Description
The result of tonights LiveStream. Though I should start to expand my space art subject matter. Definitely going to be needing orbital structures for my story.A Massive foundry shipworks and service station for the Star Protectorate fleet. Various sized ships are in for resupply, including a massive flagship.
Having been expanded in pieces over many decades, this station is nothing elegant, but it's power and importance cannot be understated.

Just a bunch of grey blocks in a purple space

Nice pic
But it looks a bit odd because things dont fade out in space . Fading only happens in an atmosphere

With a little space dust and the "rule of cool" I think we can make it work

Perhaps it's cheating to draw it that way, but for whatever reason I love that the spacestation fades out. It makes me feel like it's so colossal it goes on forever.

Haha, yea if I had the time I would define it more instead of fading so much, but atmosphere is nice

What brush settings so you use for the stars...Cos this is awsome, I like the colours used...stars facinate me...awsome

Looks like for this one I just used my small round brush with size and opacity control on, pretty messy.
When I want it nicer, I turn off the opacity control, so i always lay solid stars, but of different sizes. Then I use a soft brush on overlay mode and brush in some glow around the bigger ones, you can see this effect on the near purple star (sun) on this one.
Never use pure white stars (add a little color) and never use pure black space, things look more alive this way

How do you put it on overlay mode?

Shimmering-Sword In reply to Archie621 [2010-08-10 22:36:07 +0000 UTC]
Just as layers have a blending mode chosen at the top of the layers menu, brushes blend mode can be changed from the top middle of the screen (where your active tools options are).
And if you don't know, overlaying is neutral (has no effect) at middle grey, and will add light/dark/color depending on how your chosen color moves away from that middle grey.

Well it's not nearly as large as one of those, but while my flagship weapons wont be cracking any planets, it could probably severely damage or destroy that Eclipse. With these super weapon vessels, it all comes down to who gets the first shot though. I don't really make it a point to compare technologies cross stories/universes, usually gets lopsided. I also don't know why you would want to build ships that take so much resource, just to destroy planets which are the thing you should be fighting over

And again my thoughts- I think that station with military type architecture must look more aggressive, and ships, which are docking, must be defended more accurately (say, maybe some hangar type plating around ships or something like stationary BIG defense structures for docked vessels).
Oh, and about flagships- if i was emperor (any kind, there's no matter, what type), I planed my flagship construction somewhere in quiet place, hidden from everyone. That's more logica, i think. Anyway, work is nice! +

I always like thoughts, grounds for thinking and discussion.
This station is firstly a shipyard, where ships are made, so a factory. Factories, nor any colossal structures that I've seen military or not, do not exhibit 'aggressive' architecture. Utility comes first. This, and I think everything talked about here is very subjective to opinions, just as each story/universe should have it's unique points.
The engagement of naval ships in my story is largely at very long range with evasive maneuvers being a ships primary mechanism of defense. In this way, should a station and it's local fleets come under attack, priority is to launch any docked forces, and if possible give options for launch vectors. Hence why there are no deep or closed bays for large ships, so that they can do more than just reverse out if needed.
You are right about the flagship construction, the foundry contracted to construct such ships is much deeper in Star Protectorate space, in very controlled travel lanes, though it's not quite hidden from all view. The large scale dock here is shaped to accept any wedge shaped ship, which just pulls in as close as it can.
How's that sound

Anderty In reply to Shimmering-Sword [2010-07-06 07:50:34 +0000 UTC]
Hm... then, that scale station is too big for any of planet orbits, cuz it will made changes on planet gravity, so station must be somewhere deeper in space, where stations own gravity will be priority! I just imagine question, how Citadel (ME) was stayed all this time in one place- then i realized, that citadel was ONLIEST big structure there, that means really big stations must stay in clear space.

Shimmering-Sword In reply to Anderty [2010-07-06 08:56:57 +0000 UTC]
Which is just why I don't have any planet visible here
Though the discussion of such large stations disrupting planetary gravity is only a stronger discussion for single moon Earth type worlds, those in a very fragile existence, or existing colonies which may suffer from a gravitational change.
Many of the planets in our system have multiple satellites, not that they are ideal places to live, it just shows that it's still possible to have such orbital stations.
I definitely wouldn't place one of these around an eden world, but it wouldn't be an issue around a gas giant or barren planet, the nearby resources being especially useful.

Anderty In reply to Shimmering-Sword [2010-07-06 09:55:47 +0000 UTC]
As i remember, gas giants don't have much resources. If station would be on one of biggest asteroids in asteroid belt, that will be best variant for effective foundry. So, if you place foundry in asteroid (or small moon type planet in belt), where other asteroids gave big quantum of recourses, and if belt is around gas giant (for gas materials), then this foundry will be best of the best... thought...

Hgnnn, this would take a lot of work to refine. But the true reason I kept loose is that I don't want to invest time into something that I don't want to attach myself to. I'm trying to spend less time refining (potential for attachment) and more time searching for new ideas, for my story.
Now if YOU want to finish it, ill give a highres and you be my guest
