this is a very good tutorial, so i see why its so known here in DA.

though this may seem off topic..what bugged me strongly is your first part of your tutorial. i understand the generic animu poses are overdone, and not the way things should be, but i hope you're not trying to ass out every anime artist does that, realizing how there's a lot more styles labeled 'anime' that isn't huge, shiny eyed jail-bait and actually follow along anatomy and such.

i also noticed that you.. ahem, 'degrade' anime often in your tutorials (the expressions-tut for ex). not many people seemed to care, and maybe some didn't bother to comment, but i'm sure there was people have been offended by such words.

i know you're trying to be funny, and probably not your intent at all, but it is unsettling to read things like that for the first time since i consider many styles to be anime. bug-eyed or not. i even find many cartoon styles along with avatar: last airbender, to be considered 'anime', since there's more to that term, then just that 'bad stuff'.

shingworks In reply to DA-Critique [2009-12-30 14:31:30 +0000 UTC]

No, you're right, I do degrade anime a lot, and not just because I think its funny. I really, really dislike it. Regardless of it being a valid type of art expression that has its influences on other styles, I do think I'm allowed to have my opinion on it and say it in my own work if I want to...

DA-Critique In reply to shingworks [2009-12-31 00:19:37 +0000 UTC]

i understand in having opinions, but i guess at the same time it feels like an attack to the underlings who do draw and like anime since you did post it in a tutorial and to the public for a 'guidance'. (i too, am having an opinion here also lol)

maybe it should just be taken into thought to not be so critical of a style since there's obviously should be more of an acceptance to all forms of art, no matter how bad. the most we can do is help them improve and not draw the same poses or bug eyed characters, rather then degrading the style for being sucky.

what 'm trying to say is, it's one thing to say something sucks, but another to tell the people to never do it in that style, or to imply they suck or w/e if they do so.

I think I mention in another tutorial (or maybe this one) that I dislike anime because it gives people a false sense of confidence. A lot of people can draw anime and get the style and succeed without learning any of the basics of anatomy or composition or anything, and that is the reason I hate it so much. It took me nearly 7 years to get out of the rut that I'd been stuck in thanks to that style and learning an assload of mistakes. Obviously good anime exists (I am a huge fan of Miyazaki for example) but it really is a pit of quicksand for the beginning artist.

DA-Critique In reply to shingworks [2009-12-31 04:19:09 +0000 UTC]

oh don't get me wrong, there's tons of anime styles i do dislike a lot. and it's indeed the ones that draw the same things over again and don't bother to study actual anatomy or anything for that matter, and that their eyes are soulless and they got pointy hair with no sense of direction... those definitely don't need the attention they have especially with other better styles out there. (i've also been trying to be less 'anime' and learning from realism if anything, though not changing my style completely however.)

but more or less it's hard to say anime sucks since not all artists who has their style termed 'anime' became famous through arrogance. i'm sure they learned and practiced things from anatomy to backgrounds to perspective. in fact i'm sure some if not, many learned anatomy and things first and stylized their drawings to look more anime.. or they are trying to fix the way they are drawing right now as we speak. we just don't see those people here so much.. then again maybe i notice or look for a lot of the good anime styles so that the crappy ones don't cloud my judgment.

i'm just strongly hoping you're just dissing those desu styles and not the entirety that is anime. i didn't mean to offend in saying you're a bad person for doing so. i hope that at least is understood.

No worries! I'm not offended to have a conversation

And no, I'm not putting down the people who know what they're doing. For example, I freaking love *gueuzav 's work, and he is pretty anime influenced. Most of my favorite artists are anime influenced, in fact. I just want to discourage people who think that just because they can draw anime that they can just stop improving :\ Like I said, its a bad influence on beginning artists, obviously the folks who know their stuff won't run into any problems when emulating that style.

I know this comment's old but lemme gravedig

I totally agree with what you're saying here, about people thinking that they can stop improving. When you pick up a "super ultra deluxe how to draw anime/manga booktopia" and you read through it, there's tons of good info about how to skip past proper proportions and then there's stuff about how to perfect your abilities. I think, like you're saying, that a lot of people get into drawing anime and they figure that if they can draw things that look similar to people they're good enough. Instead, they should be constantly working to improve themselves. Rendering textures, proportion, perspective, backgrounds, animals, etc. are all very deep topics. From what I know of myself and the community, art is a constant struggle towards perfection. While anime or cartooning may be cool, I guess the end goal is to be able to draw as realistic or stylistic as we want.

DA-Critique In reply to shingworks [2009-12-31 13:00:56 +0000 UTC]

that's a relief to hear! XD i like Gueu's stuff too, and it is indeed anime-influenced (love the lush colors he use and his dynamics).

but yes i know what you mean by that bit. i've had my share of running into those type of people who think they are all that just cause they can do anime. i should actually find the time to go comment them too. heh.

i think its safe to say though, that if anyone who wants to pursue art or just get better should all learn the basics of anatomy and what not before they choose a style or stylize too much. because i think even cartoon styles and others can also be lead in the wrong direction if they don't have a proper foundation.

(i know some people who have a really 'cartoony' style where they draw necks as thin as twigs and almond shaped heads with a real.. 'twist' in anatomy but they say it's their 'unique style' and it becomes almost impossible to even critic. maybe it is a style.. but then i have to question it. lol i can't really say names but hopefully you got the idea. )

also: thank you for hearing me out and having the time to reply back!

Just to check.... Because... OHHH MAIII ! You are O_o!
Whatever, can I ask you something ._.? Am I mentally sick to find difficulty when reaching the shoulders? ._. AM I ??? ?
Plus to get a brain damage with where to stick the arms when the trunk is already done ._.?
Do I have to kill myself ._.?

shingworks In reply to HPCS2 [2009-10-15 01:10:34 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you are totally mentally damaged :C

Haha, no, theres nothing wrong with you. I'd really recommend looking at some skeleton pictures, that way you'll get some idea of where the arms have to connect (it doesn't make sense if you put them higher or lower). And just to see general proportions. Maybe get naked some time and just check out how your own torso works XD That really is the most basic and correct way (because I'm assuming your torso is functional)
