Description It's a new kind of storyboarding tutorial…

This is the storyboard I drew for a 30-second SpongeBob Burger King commercial. See the original commercial here: www.dailymotion.com/video/xczt…

I have marked up THIS particular submission with commentary notes to give some insight into the storyboarding process!

You can see the unmarked storyboard pages at >> bit.ly/SpongeBobCommercial <<

That was so interesting to see the notes and what means what! It's very helpful with all the different shots and horizon lines. Love this, and am totally about to go through your DA to see if I can find more!!

Amazing! This'll help me a bit more on how to storyboard (as i want to be a pro animator, and i think storyboards would help me if i ever did short [Flash-]animations along the way).

And of course, i'm a big fan of SpongeBob! XP

Hi Mr Cohen big fan! I found this very insightful and wanted to ask about the part where you talk about the "jump cut". I understand what a jump cut is and why you wanted to avoid it but I can't seem to wrap my brain around why the horizon shifting causes it to not be a jump cut. I re-watched the commercial but don't recall seeing that other shot. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

The main thing is to make sure that one background looks different from the background in the next scene so that it doesn't look like the characters are popping from one place to another against the same background. In most cases it's easy to make a change in the background because people are standing near different walls and other background elements; in this case, the only possibility is to lower or raise the horizon. I hope that helps!

Yes I get it now. Thank you so much for your response. It has made my day and hopefully the next few weeks easier as I will be working on a storyboard. I shall make great use of everything you have talked about. Thank you so much.

Is it just me or is this the most on model storyboard I've ever seen? Usually I see storyboards and they just vaguely look similar to the source material. But you went all out and accurate!

shermcohen In reply to DonMomentum [2013-01-24 19:04:23 +0000 UTC]

It depends on the show...If you have a good crew of animators, you can afford to draw a bit more losely. Some show-runners want to make sure that everything looks exactly like the storyboard, and in those cases the storryboard artists have to make sure that every last detail is included. I think that this one was drawn so cleanly because it was for an advertisement, and it had to be approved by people that are not used to reading rough storyboards.

This is highly informative for people like me that were never really taught about storyboarding in college but still wanted to learn, and it answered some questions I had pertaining to some of the terminology on the sheets.

Thanks a lot for taking the time out and posting these!
