I'm not sure what to say that will help or not, but I'm sure others have that handled.

but I will say this, that is just a awesome idea. I love stories like this the idea that you can create any kind of monster is awesome.

I would so go for a game like that as well as make a oc for that.

This aslo makes me think about Drawn to life: the Next chapter, I loved that game cause you could draw anything as your hero, that where I made Spooka.

I would love to see you design your own tamer and byte. I'm even thinking, if I get enough, featuring fanmade bytes in my comic.

Hmm I figured the program to design the bytes would be similar to Spore but maybe they should be able to draw what they want their bytes to look like.

spud133 In reply to ShellYeah [2011-08-13 00:33:25 +0000 UTC]

goodness is I finish drawing the Bytes, now for the Tamer.

I like both ideas actually, like the spores thing could be there for those who can't draw that well, and then for those who can draw can chose between drawing their bytes out of use the Spore thing.

Can't wait to see the finished designs!
I think I just might make the Byte designing program allow both.

It's a good idea, and I would probably read the story, but you're definitely going to have to work hard to make the story less like digimon (especially if you're going to keep the name "moonmon" XD).

Also, I agree with the whole "be the best" thing. Unless you do something climactic and totally unexpected with it, that subject can really dull, really fast. As Cupil said before, being realistic would be the way to go.

-Warning, the following is me rambling about ideas-

I was skimming through the other comments, and thing I read one that mentioned customizing? I think it would be cool if it was like an MMO type thing, where you could customize your Byte. However, the cost of up grading should not just involve money, but a byte's strength as well.

For example: Moonmon doesn't look like he could handle giant armor gauntlets. They would probably be too heavy.

As for changing the Byte, themselves, maybe it could be a Spore type deal? Like, adding extra feathers, fur, wings ect.
Then the trainer/tamer would have think realistically on what they want. For example, if they wanted the Byte to fly, they'd have to either hollow the bones (Reduce durability), or lower the muscle level (Reduce strength), and, of course, add wings.
And then maybe there could be a way to save the different forms of said creature? IDK. Just some ideas.

-End Ramble-

As for the bytes... Are you going to give them feelings and such? Because, personally, I think that's more fun. XD;

I'd probably be interested in designing one. :>
However, I'd want to see how you'd go about the creation process first.

Wow, that was a lot. Hope there aren't too many typos.

That may have been rambling to you but you hit the nail on the head. Everything you said is what I plan on doing, except maybe the part about realistically designing the bytes, but I do picture the character customizing to resemble spore a lot. And the whole bytes game is gonna be very much like an mmorpg.

I definitely plan on making the bytes have feelings. They will have artificial intelligence.

I would love to see you design your own tamer and byte. I'll try to post more information soon.

Thanks for the input.

This looks pretty sweet. If I make a character with a byte and a backstory could he have a cameo? I do have one suggestion though. If the technology is based on holograms, why not have a more advanced controller that what appears to be an old t-mobile sidekick.

ShellYeah In reply to Adoroam [2011-08-05 05:33:30 +0000 UTC]

I was actually hoping that people would be interesting in creating their own tamer/byte and let me use them in my comic. There's gonna be a lot of battles and it would not only be easier for me but I think it would be really fun to feature other artist's creature designs in the comic.

You do make a good point, I might have to redesign the controller.

cupil [2011-08-04 12:26:28 +0000 UTC]

The Story reminds me a little bit of Medabots. The main kid, Ikki starts off his adventure having finally saved up enough money for a robot buddy.

I really like the idea of a monster series where a 'trainer' has full control over how their creature looks.(unless I'm reading that wrong.) I'd seriously play that. At the same time though, the Bytes being something intangible like holograms sort of gives it impression of detachment. . .Although looking it up as I type this, it seems that researchers have been using motion-tracking and an ultrasound tactile display to make holograms touchable. So I guess it'd be safe to assume that Bytes are based off of the latter thing? Unless they are supposed to be old-style holograms that are ghost like?---arg I confused myself. X[ Having them be touchable would make for stronger bonds. But from in-world perspective an intangible pet would be safer, in the sense that it could only 'harm' others like itself and pose no real threat to whatever child may purchase one.

Human characters look good, I really like Juniper's hat and her baggy pants. Friend guy has nice colors and the fashion of both is something I can believably see around a campus or something. Juniper's proportionally larger head makes me think she's significantly younger than the orange shirt dude. Although this maybe due to the fact that this image of Juniper seems to be the same one from an earlier piece. The Monster design is both cute and cool, and most importantly, distinguishable from other mon shows as far as I can tell. I love Moonmon's hooded jumpsuit body thing, and the face and jester cap-like head portray a mischievous character.

Do Bytes stay fixed to a single form or can they "upgrade"?

Would I read a comic about this: Yes. I like the monster raising genre, and would probably read it based on that and liking your art. Though I can't really promise whether or not I'll stick with it; it all depends on how things develop for the characters and story.

I think it's interesting partly because it had me finding out about touchable holograms. But I'll have to agree that you might want to find a better goal than "becoming the best". It seems to be a bit of narrative trap. 1. "Always someone better" where one can expect the main character to conveniently lose at times that could've defined them as the "best" or at least could've reached some kind of milestone in their in-universe career.
2. The there's the flip side where the hero is made to win all of the time. Regardless of any kind factors that would say otherwise. There may have been a supporting character that actually needed the big tournament's money, or another team with genuinely good teamwork and strategy compared to the heroes' deus ex machina.
Both of these could be done right: The first one has a more realistic approach to this type of competitive setting, and lends itself more to personal and (possibly)physical growth for the hero. The second case I can be a fan of provided if the hero is likable and fun to watch, and if the way they pull a victory makes sense.

It's only believable within a Videogame setting because the rival trainers are usually just unchanging sprites with predetermined monster(s), levels and attacks, allowing the player to grind and beat everything in sight. As the player, one actually gets a sense of hard work and time put into the hero's quest thus making it fulfilling from that perspective. Anything outside of a videogame calls for a lot of different things all of which may have been done before.

What defines the "Best" among Byte users? The number of tournament won? A literal number one spot in some kind of worldwide top ten list?

An alternate "Byte" world would make it too Digimon-y and the current futuristic hi-tech "holy moley! Holographic Monsters!" setting is already awesome as is. Another plane of reality may take away from it. Maybe something like a huge conspiracy involving the company that distributes Bytes? ...But then that's a pretty tired plot too... Hmmmm

Sorry there's so much rambling, There's probably so much that I'm missing or forgetting to say. Best of luck on this project. I like it so far.

First I would like to say thanks. Your comments are always very in-depth and helpful. I was really hoping you would add your input.

Yup, you read right. They can create their own creatures. I'm definitely gonna have fun with that.

Initially the bytes were gonna be just ordinary holograms except not so ghostly. They would appear to look like real creatures but can't be touched. Honestly I had no idea there were touchable holograms though I'm torn between the two now. Making them touchable could pose danger. Maybe there could be some form of safety feature though I'm not sure what exactly.

I'm glad the age difference is noticeable. He is a few years older than Juniper.

Bytes are definitely able to upgrade, a few different ways actually.

I guess the story isn't so much about "becoming the best" but more of simply completing the game/upgrading to the max level. At least that's what I've come up with so far. I'm still working on the full story.

I've thrown around the idea of some conspiracy involving the bytes but haven't come up with any ideas that I like yet. So I'm not sure if I'll do anything like that.

Thanks again for your comment. I really appreciate your input. It seems like you've covered pretty much everything.

Maybe the Bytes' level of physical interactivity can depend on what activity they are being used for. The classic intangible hologram form can be reserved for battle and basic travel(like phasing through large crowds of people). Though I guess when a Byte user is moving around, the Byte stays in their Byte disc. The "tangible" form can be reserved for peaceful recreation, like virtual grooming or play or trying out how so and so upgrade looks on one's monster buddy. Thinking about it makes me want to make a Bytes team of my own.

ShellYeah In reply to cupil [2011-08-06 04:34:34 +0000 UTC]

Hmm I'm gonna have to really think about what I want to do. I like the idea of being able to change the level of interactivity depending on what activity your doing with your byte. I would imagine that it's a matter of preference on travelling with your byte, some would keep them in their discs, while others would keep them by their side. So being able to phase through crowds would be good. I was also thinking maybe the owner wears some type of device that makes the byte touchable only to the owner, so someone wouldn't be able to attack a person directly with their byte.

I would love to see you design your own bytes team. Go for it!

FFFFF jawesome! *wants her own byte*

Story: it is a bit digimon, I won't deny that, but then again I've seen some similar concepts in other stories (ex. Monster Rancher, Beyblade, or whatnot) so it's fine, it's not like there's something that hasn't been done yet...
Characters: I LOVE THEM! Your designs are ever so awesome ; w ;
Would I read the comic? HELL YES!
Interesting, yes.

Ahh your comment totally made my day!! Definitely gave me the confidence to continue the project. You see it the same way I do, yea it's clearly similar to digimon but it's not really an issue. It's that way because digimon is one of my favorite shows and a huge inspiration to me. I feel that monster training shows(like digimon) have become more like a genre rather than copying.

Aw, I'm glad to hear that!

Well, that being said, good luck with the comic, can't wait to see it :3
