Dang so this is the biggest file ever, haha.

This is a quick (?) walkthrough of how I did the colors for the most recent page , using the first panel as an example.

I was going for a more general overview here, more of my thought process than a set of instructions of how to color like I do. Personally I don't think you should color the way I do, I take kind of a long time and anyways, everyone should develop their own style.

If you're one of those people who NEEDS TO KNOW RIGHT NOW what settings and such I use, here is a list for you:
- fill tool
- gradient tool
- default round brush
- default soft brush
- dropper tool

As of March is use Photoshop CS4, and as of last month I use a Wacom Cintiq (before that I was using an Intuos 3)/
I don't use fancy brushes or settings in Photoshop other than messing with opacity and pressure.

And my final color file for this page had these layers:
- Frame + Text
- Lines
- Soli Shading
- Soli Base Color
- Room Details (several layers flattened into one file)
- Room Shadows
- Room
- Base

Google Sketchup, a free and simple 3-D modeling program, is available here .

Hope that satisfies your curiosity

Not only did I learn quite a bit (via alternative ways to colour/shade images), but thanks to you I can now add proper backgrounds to my pictures! I've always been so terrible at designing rooms/buildings/etc, and Sketchup was something I had previously never even heard of! Thank you for posting this!

Adding light and shadows with the gradient tool is absolutely brilliant! I never would have thought it could be that easy. This also made me realize that I do focus on the characters too much and the background never quite looks cohesive because of it.

Full of useful tips and a beautiful end result. Great work! Thank you ^-^

awesome man, question though. I just downloaded the thing and tried modeling, when exporting with the simple out line mode it tends to delete edges. What settings do you use when exporting the background?

shingworks In reply to luckyde [2010-09-27 01:48:04 +0000 UTC]

mmm, actually I just copy paste a screen cap directly into photoshop! Since I'm only using it as a rough guide, I don't need it at high resolution or detail.

oh I get ya! Yeah, that would make it easier to work on instead of sketchup picking your line style for ya. Thanks man! I was going to storyboard 3-4 scenes but with this method i'll just design them in sketch up and save heaps of time on camera perspective attempts Thanks for this dude!

I dabbled in Sketchup a bit when composing a background for a comic I drew last year. It's really an invaluable tool, especially for those of us who understand, but hate having to work out, proper perspective every time it's time to draw a background.

Aside from that, you make a simple yet compelling point about working out the character(s) colors after the background, because it is indeed too easy to focus on characters to realize that they should be affected by their surroundings, not vice versa.

Great walkthrough!

Quick stupid question: How do you transfer your 3D model from sketchup to Photoshop?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

shingworks In reply to Banoranga [2010-09-27 01:23:20 +0000 UTC]

Just a screencap, then copypaste

Neat. O3O
*Now sees sketchup as a somewhat valuable tool.*

You could also try blender as a 3-D modeling program.
Not as easy as sketchup, but you can do more with it if you learn how. :U
Though for what you used sketchup for you wouldn't need the extra stuff like light sources and fluid animations and stuff. >3>
