the shape of the little "imprint" you just made. Wipe of the excess white paint, and paint the opposite side of the paper eye, apply to opposite side of face. Let dry and re-trace the oval eye shape, then, cut a smaller oval out of that to be the iris, or the coloured part, of the eye. Repeat the above steps but with the colour of the iris that you want it to be. And then, let it dry. For the pupils, I just sorta "eyeball it" (wink, wink, get it?) and paint on the black dot that is the center of the eye. Afterwards, you can add the big white, shining parts to make the eye have more shape to it, and ta-da, you're done

Something that I might suggest, if you don't really care about the cuddliness of your pony and it's just for display, you might be able to use "puffy paint" which is the kind of fabric paint you use that feels plasticy, you could use that for the same process but on thicker paper such as a flash card/cardstock. That way, the eye is for sure not going to be discoloured.

I'm sorry, I didnt read the whole comment, but maybe if you use the fabric paint in white, it wont yellow. The white paint I use on my plushies has never yellowed and I've had them for a while :3

Ah! Thanks for the suggestion. I'll probably just use white felt in the future, this project was more of a little mini thing jsut to see if I could do it with what I had

If I may ask, how'd you manage to sew in Dash's main and tail? Also, if I may ask, how did you size up that pony template for printing? Your looks rather larger than the template, and thusly much more appealing. XD And finally thanks for the wing tutorial, this would have been confusing otherwise. XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shauntinasha In reply to mastertortilla27 [2011-08-25 19:43:09 +0000 UTC]

For her tail I just sorta stuffed it all in there and machine sewed it on a reallly really wide thread or seam or whatever you wanna call it so it didnt get messed up, or alternatively you can tie some thread tightly around an end and stuff it in there and then hand stitch REALLY tightly aaround the tail.

The mane I've got explained here (I REALLY need to do a tutorial on it, I get so many questions ) [link]

Good luck! If you have anymore questions, I'll do my best to explain

Also, thanks, I felt like if nobody else would do it and I was gonna make Dash anyways, might as well share my secrets

mastertortilla27 In reply to Shauntinasha [2011-08-30 01:01:30 +0000 UTC]

Hm, well all of that should be quite interesting to try and pull off. XD Well, I just ordered a sewing machine I'd wanted, so, if I may ask, how do you size up that one free template for pony plushes they have here on DA? I hear that the regular template is rather small, but I have no idea how to enlarge it for printing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shauntinasha In reply to mastertortilla27 [2011-08-30 01:38:05 +0000 UTC]

(I'm cheap and this is my method for pattern resizing):

For those of us without MEGA scanners/printers, I take regular 8.5 x 11 pieces of printer paper and zoom in to my desired size (View>Zoom>100% (or your preference))

For example. the pony I made, I just clicked "Full View" (Or Download) And took my paper and placed it over the screen and very lightly traced the shape of the pattern with a felt tip marker or mechanical pencil. Anything works, really, just don't press hard on the screen, of course x)

A good size for this pattern when doing the entire thing by machine would be probably 200% because then you have room for mucho seam allowance, which is important since the pattern has all these curves

But for hand sewing, 150% is fine for me. Of course, if you want a HUGEEEE pony, zoom in more

(so much talking for so little information, I apologize. x) )

Ok, terribly sorry for having not responded to this for an entire month. I kept it up so I could keep a place marker for when I could finally get everything ready, and now I've finally got those template pieces cut out. ^^ Got a bit of practice material, my sewing machine came in and is set up, etc. ^^

omggg. So cuddly looking! What kind of fabric is that? looks satiny. x) I like how you made the tail, too Looking good! However, future tip (just personal preference) I painted the eyes/cutie marks prior to sewing the pieces together so I could make sure they were symmetrical. Might just be me. But looks good so far!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mastertortilla27 In reply to Shauntinasha [2011-10-06 21:44:48 +0000 UTC]

Well, since this is my first practice pony, meant to sort out as many technical errors as I'll encounter, it's just cotton. And oh yes, I quite enjoyed the tail, got to put a bit of embroidery on there. ^^ Ah, now see, i haven't actually gotten to the eyes and cutie mark, so if I may ask, how is it you usually do that process, both design and attaching?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shauntinasha In reply to mastertortilla27 [2011-10-06 22:40:41 +0000 UTC]

I use acrylic paints and hand paint them with both pieces facing eachother so I can mirror them with my eyes xD

Shauntinasha In reply to mastertortilla27 [2011-10-07 09:23:30 +0000 UTC]

I paint the eye pieces as well. x) Straight on the fabric. Acrylic paint is *supposed to* stain the fabric, though I have yet to wash anything I've painted on.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mastertortilla27 In reply to Shauntinasha [2011-10-07 19:22:01 +0000 UTC]

Ah good, I have a bit of acrylic I can play with. ^^ Oh, though if I may ask, what type of fabric do you use for the eyes? Oh, and.....hm......any suggestions on how I can get the eyes on now that the head is already sewn up? Didn't consider that until just now. XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shauntinasha In reply to mastertortilla27 [2011-10-07 20:05:16 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I don't think you understand, I literally paint straight onto the doll. There is no underlying fabric?

To do the eyes, I usually cut a small circle of paper, any paper, to the size and shape of the eye I want to paint. Then, I paint that circle with a coat of white paint (for the eyeball part) and i just stick it right on the fabric, paint side facing the fabric, this has to be done carefully to not smudge the paint. Then, carefully (again) remove the piece of paper (BEFORE THE PAINT DRIES. THIS IS IMPORTANT.) and the shape of eye you want should be there very lightly in white paint. Paint with more white on the fabric to brighten. Now take that same little piece of paper and flip it over, so the side you originally painted would be on your index finger or facing down or whatever. Now paint this side (should be the opposite of the original side, is what I'm getting at.) and do the same on the other side of the head. After the white dries, just use black paint and do small dabs at first and gradually grow larger depending on the size of the pupil you want, and where you want the pony to be looking. You can also do the coloured iris part before this, but it doesn't really make a difference. As long as you make sure all parts of the eye have been drying for at the very least, half an hour, before you add on another part of the eye. The last thing you should paint is the eyelashes/eyebrows. The mouth, I suggest painting on after you sew the pony anyways or it'll look funny. The nostrils, too.

The most positive thing I can say about this method, is you are sure to have equally shaped eyes. Also, after you let the white part dry, then you can get in assembly line mode. Paint the pupil on one, while it dries, paint the other, then the iris on the first and while it dries paint on the other. If you paint the face while you paint the cutie marks, this becomes the ultimate organized painting ever o3o That's my method!
