The GameA Death Note Fan-fiction
Disclaimers: I don’t own Death Note or any of the subsequent characters. This fan-fiction is an alternate universe fan-fiction, created with the idea that Ryuk did not drop the Death Note for Light when he was in high school, but rather waited until six years later. Ages in this fic: L is thirty-one, Light is twenty-three, Misa is twenty-five, Mikami is twenty-seven, Near is eighteen, Mello is twenty, and Matt is nineteen.
Ages are based on Wikipedia and my lacking Math skills.
Any pointing out of facts that pertain not to my story but to the actual Death Note storyline, beyond ages, will earn whoever points them out a solid smack and a reminder that this is an alternate universe fan-fiction. Yes, I am still working on Abstraction.

Prologue: The Notebook
---
A notebook that had fallen from the sky was probably always a source of suspicion.
Not that he was one to question ‘divine intervention’, as it were, when it decided to poke its head out and say hello.
The notebook in question had made its way to his apartment and was now laying open. Fingers flipped through the pages of rules, marked ‘How to Use’ so that even a simpleton would know what they were for.
“The human whose name is written in this note shall die,” the voice said calmly as eyes scanned the page. “Name and face… heart attack… Shinigami… I take it that’s you?”
Laughing deep in his throat, Ryuk nodded slowly as he regarded the male in front of him. He hadn’t used the Death Note at all, but had merely been biding his time. More than likely it had been to get more guidance about the book before he began whatever it was he planned to do with it.
“That’s right,” Ryuk finally agreed once his laughter had stopped. “You’re a smart kid.”
“I pride myself on it,” the human said quietly as he continued thumbing through the book. “So… this rule about writing the cause of death within six minutes and forty seconds… I’m going to assume that means I can influence the way that people die beyond heart attacks and I have that much time in which to specify how, exactly, they should die?”
“Bingo.”
“Interesting.” Biting on the end of his pencil, the human began looking at the book again. “You already told me that you wouldn’t directly help me. But you will answer yes and no questions with nothing but an affirmative or a negative, correct?”
“I guess I can do that.”
Laughing, the man shook his head. “All right. Well, considering this rule about preventing accidental deaths by having to have both the name and the face, I’m going to assume you can make someone commit suicide but not murder anyone or cause the death of anyone else. In other words, you can only kill the victim, so there’s no way you can get someone else to murder someone whose name and face you’re incapable of getting.”
“You really are smart.”
“Wrong,” the man said as he pointed his hand at the Shinigami hovering behind his chair. “I’m a genius. And I’ll prove it, too. I’ll prove that I’m better than everyone.”
“Got a grudge there, kid?”
“Maybe,” the human said with an idle shrug as he flipped to the first blank page and opened his laptop. “But first things first… the reason I haven’t yet used this notebook is that I wasn’t sure if it was genuine. I suppose I always could have just flat out tested it, but if it had been a hoax I would have been grossly disappointed. Now that you’re here, I have basically undeniable proof that this is real. In fact… I feel that I’m practically obligated to use it.” As he spoke, his right hand held a pen poised over the paper, while his left hand typed at the computer’s keyboard at a speed most people couldn’t accomplish with the use of both hands.
As he found the list of criminals he was looking for, he began methodically writing down names. “I’ll leave these at heart attacks for now. I just want to get someone’s attention, and this is bound to.” Beside each name, he wrote the cause of death – ‘Dies of a heart attack on January first 2010 at 1:00 AM GMT’ – and continued down the list, filling out each hour in military standard 24-hour format until he reached the twenty-forth death.
“If this notebook really does work, these people should start dying every hour on the hour for a day starting at one AM tomorrow. They’re all in random parts of the world, so it’s bound to attract some attention.”
“They’re all criminals,” Ryuk said as he peered over the other’s shoulder. “You lookin’ to get rid of crime or something?”
“No,” the man said with a wicked grin. “And none of these criminals are on death row. However, I don’t feel they deserve to live. Therefore, I’m getting rid of them. Criminals are merely the easiest to get a hold of right now. That way, if my plan doesn’t work as I wish it to, which I doubt, there can be no accusation of someone plotting against the innocent.”
“And if it does work?”
“Then I won’t stick with heart attacks. Those are too… boorish.”
Ryuk laughed at the man’s choice of words. “I think it’s a good thing you picked up this notebook. Humans are so interesting. But you better be careful. Someone’ll be onto you before long.”
“And who will they send after me?” the man asked in a condescending tone as he looped one arm over the back of his chair and stared evenly at the Shinigami. “I can find the name and face of any detective and policeman in the world, no matter how they try to hide it. There will always be evidence somewhere that someone forgets about. No matter who it is, I can find them.”
“You’re confident.”
“I should be.”
“What if you can’t?” Ryuk asked with a grin. “Say even your mind is unable to find even the smallest scrap of information regarding your pursuers. What would you do then? I mean, you could always trade for the Eyes, like I told you…”
“There’s nothing that I can’t find,” the man said with a self-satisfied smile as he closed the notebook on the desk in front of him. “And there’s always a way. Even so, I’m completely protected. I know for a fact that there is no documentation with my name or face. I took care of that a long time ago.”
“I know your name.”
“Well, I know that,” the human said in exasperation. “But you don’t count. I don’t care what you know or don’t know because you aren’t going to help me and you’re going to make me figure out everything for myself.”
“Pretty much.”
“So really, you’re just here for me to confirm suspicions,” the man said as he resumed surfing the internet. “That’s good enough for me. It’s more help than I’ve had in the past.”
Ryuk cackled to himself as the click of a lighter filled the room.
“You’re even more interesting than most humans, Mail Jeevas.”

Interesting... *rubs hands together and grins evilly* Very well written, especially not dropping any hints that it was Matt who found it until the end.

Yay! Really, I was writing it with the intention of people -thinking- that it was Light until the last line... last two lines, really, though people on dA don't really seem to notice small details most of the time >>
Glad you like it so far
