Description

There are only 2 days left on the kickstarter for Rangers Project: The Protectorate Wars digital art book! We've been funded, so any new backers can be confident they'll be getting their reward. The current optimal pledge of $17 will get you the 100 page art book, and a 30 page additional art book of my past work on the Rangers Project. One final push, check it out here:  kck.st/1dkwhua

Here's a first piece of work for the book (I wont be posting everything online, much will be book exclusive). Some may have seen this design before here fav.me/d5t6a3f and its almost ready to be produced as a miniature. The modeler/caster will be launching a kickstarter for it in a few weeks, so miniatures collectors be ready (12cm tall resin kit for 1:144 scale).

Dat fluff:

Designed for engaging enemy shielded units, this mech is controlled by its pilot through a neural jack in order to utilize its full flexibility. It has its own shield generators to protect itself from enemy fire, and especially from offensive shield forms. The majority of its weapons are effective at penetrating shields. Its shoulder pack rail guns provide long range punch, using solid slugs that cannot be pre-detonated. Up close it can use the pile launchers on its forearms to fire heavy projectiles that can overpower the friction of enemy shielding through crushing mass. Missiles afford it some extra ranged power and utility, often loading a variety of munitions. A handheld auto cannon (looped munitions feed for a sealed mechanism) also provides some supplementary firepower, but is often quickly depleted in an initial strike then dropped.

These neural mechs are the nightmares of inexperienced Elemental soldiers, and rightfully so when such towering mechs are purpose built for such a hunt.

Neat, like a slender variant of the Tau Imperial XV104 Riptide Battlesuit. Heavy duty, heavy weapon systems, good shielding. And perhaps as large as the XV104.

I Like.

I know the last painting you did of this was more of a rough sketch (and it looked really cool back then) but now... all I can say is holy cow!

This painting is so crisp and clean. It really shows off how the BattleTech stuff you've been posting lately has been really good practice.

Love the contrast and positioning -- very dynamic.  The crushed ice chunks around the feet really sells the weight... it's got legs that remind me of Jurassic Park's T-Rex (I'm thinking of the jeep chase scene).

Definitely looking forward to the artbook now!

The battletech work helped, but mostly in the 3D translation I think as it gave me lots of practice with that workflow. Most of my "battletech tricks" aren't present here.

Start saving those dollars then. I'd say roughly two weeks and it's kickstarter will pop up.

Thank you for no blue lasers. Finished work is great Ant! Looking forward to more!

I missed the end, but the shield is  nice touch, especially the way that round disintegrated and made a wave in the shield. I also like that you kept the lighting specific, however I would like to see the eyes/camera glow on the head,  just something I always liked myself, unless it was glass or VR vision ala Metal Gear Rex. Either way, nice finish.

Shimmering-Sword In reply to GraySharkStudios [2013-11-21 01:37:55 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, as I said in the stream, lasers are quite rare in my setting, big and bulky devices reserved for particular uses. These high tech friction shields are rare, but a more basic type that works over armor plating does well to diffuse laser beams (no help for infantry though).

ah ya you mentioned this. Well I like your thoroughness with your own tech; your descriptions of weapons choices and such show logic and thoughtfulness. You know what comes next "Im the same way" (You tired of hearing that yet? )
