Oh damn, oh shit
Its tutorial time 8D Cuz I have nothing else on my plate, obviously (I'm lying). Anyways I was feeling like not working on comics so I did this. As always, feel free to trace or whatever you need to do. Sorry if it is less in depth, this is more about the shapes and how to arrange them on the face vs an exhaustive listing of a bunch of details. Hopefully this will give you a place to begin so you can make your own variety, instead of having to rely on others and reffing (if you even need the help).
I'd like to add, this is exactly how I draw faces. If you like that and want to emulate it for some godawful reason, go ahead, I guess (though I strongly advise you to develop your own style). But hopefully the principles are basic enough to be applied to any style you like.

Out of your fine tutorials, this one is probably my favorite. The face is so important when it comes to making your characters different, and it's incredible that so many artists(lol anime) have what I call " Same Face syndrome". Everyone has a different face people. EVERYONE, unless you have a twin or something. If you want to make sure that your characters don't have Same Face syndrome, I would suggest you try the bald test. Shave your characters( because the hairstyle is usually the best way to tell characters apart, especially in anime), and if you cannot tell the difference in your characters, then you have a problem. Don't get me wrong, I like anime/manga, but the style irks me sometimes. Which is a shame, because when anime/manga gets it right, it is really great( "Monster" does a bang up job of making the characters look individual and human). Thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial, and I am hoping artists will learn from it.

You just made me draw! O_O
That's an achievement I tell you!
You also made made me draw it so that it turned out great!
And now I've got an OC!
I've never been able to draw even acceptably well due to my lack of understanding proportions... This helped me a great deal! Thank you for being alive!

I hate anime. Just happened to be obsessed with one of the series. (I often contemplate my actions and ask myself the serious question OMG WHY.)
When I first started drawing humans I started drawing anime style. Now I SERIOUSLY wish I hadn't. Your tutorial was amazing.
Sometimes, I do get lazy and try to draw anime style because that's what popular. But I end up drawing the eyes human size and the nose and mouth to realistic it looks uglier than a shovel.
Sometimes I want to go ADHATFSYTGDSHBHAUDDHDGDGB. MOST TIMES, I DO.
Any advice?

Try something different? Thats really the only advice that makes sense. Draw a face realistically. Copy another style. Just stop with the anime and see what happens.

Thanks for the advice, anyways.

whenever i draw eyes, it ALWAYS looks like they are staring into space. even if they are looking sideways! any tips?

Well, I noticed that most of the pics in your gallery were done in the style of that show. I personally don't feel like that style is all that expressive or flexible, so you might want to try drawing from life or in a different style to see how to achieve the look you want...?

THIS HELPED ALLOT!
its funny how you can think that you can draw something pretty well and then realize the flaws. BUT not in a bad way it like helps make you better yeahhhh like that U3U
i like actual took notes in my sketchbook i think the best point i tried to highlight was "just because you can draw it quickly doesn't make it good!"
but yeah just thanks allot for that it helped out~*brofist*

Look at some photos of necks. Especially pay attention to how much length is appropriate between the chin and the shoulders! And maybe look at what kind of things are in your neck (arteries, larynx, pharynx, etc). If you know what the purpose of the neck is, its is a lot easier to draw it

So I've only been drawing for about a little over a year now and am now really serious about improving my art. This is only the second tutorial I've read and LYKE oMFg BBQ Sauce!!!1 After doing the little circle and line trick a few times in my note book I've noticed a great improvement in a matter of moments! (before I was just eye balling everything). XD
Thank so much for this, I'm going to keep practicing faces before I move on to bodies. You rock my socks off, thank you thank you~

No problem XD Though these are techniques that a lot of artists use... its not like I invented them, so don't give me credit for that hehe Keep practicing!

Looked at all your tutorials~
I wish I could show them to EVERYONE, quite honestly. EVERYONE NEEDS TO SEE THEM D:<
Especially people who think drawing in anime style is an excuse to disregard basic human anatomy e_e
They're extremely helpful, I think. Well done, and thank you for making them.

This was a pretty good tutorial, I needed help with noses. Those ugly things are so troublesome to draw. Also, anime doesn't have the same faces, that's just stereotyping; didn't really need to be in the tutorial.

Anime faces make me tremble with rage, so it had to go in!

Great-Emperor-Steve In reply to shingworks [2010-03-17 20:20:41 +0000 UTC]
that's a bit exaggerated over a drawing. There are tons of unique faces in anime, I don't know why they should make anyone rage but regardless that preference doesn't help the tutorial.

shingworks In reply to Great-Emperor-Steve [2010-03-17 21:08:03 +0000 UTC]
Haha, well I guess that is just my opinion! Look at the types of faces that anime fans tend to draw, and look at the faces that students of observation draw. Big difference! Anime teaches you to oversimplify or overexaggerate without teaching you why. I know this from the experience of having to claw my way out of all the bad habits I picked up from watching it. Since its my tutorial, its not like I'm going to remove that bit, but of course you are free to disagree with me.

Great-Emperor-Steve In reply to shingworks [2010-03-17 21:44:17 +0000 UTC]
nice to see someone who's open to disagreement but just want to say that anime doesn't teach you any of those things just like how cartoons don't teach us to caricature and simplify for no reasons. Fans of any medium draw that way 'cause they're just copying the proffesionals with no understanding. Students of observation can fall into the same pitfall.

Wow, that was amazing! Thanks for that, you explained everything in a way where you weren't lazy and just said, 'this is how you draw eyes, mouths and noses. Good luck!!!' and you;re left thinking, 'What just happened?'
Very nice. It encourages me to keep on trying no matter how much I suck. I like your style (Ps If I wrote anything that doesn't make sense I'm sorry. I got a headache)
