Dang so this is the biggest file ever, haha.
This is a quick (?) walkthrough of how I did the colors for the most recent page , using the first panel as an example.
I was going for a more general overview here, more of my thought process than a set of instructions of how to color like I do. Personally I don't think you should color the way I do, I take kind of a long time and anyways, everyone should develop their own style.
If you're one of those people who NEEDS TO KNOW RIGHT NOW what settings and such I use, here is a list for you:
- fill tool
- gradient tool
- default round brush
- default soft brush
- dropper tool
As of March is use Photoshop CS4, and as of last month I use a Wacom Cintiq (before that I was using an Intuos 3)/
I don't use fancy brushes or settings in Photoshop other than messing with opacity and pressure.
And my final color file for this page had these layers:
- Frame + Text
- Lines
- Soli Shading
- Soli Base Color
- Room Details (several layers flattened into one file)
- Room Shadows
- Room
- Base
Google Sketchup, a free and simple 3-D modeling program, is available here .
Hope that satisfies your curiosity

You would have no idea how ridiculously excited I got when I saw "Chinchilla" as a heading... and it built up too, because my page was scrolling slowly and it was all like "Wait for it... wait for it... OMFGCHINCHILLA!" XD
Anyway, other than my random chinchilla-love-excitement-attack, I really liked the tutorial. I had no idea you used a 3D program, and was actually thinking about it for a while. (As in, "Why don't comic artists just make a 3D wireframe of their backgrounds? Wouldn't it make everything so much easier?!" Now I know that you do, I'm glad that someone else sees the reasoning in making one, rather than having to perspecterize a scene more times than necessary.)

Thank you so much for this. It's very helpful to see your process, and how I can change things that I've been finding frustrating in my own work. Much appreciation!

I have a question -- hopefully no one else has asked! Sorry if they have.
When you use the fill tool/paintbucket whatever, and you fill in your outlines, I seem to get pixels. Like, between the color and the lineart. I don't fill in the same layer, in fact they will be on separate layers completely! Is there some way to prevent this so I don't have to fix it with the brush tool (which takes waaay too much time)?
Btw, loved the tutorial.

If it's something angular, like a rectangle, I just zoom in and select on the line using the polygonal lasso and I fill with the paint bucket. But for flatting people and other shapes I just do it manually with a brush and carve out the parts I don't want
Tessa Stone/ vert is ninja does a pretty snazzy thing, where she works at high high resolution with a pencil tool. The pencil tool does not have 1/2 filled pixels, which is what causes that white line. That means you can just magic wand select areas and fill them in entirely with a paintbucket. The only weird thing is that the lines are jagged and not smooth, but if you zoom out it is impossible to tell.

Wow, quick response! XD
Thanks for the advice, its good to know I wasn't doing something horribly wrong. I'll keep all this in mind on my next coloring.

Awesome tutorial!
I don't suppose you have a tutorial for any of the other stages? Previsualisation, inking and such?

Aw.
Do you ever intend to? Because I'm sure a lot of other people are interested to know every little detail about how you create your awesome artwork. ^^

Well, I doubt I have enough info to fill an entire tutorial! I really just use default setting for everything, all the rest, like how I visualize my scenes, is my personal preference based on experience. I can't really write a tutorial on how to gain experience other than to suggest people go out and read books/ watch movie/ study comics/ etc. And I don't think I should be telling people how to do specific things like that, it feels like it would be a little arrogant

Oh, I just mean showing people how you personally do it. Like, in this tutorial, you explain why you set things up in a certain way, and I think it'd be interesting to see why you set things out the way you do in the first place. I'm working on a comic myself, and so I'm very interested to see other people's previsualisation thought processes. You recommend gaining experience by studying comics, well, yours is awesome, and it'd be easier to study it if people had access to that kind of thing, is all. :3

Yeah, I see your point... but as a teacher, I feel some misgivings about showing the process directly when learning it is a result of experimentation and understanding your personal style

Very helpful!
I have a hard time with backgrounds, and I guess it's because of the fundamental mistake of drawing them after drawing the characters.
Thanks!

I only just started using GIMP, and I was total fail for trying to color backgrounds last. This may be for photoshop, but it sure helps!

Excellent, excellent! Thanks so much for sharing the steps. I need to try Sketchup, as my brain wants to make all perspective into something not-quite Cubism. I really appreciate your explanation of how you can use the tonal variations to tie the scene together, yet keep it from being totally monochrome. Now all I need to do is fix my scanner.

Question! Which might be silly and obvious but still: Since you have more of a paintery style, but I see you do use a "flat" layer for characters, I'm curious how you do colour picking. Do you have a "swatch" palette of some kind for the characters that you pull from (i.e., "This colour is Soli's skin") that you use and then pull shading from the environment, do you pull from swatches but then change the colour to fit the environment/lighting, or do you just choose colours that look right for that scene, close enough to the character's colours in previous scenes to be roughly consistent?

shingworks In reply to Shazzbaa [2010-09-27 18:28:30 +0000 UTC]
Kind of a combination. I use a base color that I have either in other pictures or from the reference in my head and tweak them until it looks right? basically
