Actually, Celestia ran away and hid in the forest, and took her little sister with her. Her parents are more like spiritual manifestations of their elements rather than entities, and so they probably know what Celestia is up to but are opposed to divine intervention.

Keep in mind everything here is just fanfiction. I'm not trying to force this to canon.
Though I never had time to fit in exactly what point the comic zooms forward to, what you see here is in the earlier parts of her time living in the forest with Discord. They were good friends as children, only able to see each other every so often, but eventually she completely sacked her parents and decided she wanted a playmate/physical being to spend time with, and took Luna with her. Her parents have not talked to her since then, but they probably didn't even when she was not hidden in the forest. Throughout the comic I tried to portray Celestia's independence, and the fact that her parents were elements themselves (thus not very communicative) made it easier for her to jump so readily into the commitment of running away.

The major hole in the comic (I don't know if you can help me with this or not) is the palace/ castle in the woods that was in page... I think it was page 7 or 8. It was featured in several panels following that, but it was either too dark to see clearly or it was covered by a speech bubble. Originally I just told myself it could be Dicord and Celestia's dwelling, something they had built themselves, having evolved from a childhood treehouse into something more substantial. But after realizing neither Discord or Celestia were architects, and that it was an entire PALACE, not just a cottage for three, I realized I had a problem.
What are your thoughts on the palace in the forest?

1.) Discord can tell the laws of physics to sit down and shut up.
2.) Both of them are tough enough to survive having the entire structure collapse on them multiple times in their trial and error.
3.) IIRC you only ever show it off in the distance... it could have walls much much thicker than any real world dwelling would be practical with, and be butt-ugly at close range.
4.) A lot of the problems with working with stone MAY go away if one can fuse the blocks together seamlessly, and/or mold the stone like clay. Between being 1/3 Earth Pony interacting with her Unicorn powers, and Discord being... well, Discord, I could see that happening.
5.) While the distinction between a palace and a castle may be vague in this case, in one respect it is definitely NOT a castle: It doesn't have to stand up to sappers, catapults, and scaling ladders. Nor does it have any need for: arrow slits, murderholes, a working set of gates, portcullises, nor a moat (not that that would be that hard to design and execute if it is seated firmly on bedrock since they already have some way of working the stone, either physically or magically).
6.) Depending on how you have the world set up and how much work they put into maintaining it, it may not be subject to wind, rain, thermal variations (which can cause cracking either directly or through the effects of water expanding as it freezes in cracks).

Between these things I am not NECESSARILY seeing a problem, although there could be one. I have a mechanical engineering degree, FWIW.

Excellent. Excellent excellent. I might not be able to fit all of that into the description of the 'dwelling/palace' when the characters discuss it, but it definitely gives me something to work with. Thank you!
