Hello. This is an awesome tutorial! But I do have a couple of questions: What type of silicone did you use? (I've only seen liquid silicone rubber which seems to lack the same consistency of the kind in your photos.) Did you use a silicone thickener with this type of silicone and then apply it to the clay sculpt with a knife or something? Thanks!

yes, the RTV silicone usually is rather liquid. I had a thixotropic agent for it, you can find it in the shops that sell the silicone. I first applied a layer of the liwuid silicone, to make sure it gets all the details. it's called a beauty coat. and the then I put the thick silicone on, this one risks bubbles from time to time, so you need to be careful when using it.

i have a question! i plan on making gloves (elbow length) that will thicken my fingers and forearm quite a bit- should i use the foam method you mentioned? instead of making the latex 1029380123 layers thick?
thanks!!!

It really depends on how thick the gloves need to be. I only needed them to be slightly thicker than my own hands, so latex was a good choice in most parts, since it can be resistant in a thin layer (2-3 mm). The foam is better for bulky parts (1 cm thick and more). If you have thin parts, it's ok as long as they are not very large. I hope this helps.

That is really helpful, thank you! Would it work if you made them long enough to go up to the elbows?

I think it doesn't matter, but it would be surely more difficult to make them like that!

So is it possible to move your hand in that glove?

ShinjusWorkshop In reply to miasaka [2014-01-27 21:04:58 +0000 UTC]

yeah, sure, it's very soft! Imagine having your hand in a thick baloon (not inflated). it's the same material. stretchy and soft. The only problem is that your hand sweats inside, the material does not breathe at all. You need to put in some baby powder to be able to put your hand inside.

Neat, I never would have thought to do gloves this way. Your end result looks super awesome.

I'm curious though, why bother with the silicone bit? I've made a latex mask before with just a two part plaster mold and it worked fine; I thought you only needed the silicone sleeve for resin casts? Isn't mold-making silicone crazy expensive? @_@

I don't find plaster molds that reliable... I mean... that are more than ok, but sometimes they make bubbles, you have to be careful with them all the time not to get scratches, not to break, they're heavy... most of the molds I used for that costume were plaster... plus... I was brushing black latex on... the one on silicone was WAY better. the ones in plaster I had to wash and brush a lot to get the white from the plaster off. It is more expensive, indeed, but I used a small quantity of silicone per glove (~ 200 grams). No need to tell you how much I used on the masks...

Thanks for sharing. It's going to be really useful for one of my future projects. May I ask where you managed to find flexible urethan foam? Thank you.
