Dang so this is the biggest file ever, haha.
This is a quick (?) walkthrough of how I did the colors for the most recent page , using the first panel as an example.
I was going for a more general overview here, more of my thought process than a set of instructions of how to color like I do. Personally I don't think you should color the way I do, I take kind of a long time and anyways, everyone should develop their own style.
If you're one of those people who NEEDS TO KNOW RIGHT NOW what settings and such I use, here is a list for you:
- fill tool
- gradient tool
- default round brush
- default soft brush
- dropper tool
As of March is use Photoshop CS4, and as of last month I use a Wacom Cintiq (before that I was using an Intuos 3)/
I don't use fancy brushes or settings in Photoshop other than messing with opacity and pressure.
And my final color file for this page had these layers:
- Frame + Text
- Lines
- Soli Shading
- Soli Base Color
- Room Details (several layers flattened into one file)
- Room Shadows
- Room
- Base
Google Sketchup, a free and simple 3-D modeling program, is available here .
Hope that satisfies your curiosity

Fuck me, you are so good at this. I almost feel bad taking shortcuts from you because the INCREDIBLE PROFICIENCY you have developed in the course of working them out is so, so far ahead of what anyone could achieve by just "following instructions" and yet your tutorials are so good, they actually DO cut down enormous amounts of slog for anyone following them.
So uh

haha XD Well, I'm glad it was useful! I don't know if 10 hrs coloring = INCREDIBLE PROFICIENCY but it is nice of you to say.

You, sir, are hilarious and also inspiring. Well done, clearly planned and if you need to make a little extra cash might I suggest teaching classes. You are VERY good.

This is an incredibly comprehensive tutorial coming from someone who legitimately knows their shit. Referring to the way our brains process info from left to right, commenting on contrast, and rendering a scene before adding characters... you definitely make this more than a hobby, you're a great example to those on this sight who lack self-imposed standards!

First of all, thank you SO MUCH FOR SKETCHUP. Seriously, holy crap. Secondly, thanks for this informative break-down of both practice and theory. It just decreased my learning curve like no-one's business.

This may help me to stop being lazy and actually do well on these kind of "I WANT TO DIE" coloring projects. And thank you for the tip to do the background first, then the figure. It's really hard to remember, but it does make a difference. This is so great, thank you so very much.

Thank you for that. Though even if I would use such a wondeful linebase like the one you did ( I totally suck a backrounds) I would be able to shade them so wonderful like you do.
Such tutorial like the one you made are wonderful for people like me who want to understand the process step by step.
I hope that one day I will be able to reach such a high level.
I really love your work.

I don't have a lineart tut (yet)! I just use the default hard brush with my tablet though, if that's enough info XD As for sketchup, there is info in the comment box under the walkthrough

THIS is amazing. Because I learned about an EXTREMELY useful program that I actually happen to have a need of just this instant. I was just about to embark on my first full-comic-style piece and was worrying about the backgrounds and cohesiveness. Particularly because I have to reuse the backgrounds. And this is PERFECT. So thank you so much for multiple tips that have come to me just in the nick of time! : D

Thanks, that was very insightful. Where did you learn this? This is the kind of thing I wish they'd teach us in college, not that there is any digital art course in the country.

shingworks In reply to Majnouna [2010-09-30 16:11:02 +0000 UTC]
I learned it through trial and error XD And through the scientific method. I color differently depending on the page, but recently I've been breaking my backgrounds down like this.

Oh my god a Meek coloring tutorial yesssss
Just a quick question. When you're adding the colors to a character, how do you usually make them fit in with the environment's colors? Do you have a base pallette that you apply, then add in some layer overlays? Or do you steal some colors from the environment and adjust with that? Or do you just change the colors manually? Or... something else? [/barage of "or"s]
Anyways, this is an wondeful tutorial. I actually want to start doing comics someday (pff, someday... still so much shit to learn fjsdkl) so it's helpful to see how someone else goes about coloring their own.
oh no 666 downloads :0
