Zsinj's Empire had a successful first start in his campaign against the Galactic Republic, but then the Republic defenses stopped him in his advance. From here on even with Zsinj's new Raptor forces and TIE Raptor produced in masses had for the Warlord a hard time keeping up the pressure against the Republic. Zsinj's plan to get more Dathomiri and Separatist mercenaries to join his forces did not work out and with his flagship heavily damaged he was now on the defensive. This helped the Galactic Republic's advance under Vice Chancellor and Admiral Gail Ackbar against Zsinj's Empire. While Zsinj's Flagship was still badly damaged and barely escaped, Admiral Ackbar knew that it would continue to pose a huge threat if it could be repaired. This forced Gail Ackbar to call for Operation: Hunt for Zsinj. The Hunt for Zsinj itself was partly joined by the Mandalorian and Separatist forces that wanted to conquer Zsinj's Empire for themselves. The campaign named the Hunt for Zsinj. The feared warlord Zsinj himself was almost comical in his outward manner and appearance. Eventually, he took on the white uniform of a Grand Admiral a rank he never earned, which lent an element of incongruity to his appearance when combined with his corpulence and his handlebar moustache. In truth, Zsinj believed that misdirection was the greatest weapon at his command. Some considered him rough and piratical, others saw him as a psychopath, a few thought he was a buffoon. For strategic reasons, Zsinj did not want anyone to have an accurate picture of his personality, but his various personas were also necessary to keep the hyperintelligent admiral from becoming bored.As he was such a proficient technician, Zsinj's instructors at the Academy tried to guide him toward a career in support services. It was later believed he had received technical training in his youth, but as with many details of his early life the enemy intelligence was never able to verify this before his end. Zsinj had a fair degree of skill with general computer use, astrogation, and starship and starfighter engineering. His Raptors were outfitted with advanced vehicles and armor, and Zsinj personally designed their TIE/rpt starfighters. Zsinj was also an expert tactician. He invented a number of combat maneuvers which would later be taught in various military academies, such as the use of asteroids as a natural flak screen. He also had excellent organizational and management skills, as shown in his creation of an entirely new military force, the Raptors, and his ability to maintain a fleet composed of several disparate ex-Triumvirate Imperial elements. In personal combat, he was proficient with various blasters and vibroweapons. He almost always carried a blaster pistol, which he once used to obliterate his own office furnishings during a tantrum.
In addition to his military and technical skills, Zsinj also had the business acumen to maintain a hidden financial empire throughout New Republic and Imperial territory in addition to his own. Until Wraith Squadron assumed the mission of one of Zsinj's underlings, the New Republic was totally unaware of this. He was able to use the protection of his military forces as an incentive for planetary governors to provide him with secret assets, as he did on worlds like Null, Taris, Corsin and Draria. His secret business empire supported his publicly known military forces. He kept these financial holdings under numerous alias, including Cortle Steeze, Houghten Ween, and Oan Pakkerd. Zsinj even spoke several non-Basic languages, including Huttese, Mon Calamarian, and Rodese. Republic and Separatist intelligence later determined that Zsinj used nearly sixty different languages during his most secret orders and messages to code them personally.
Sadly for Zsinj the Republic was not his only enemy, but also the Mandalorians and the Separatist. Luckily Zsinj had allied his Empire with Greater Garos to secure both Imperial Remnants against the surrounding enemies and especially the Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders. This meant that Zsinj had to split up his forces on multiple fronts, giving Admiral and Vice Chancellor Ackbar enough time and opportunities to win the Hunt for Zsinj mostly for the Republic. The Hunt for Zsinj itself was a campaign during the last years of the Clone Wars, fought primarily between the Warlord Zsinj and the Galactic Republic as well as the Confederacy of Independent Systems as Zinj's enemies. The battles of the campaign, occurred entirely inside Republic space, either still controlled by the Republic, or conquered by the Mandalorians, Imperials or Separatists in the Colonies and the Outer Rim.
With Emperor Sidious and Tarkin killed, Grand Moff Zsinj was just one of many Imperial officers to go rogue. Zsinj knew that he couldn't make himself a target early in his career as a warlord, so he dispatched emissaries from the planets he controlled in order to convince the Galactic Republic to leave his territory alone so that he could arm his weak forces further and attack the Republic by surprise. His plan succeeded and Zsinj was able to consolidate his forces unhindered by Galactic Republic activities. Some of his early successes in building up his armada were the creation of the Raptors, building more shipyards, and creating secret weapon projects. With the help of the nearby Corporate Alliance and the Trade Federation. The building of Ugly ships, fighters and bombers and even the massive build up with the secret help of the nearby Separatist factions that hoped to weaken the Republic by doing so. This gave Zsinj the opportunity to create a small local power and empire in the Colonies and the Rim Territories.
Just prior to the end of Tarkin, Zsinj continued building up his forces from the worlds he held, while also absorbing the forces of other warlords such as Admiral Terrinald Screed and others. Zsinj managed to accumulate a significant amount of territory and finally felt it was time to strike. While not a massive invasion, Zsinj's forces had notable encounters with the Galactic Republic's forces and harassed Republic shipping during the ongoing Imperia Shadow War. Zsinj's Empire stretched along the Hydian Way, first from the Colonies to the Outer Rim, later at it's hight from the Inner Rim to the Outer Rim. The eccentric former Grand Moff affected the white uniform of a Grand Admiral and a handlebar moustache that led many in the New Republic to dismiss him as a buffoon. However, Zsinj possessed a powerful military built around the Super Star Destroyer Iron Fist and his elite units, the Raptors, had already halted the Galactic Republic incursions into his territory. Because of his recent victories, many Imperialists and Imperial Remnants looked up to Zsinj who was soon as famous as Thrawn and some believed he could beat the Republic and the Separatists.
But with the war between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems over, the Republic was finally in a position to focus on Zsinj and the rest of the Imperial Remnants. Under the command of Gail Ackbar, the Vice Chancellor and Admiral of the Republic Navy a large fleet led by the Mon Calamari was put together for the purpose of tracking down and eliminating the Warlord in his damaged flagship. The initial battles of the conflict mostly involved Zsinj's subordinate Admiral Ankno Tragsip, who Republic defense forces were able to eliminate with a number of brilliant acts of subterfuge. Still before Trigit's demise, he managed to capture Ploo and Serroco from the Republic, while failing to conquer nearby Cathar and Vulta. Zsinj even recruited mercenaries and space pirates and attacked the Republic flank at Lavisar. His plan to recruit Dathomiriand other organics from inside Separatist space meanwhile led to a split between the Confederacy and Zsinj. While some volunteers still joined his ranks from the Separatist regions, Zsinj's forces were mostly limited and depending on the worlds under his direct control.
Zsinj then used his own intelligence and forces to push from Serroco and Ploo onto Levian and Cares., completely surprising the Republic Navy with this move. But like his flank attack on Lavisar, the assault on Levian and Cares would end in a Republic Victory, mostly because the Trade Federation Trade Baron Taol Brairtu feared that the battle would not end in Zsinj's favor and ordered his Trade Federation forces to support the local Galactic Republic Navy and the Grand Army in their defense against Zsinj, a action that nearly got Count Dooku to order his assassination. The Trade Baron ironically managed to safe his life by supporting the Galactic Republic and the Jedi Orders even further by helping them with transports, supplies and even Trade Federation Battle Droids and Ships support Admiral Ackbars offensive. This however helped the restoration of the neutrality of the Trade Federation in the public opinion of the Galactic Republic and in exchange for their service the Trade Federation got exclusive trade rights in the parts of the Hydian Way that the Republic now reconquered with their help. This meant the Trade Federation now controlled most parts of the northern and southern Hydian Way in the galaxy and Count Dooku changes his mind about assassinating Trade Baron Taol Brairtu and instead praised his clever play of the Republic.
Zsinj's beginning recruitment of space pirates was revealed as part of a larger plan to start assaults deeper inside the Galactic Republic would his initial plan have continued to be a success. To make up for his one damaged and one lost flagship Super Star Destroyer, Zsinj assaulted Levian and while he was unable to take the world, Zsinj's commander Admiral Aqwar Trigit managed to steal the Republic's Super Star Destroyer Colonial Loyalist. This operation would give Zsinj a second Super Star Destroyer again. Zsinj, saw it as an opportunity to rob the Republic of a vessel they could use to challenge him. Thankfully for the Galactic Republic and the CIS, some of the Mercenaries and Pirates now hired by Zsinj were secretly Republic or Separatist spies. A Republic Spy cell managed to quickly destroy the Colonial Loyalist shortly after Zsinj's forces captured the ship, leaving many of his elite forces stranded and later become Republic prisoners.
Admiral and Vice Chancellors Ackbar's attack along the Hydian Way managed to Battle and take Nessem and Kidriff, because he started a feint attack on Jestan, taking the world. With a humiliating defeat at Draria came Zsinj's fiercest plan yet, as he planned a multi-pronged attack on Galactic Republic morale designed to cause dissension among the alien races within the Galactic Republic Navy to strengthen the opinion of the Empire on Aliens in the Galactic Republic Citizen Opinion.
Project Minefield was a special project under the direction of Warlord Zsinj. An outgrowth of Sidious similar Projects, Project Minefield was an effort to rapidly brainwash nonhuman individuals to carry out tasks for Zsinj. Using a set of fast-acting chemical treatments, Zsinj's agents programmed the kidnapped subject with a delusion of some type which they were made to believe could be corrected by carrying out their assigned task. The delusion and the assigned mission were linked to a programmed code phrase, which had a variable in it to allow the brainwashed agent's controller to assign a target. For example, when the brainwashed was ordered to kill a target, the controller told him "You are protected by Zsinj's great Empire." This caused the brainwashed to become enraged at the target, and killing him became his all-consuming goal. An intriguing side-effect was that subjects made the connection on a sub-conscious level, not a conscious level. When the brainwashed then was trying to kill the target, he was still yelling that his target "to protect Zsinj's Empire", even while trying to kill them. Strong-willed individuals were able to resist the programming to at least some degree. Some even realized that attacking his enemy from behind was dishonorable, and even though he couldn't completely shake off the brainwashing, he did leave himself open to attack. Other subjects were able to tell that something was wrong, even if they couldn't completely detect or resist the programming. Other downsides included the fact that the process left detectable markers in the subject's blood, and the effect rarely lasted for more than a year. It also only worked on mammalian species. The project's effect was not, as first believed, to assassinate key targets in the Galactic Republic to weaken Zsinj's enemies. It was instead to intensify division between Humans and non-humans, and split the Galactic Republic in two. Project Minefield was effectively terminated when Zsinj's Empire ended against the Republic and the Separatists.
Project Funeral was one of Warlord Zsinj's most ambitious plots. The brainwashing technique developed by the scientists on Project Minefield were applied to large numbers of nonhuman individuals throughout the Galactic Republic. The intention of the operation was to strain relations between Humans and nonhumans. By ordering nonhumans to attack various targets, Humans would be forced to fear those alien species. Non-Humans would then become resentful as they were treated with suspicion. For a while, the project was successful. Various attacks by Twi'leks, Neimoidians and others, including the attempted assassinations of Ackbar and Yularen caused the Galactic Republic to suspend these species from important positions. Four terrorist attacks and an attempt by a Gotal to kill Armand Isard cast suspicion on these species as well, while in secret Isard helped Zsinj and the rest of the Shadow Empire. As the Republic Intelligence conducted a brainstorming session to determine the key points of Zsinj's plan, and then forwarded this conclusions to the Republic Senate and the Supreme Chancellor double checked all species in highly risky position for any signs of brainwashing and prevented e ship crash as well as the explosion of a power plant. With the Republic, Trade Federation and Jedi Forces attacking Adin and later Corsin, the Galactic Republic managed to get their hands on the chemical markers of Project Minefield used for brainwashing and Project Minefield/ Project Funeral crews were soon captured all over the Republic, marking the end of both projects.
In the Battle of Adin Zsinj also attempted to lead the Republic's forces into a trap where his overwhelming fleet would annihilate his pursuers, a battle their forces tried to escape from, but still won the Battle thanks to the Jedi reinforcements. While the Republic's reevaluated their prey, Zsinj planned a trap for them on Corsin. Unorthodox tactics and massive Trade Federation support saved the Republic and the capture of Corsin gained further intelligence on Zsinj's plans. Zsinj appeared increasingly erratic and the warlord's cumulative losses, culminating in his defeat at the Second Battle of Camkin V and his raid deeper into Republic space, angered Loyalist Galactic Republic and Mandalore space to unite his forces with other Imperial Space. The Republic's Admirality quietly agreed to share tactical information with the Separatist as Zsinj's attacks became mire aggressive and his tactics destroyed great parts of the liberated worlds. The Separatist even leant some of their Ships to show their good will, while secretly still supporting Zsinj's Empire. Project Funeral continued successfully as the schism between humans and non-humans of the Galactic Republic grew bigger, however the collaboration of Republic, Neutral System and Confederate Intelligence managed to stop this plans.
During this turmoil the nearby Republic world Nouane declared it's final neutrality and openly joined the Council of Neutral Systems, creating a neutral space inside the Republic itself. Because Nouane had a strong navy and the Galactic Republic had political, economical and moral reasons to not directly attack and retake a former system that now was part of the Council of Neutral Systems, the Nouane neutrality became a galactic fact. In a attempt to force the system indirect to rejoin the already still very weakened Galactic Republic, trade with the Nouane system. This lead to Nouane to declare itself a Neutral System, but a Allied Region of the Galactic Republic. A Allied Region in the days of the Old Republic was a territory that remained semi-independent from the Old Republic. Many of these territories were ruled by warlords who joined the Republic instead of fighting it during the early days of Republic expansion. The rulers of these territories were given the title of Moff or Grand Moff, depending on the size and population of the Region, later inspiring the Triumvirate Empire's Titles.
The heavy losses during the campaign against Zsinj and the Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders led the Republic to ask for even more Trade Federation assistance with Ships and Battle Droids leading to secretly separatist Droids fighting alongside Imperials and Republicans on each side by now. Zsinj found himself in a horrible situation with Galactic Republic, Mandalorian and Separatist forces that now also attacked him, eating away at him from both fronts of his Empire. Based on these poor fortunes, Zsinj came up with an idea to abandon parts of his territory, and retreat to fight another day. Using false intel from a member of Republic's Intelligence that managed to infiltrate his forces, Zsinj was nearly trapped during the Serecco Uprising/ Rebellion against his Empire, but barely escaped. Sabotage by the Republic spy on board led him to be temporarily stranded in the Denova system. The Battle of Denova began with Republic's forces following the warlord. The short but vicious battle was turned into a cover for Zsinj to bring in the remains of his Super Star Destroyer, renamed the Second Iron Firs. He managed to release the ruins of the other Super Star Destroyed just as the Iron Fist made a final jump to Zsinj's capital world of G'wenee. The Republic by now was convinced that Zsinj was no more and slowed down their assault into Imperial Space to save their Troopers and Civilian lives.
With Zsinj on the run, the Separatist Forces (mostly the Trade Federation and the Corporate Alliance supported by the Retail Causus) attacked and conquered Cademimu, Polus, Er'Kit, Halmad, Bandomeer, Taris, Ord Sigatt, Pallaxides, Null, Vahaba, Selaggis and even the capital world of G'wenee. With the superior separatist numbers quickly overrunning him and his war-crimes done to the Galactic Republic, Zsinj had no place left to go and capitulated to the Separatists hoping that they would give him more mercy since they were on neutral trade grounds before their assault. Count Dooku accepted this turns and so Zsinj's Empire was split up by invading Republic and Separatist forces. The Galactic Republic sadly had no time to celebrate as the Mandalorian conquest continued to take Wayland, Boordii, Myrkr, Thustra, Aquaris and Jendorn while they still had to deal with Greater Garos in the northeast. Even worse, while Zsinj was defeated this greatly left the Mandalorians a free flank to return their focus to the Galactic Republi, even worse, some of Zsinj's former forces remained active, but lacked direction. Parts of his fleet was claimed by a number of independent warlords, most notably Treute Teradoc and the other greater Imperial Remnants.
Because the Galactic Republic had lost a significant portion of their military forces during the Clone Wars and now against the Imperial Remnants in the north of the Galaxy, Greater Garos stood a better chance then before. Many of the worlds liberated by the Galactic Republic were heavily damaged, destroyed and many of it's citizens killed during the fight or the guerrilla warfare afterwards. The Trade Federation and the InterGalactic Banking Clan were all too willing to help with the reconstruction of this worlds across the Hydian Way. Most Imperial splinter factions left in the northern galaxy meanwhile saw their dreams and hopes chattered with Zsinj's loss and began to back down from fighting the Galacitc Republic. Many of the remaining other warlords ever retreated into their pocket empires and isolated themselves, remaining neutral. Within a year from Zsinj's defeat, the galactic situation In the northern part of the galaxy was more stable, with the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems in nominal control of most of the known galaxy. While Armand Isard's plan for the Shadow Empire in the north was stopped and crushed, the stage even unknown to Isard was set for the upcoming next great conflict, and the reemergence of the last Grand Admiral and remaining leader of the Triumvirate Empire Mitth'raw'nuruodo (Thrawn) after he and the losely-allied Chiss Ascendancy had dealt with the Vagaari Empire as the Republic and the Confederacy focused on the Imperial Remnants and Zsinj.
