Description Double whammy today for the last two pieces.
This "classic" (or "newseen" as the fans call it) set of mechs is intended to refresh the art for some early era mechs.
My goal was to be as faithful as possible to the originals to deliver something recognizable and iconic, yet still come up with something original.

Best Wasp ever!

( I want it so badly in MWO and HBS Battletech!)

What made you decide to give the Wasp two hands? If i recall correctly, it only had one hand in the older artwork.
Not a complaint, i like two hands, but i'm still interested in the reasons behind it.

Along with many of the early mechs and artwork, not everything matched. The Wasps record sheet shows hand actuators on both hands, so we followed that.

Ah, i guess i'm misremembering it, because i thought that the record sheets also lacked the RA hand actuator. My mistake.

For the life of me I still wonder what the designers of the game were thinking mounting an srm2 rack in the hip of this mech. It was a very odd placement

I think it looks cool. And they can still be aimed, especially being missiles.

No amount of legal difference stops HG from being IP trolls. They'd sue over anything.

I was kind of following whats going on and it seems that HG in their greed lost most of their rights about all those mechs since they never had the copyright anyway as it seems. So any attempt to bully battletech related stuff will be fruitless from now on and they might even have to pay for the trouble they cause. It would seem we are in the clear right now and we are finally free of HG. The japanese owners dont really seem to care much about battletech material since they got their own problems cause too many different ppl were involved in the creation of macross and the copyrights are all over the place. Finally we might get to see all those nice mechs again in action.

Nothing is over until the court cases are over. HG has won in the past, which sets the precedent for their claims, licensing rights or not.

Shimmering-Sword In reply to NeWorldComics [2017-12-04 19:09:04 +0000 UTC]

Loooooots of practice. And use reference/inspiration when needed. You don't need to copy, but considering mechs aren't real it's ok to be inspired by the design styles of other artists.

You even kept the leg mounted SRM launcher
I wonder, if the Wasp ever makes it into MWO, will they put the launcher in the leg or somewhere else?
Would be the first mech with leg mounted weapons, the Summoner/Thor should have launchers in the legs too, as well as the Hellbringer/Loki, but they were left out.

Shimmering-Sword In reply to Heretic1311 [2017-12-04 19:08:02 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure about the alt variants, but the primes of the Thor and Loki don't have leg missiles. The art showed launcher type tubes, but they aren't missiles. At least on the Loki they can be the A-Pods.
Leg weapons could be done in MWO, they'd just need to have a vertical aim axis. The main problem is no one would want to use them, with how powerful hardpoint locationing is in the game

Heretic1311 In reply to Shimmering-Sword [2017-12-04 22:54:22 +0000 UTC]

True, low hardpoints would be highly valuable if things like conventional combat vehicle and infantry were available.
But none of that is (currently) part of MWO, high mounts is what players seek.

Nonsense, I need just one leg shot and the only thing that can do the trick before the upper torso turns on this mech, is these SRM's. I would definitely use it.

Wait a minute.

So...

FASA created two completely different mechs- the Valkyrie and the Wasp- out of the exact same original Japanese mecha design, the VF-1S Valkyrie???

Shimmering-Sword In reply to EVAUnit4A [2017-12-03 22:23:48 +0000 UTC]

Crusader, Valkyrie, Wasp, Stinger, and Phoenix Hawk are all veritech based.

EVAUnit4A In reply to Shimmering-Sword [2017-12-03 22:35:21 +0000 UTC]

That's not what I mean.  The Veritechs VF-1 Valkyries all share the same body, but it is the head that makes the difference between the different models.  The VF-1D takes it a step further by being a two-seat trainer.  So, my point is that FASA used the -1S (aka "Roy Focker Special" or "Commander" version) specifically twice for two different Battlemechs- both the 30t Valkyrie and the 25t Wasp.

I'm not into macross enough to know all the variants, what i do know is the BT designs have never looked close enough to them to matter

Knighttrap In reply to Shimmering-Sword [2017-12-04 14:46:32 +0000 UTC]

I'd about 50/50 agree with you on that statement.  The Wasp, Valkyrie and "Ost Pods" look completely different then their Macross counterparts.  But in the early days most of the novels were almost the same picture.  It was so bad that Stinger, Phoenix hawk and Crusader still had the "VF" logo on the picture along with the Archer and Warhammer had "SDF" on their leg(SDF stands for Super Dimension Fortress).

The best of all this though is that on a couple of colored pictures, the U.N. Spacy logo is on the crusaders left leg.  a137.idata.over-blog.com/3/87/…

Now I do believe the redesigns done in the original TRO 3050 were enough to not be an issue although I think Project Phoenix went to far.  But your designs are by far the best when it come to capturing these classics. Not only are they beautiful and capture the original feel of the designs.  They also are some of the most realistic BattleMech designs I've seen outside MWO's redesigns. It would be a real treat to see your take on the entire classic line of 3025 mechs or at least the art for the TROs in the Beginner Box mechs.

Shimmering-Sword In reply to Knighttrap [2017-12-04 19:03:09 +0000 UTC]

I'm focusing more on the truly "official" depiction though, which the primary depiction is the lineart. At the time, there was no legal issue with looking exactly like the macross mechs, so some cover artists decided to reference macross artwork instead of the canon battletech designs, this made them technically incorrect, if prettier.
Of course the warhammer/marauder/archer/rifleman etc didn't change enough in their official depictions to escape legal action once it happened. The whole thing was just too much of a mess for FASA to cover, so they went with the safest route and made everything unseen, even perfectly legal and uncontested non macross stuff.
Eventually this will all be a thing of the past. Either in the current court case, or later through license expiration, HG is going to lose their power to troll Battletech.

The VF-1 Valkyrie comes in four flavors, and are most-easily identified by the head on it (repaints not withstanding, mind you)-

VF-1D  two-seat trainer version; alternately can be refitted for recconaisance.  Two ear laser cannons and two rectangular eye cameras, typically seen with tan and orange livery.

VF-1A  single-seat standard version (i.e. grunts, redshirts, etc).  One top-of-the-head laser cannon and one square eye camera, typically seen in tan and white.

VF-1J  single-seat squadron commander version.  Two ear laser cannons and one triangle eye camera, typically seen in white with the trim based on squad leader's personal color.  (Most notably, Rick Hunter/Hikaru Ichijo's was white with red trim, while Max and Miriya Genius' were blue and red with white trim respectively).

VF-1S  single-seat group commander/ace pilot version.  Four ear laser cannons and one rounded-triangle eye camera; typically seen in white with two colors of trim.  The most prolific example is the "Roy Fokker Special" (white w/ black and yellow); although in the movie "Super-Dimensional Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?", several others were seen piloting their own versions of it- Hikaru (white, black/red), Max (white, black/blue) and Kakizaki (white, black/green).

Looks like out of the original 14 with the starter box set you are only missing the Crusader.  Any chance your going to do that one?

I doubt CGL will want them done, as giving them attention just brings forward their issues. Also almost no one is ever going to play with them on the table anyway.
