Description Recently I got the chance to visit one of our local historical monuments, which might also be subject of my master thesis design. It's a very beautiful, yet rundown, old, massive structure with its very own character and quite a bit of history to tell.

Hello ! here !

What is appealing in this piece ?
- The composition and structure are awesome : the angle you used creates a very powerful impression and the architecture stands out in a proud manner. These walls look cold and solid, and they contribute to the silent atmosphere. Everything seems quite heavy and dark, despise the very fair tones shown. You did a great job at conveying this idea of strength. To me, these walls could be prison walls, livid and emotionless.
- The monochromatic effect is very effective here. I like the fact the fair tones revel (spl ?) every little default. It may convey the idea that the building has seen so many things, so many faces, that every little detail got printed on its surface. It is full of melancholy, and the scene becomes very powerful and deep thanks to these tones. Great job with that !
- The mix of different yet similar patterns is also visually interesting. I like the fact everything is mainly shaped with straight lines, breaking the space, yet we still can find some curves, thanks to the holes in the upper parts of the walls. These holes give some intensity to the composition, as if they were eyes looking everywhere. It adds some "personality" to the walls, which would have been quite empty without these eyes.
- I also enjoy the way you tried to create a neat photo, because it looks like everything is important, and as if background was mixing with foreground. It erases the limits of the different grounds : we don't see a wall in front of another one, we see shapes and lines mixing together in a very structured way. I enjoy this feeling of order !

What could be improved ?
- It could be more integrated to the shape of the photo : what I mean is that the lines could correspond to the corners of the photo, to create something even more abstract. Moreover, I feel as if the center line wasn't totally vertical, which can be disturbing. Finally, I think cutting the photo a bit lower, to show a longer part of the central column, would be interesting. It would reinforce the idea of power depicted by the angle. What do you think?
- The contrast could be reinforced : as you used a monochromatic effect, I think darker shadows could be beneficial to the piece. It would prevent the piece from looking dull and add some intensity and depth to it.Β

As a side note, I would be curious to know why you didn't put any title to your piece.

Overall, you did a very good shot, and only some minor things could be improved. I like the way you put everything together.
KEEP IT UP AND HAPPY CREATING !

Thanks a lot for this wonderful comment! I really appreciate the time and effort you invested in this

It's great for me to hear, that you find so many positive aspects in my work I'm really trying to get better at photography at the moment, so hearing that there's already quite much I did right is always great I think the tip you gave me about integrating to the shapes of the photo would really be a great idea for shots like this, since I really tried to keep it somewhat abstract! For future shots I will definitely try to keep this in mind and implement it if suitable for what I want to depict So great thanks for that. I tried to get the vertical "vertical", but maybe you are right and it still does not fit quite As for the cut I was not quite sure about where to cut off the column to be true - I decided to cut this way in favour of the abstract and a bit painterly look the image has as it is, but you could of course have a point here.
As for the title, I'm not that creative when it comes to titles I have to admit Usually the titles of my deviations are somewhat documentary and naming this one for what it was seemed somewhat inadequate, since my aim was to appreciate the photographed part for this special spatial quality it creates and its simple yet complex shape. I felt a viewer might give a closer look if not guided by a title and figure things out for himself/herself, that's at least what I do when confronted with unnamed images

So, thanks again for your well-structured and very constructive feedback, it will definitely be of good use for my future work

You are very welcome !

I am glad it was of good help. If you need anything else, drop me a note.

I understand you point on abstraction. I wasn't sure about that soooo... I mentioned it anyway.

And regarding the title, well that's up to you ! I agree that a title can orientate the thoughts of the audience. But in another way, you can use this tool to orientate its thoughts in a special direction.Β

You are welcome !

You are definitely right! If the muse is kissing me I would always go for the title as well. Though I think none is better than a bad one
And thanks again for your insights

Hey there! Thank you for your submission toΒ  Β for feedback!

The composition of this photo is really cool! Maybe i would suggest you to try to play with some of the shadows and light a bit more, so it will have some more feeling of space, but it's optional. Right now it somewhat looks like painting and it's also very cool effect

This is honestly very neat do you buy any chance know when the structure was builtΒ

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

sheorun In reply to Synthwave-Shark [2016-09-11 09:59:36 +0000 UTC]

Thank you It has undergone many changes in structure throughout its history. The earliest parts were built in 1828 as part of a renaissance fortress. What you can see on the photo is a later addition which became integral part of the building in 1885. While in 1924 a whole wing of the building was torn down, most of it survived up until today

You are certainly welcome, and ok that pretty neat actually so during its time as a fortress was this certain area that you where standing in used for anything significant? Plus why was the wing torn down in 1924 but hey at least most of it survivedΒ

sorry for for the amount of questionsΒ

No problem! Feel free to aks as many questions as you'd like
This area did not exist back when it was a fortress. You can see two thumbnails in my description, these are photos of the part that dates back that far. The part where the photo was taken is a water tower that was added later on, when this building, among others on the site were reused and became a cannon foundry. But with the war over and not much further need in masses of weaponry 1924 the whole site was closed down and since most of them were simple industrial buildings none of them became listed and therefore tearing down parts was an easy thing to do. Gladly this changed and still two of these buildings (one among them is this one) survived to still tell their story

Synthwave-Shark In reply to sheorun [2016-09-12 02:35:53 +0000 UTC]

Ok! So that pretty neat so this might be a silly idea but I guess during the war then this was in use as a cannon foundery the water tower served it purpose to well help the makers and or troops? By the way during that time how controlled this place during that time frame? Also it does suck that during that time it never got listed and torn down but just out of curiosity do you know when it got its historical designation. But hey I'm happy there here to this day and I hope to see them myself!

sheorun In reply to Synthwave-Shark [2016-09-12 09:29:10 +0000 UTC]

Hm, I think now we're at a point where my knowledge about this building comes to an end I know, that it originally was built at that place as defence wall and also surved this purpose during war - sucessfully. As for the water tower, i guess it served production reasons, it is not at all comparative to what you would usually call a water tower in size. And, sorry, no, I don't know when it actually got listet

WOW, is this a photo or a picture? either way this is AMAZING
because if it's a photo then it looks a lot like a drawing
but if it's a drawing then it looks like a photo so it's like a loop
i love the angle from which you look at the corner/wall
wonderful detail, nice shading
there isn't much to tell you to improve this pic

It's fascinating how architectural ways to overcome gravity sometimes still look the same in modern concrete buildings as they did in old building with columns made of timber or stone ...
What kind of building was this, if I may ask?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

sheorun In reply to Telian24 [2016-08-13 09:59:53 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, this is definitely very interesting! Especially since these old structures that were not even meant for public intervention oftentimes have way more quality than those today that are acutally built for impressing the public. The building itself was part of a renaissance fortress in its early days, though the part that can be seen on this photo didn't exist back then. It's the supporting structure of a watertower that was added on top of the building as it became a canon foundry.
