uha question , Is this material you use heat tolerant. (IE heatgun) I have a fabric known as Fosshape and am Looking to make Pratical Simple casual cosplay wear My challenge is in designing a helmet with a visor part like yours that doesnt contact the forehead yet stays on the head.

Which of the materials are you actually talking about?

it is heat resistant if you have many layers of it. otherwise it will melt (I had insulation foam underneath, so that would clearly melt)

Ok, you need to help me cause I am desperate. I need to make a vacuum form machine, every aspect, save for the most important is covered, a heat source. I cannot use an oven, or a stove, so...any suggestions ?

So you already have a heat source? What is it exactly?
This is how I built the vacuum former: [link] step by step. This is the cheapest version possible. It won't last you too long, true, but it's easy and fast to make and it doesn't cost you that much. Basicly you can adapt it to any heat source. I worked with the worst possible, a cooking stove... unequal temperature all over the metal sheet I used on top of it... but eventually it worked and I was happy with the results...
If you want to build something more professional, here, Volpin's vacuum forming machine is just great!

If you are patient enough, I can send you these days some photos from a book I have, which also shows you exactly how to make a vacuum former. The book was published in the US, so I think it will help you a lot, because it tells you where to find stuff.

Please send me the pics. There was a mistake on the message, no I don't have a heat source, THAT is the problem. And yeah I tried Volpin's and...well, let's just say I am lucky enough the plugins in my garage still work. Do you need my email?

you're welcome. there is a chapter in that book about vacuum forming, but the whole book is really interesting, although published in the 90's, I think...

Well, it has been MONTHS! Almost a year, but I think you'll be glad to know that about 2 weeks ago I FINALLY pulled my first Vacuum-form project. It was smooth, it was of my metal hammer, it was excellent, I used my oven and a vacuum, but still came out great. Thank you again for helping me out, your tutorial was MORE than excellent.

*_* Waw, thanks for the tutorial, but i guess, my bitter parents won't have it that i build things like that. *sigh*
Ah Angelique is a friend of mine. Funny how small the world is ^^ Indeed we use a lot of yoga mats here in our cosplay. But the texture of yours looks very different. There are less air bubbles in the inside of yours (from where you cut the edges to fit them smoothly together).
And i think it's acrylic paint that doesn't lose it's shine. ^^ That's the one i usually work with and haven't had that problem either.
Good luck with remaking this costume. I love it very much

Hehe, I am lucky that my parents don't live with me, otherwise my mom would go crazy over heating the plastic on the stove >.>
Well, the yoga mats I bought were very cheap (3 euros each) and the texture is somehow similar to that of craft foam (but way lighter). I think you can find it in stores like Decathlon or sth... And I know what you mean, the yoga mats I use at pilates at the gym look different. Heavier and with more bubbles. It's like more plastic, the ones I have are more foamy.
Unfortunately the only golden spray I found was the graffiti kind. Actually, if you ask in the stores they will make no difference between the graffiti ones and the acrylic ones. I used acrylic sprays as a base for Warhammer miniatures and they seemed a bit different.
Thanks a lot! I know the new way of painting it will not be as spectacular (brown base and golden paint as drybrushing), but at least it will last...

I love how you make certain things. I actually got a few questions >_<
- You said vacuum forming. You have such a thing in your house? ; It's not something i would imagine everyone to have.
- I also was wondering what kind of foam that is you're using. I've seen several german people work with it now and it sparked my interest since i have not spotted this material in any shop in my country yet (for as far as i know). Do you have an exact name for it?
- And last XD I love love love the golden metallic paint look. How did you get it this shiny and smooth?
Sorry if it's too much questions.

ShinjusWorkshop In reply to xxmykaxx [2012-07-19 12:21:05 +0000 UTC]
Thanks a lot!
Well, let's see:
- the vacuum former is actually home made and it was VERY cheap. I am not saying it is sturdy, but it lasted while I needed it. Here you have photos of how I made it and what materials I used. [link] The 3mm thick pressed wood broke eventually because of all the pressure, so I am planning of making a metallic one and using an electric stove to heat the plastic.
- the foam I am using : I heard cosplayers calling it yoga mats. I think this is how Angelique Heikens called it. She said she used it for har Eurocosplay costume from last year.
- the paint: actually I do not reccommed it!It was regular golden spray (for graffiti and stuff, I guess) and it looked wonderful at first, but then it darkened really ugly and now I am remaking my whole costume because of it! I really liked it because it actually had that metallic look to it, but it only lasts for a little time. AT least the ones I tried. It all looked so shiny because the HIPS (vacuum formable plastic) is actually very smooth and the craft foam I painted it with many layers of white glue to make smooth.
I know a cosplayer from Germany who used golden spray and she said she didn't have the problem with the darkening of the armor. You should ask what she used, maybe she can give you a good tip. [link]
Let me know if you need to know anything else.

I will be using this when I re-make my Athena Cloth. Thank you! I did want to ask--is the visor also attached with velcro?

ShinjusWorkshop In reply to Celyddon [2012-06-12 17:30:56 +0000 UTC]
Yes, velcro also. But make sure the pieces of velcro are not very small, or else the visor will keep on falling on your face

Will you be doing a tutorial on the wings? That is what destroyed my own Cloth--they were way too heavy and I couldn't wear them on stage without ruining the armor.

Yes, I will. Mine weigh 2 kg alltogether, but when I have to lift them the force on my arms was a bit more than that... Ok, next to come... wings!
