Description alchemy sketch, taken into ps, rendered in greyscale, colour balanced, overlayed colour, and then texture dropped in for the bg and the armour.

I've left in the artifacts from teh original alchemy sketch. i wasnt really going for something uber rendered or anything but this came out and im pretty happy with it. first major piece in a while

I love it, but I'd love to know, what odes Alchemy Sketch mean?

Alchemy is a free drawing program that is more about exploring shapes through random generation. you should look it up. Its hard to use but it really stretches you

Do you know how to make custom pull shapes for alchemy? Great work here man, love it. Im really getting into this style myself.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

shinypants In reply to Jeris82 [2010-05-30 22:57:29 +0000 UTC]

basically you need to make vector shapes (reasonably simple ones i think) and then output them to a pdf and put them in one of the directories in the alchemy shapes folder.

I used alchemy originally to create my own. I had to clean them up extensively in Illustrator first though.

Jeris82 In reply to shinypants [2010-05-31 02:55:28 +0000 UTC]

Ah thanks, I see. I dont have illustrator right now which sucks ><
I try to save as a pdf in photoshop but that doesnt work. I have inkscape but not familair with it. I can make them in alchemy itself like you said but, like you said as well, they will need a lot of cleaning.

When you made/make your shapes, are they in perspective at all? You said simple, so i am assuming no.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply, I dont get many lol. I appreciate it.

Your work is great man, really love it.

shinypants In reply to Jeris82 [2010-05-31 03:01:54 +0000 UTC]

i think the essence of the pull shape is the overlapping nature when you combine several shapes together. So i guess you'd have to use your imagination afterwards for perspective and cleaning up etc (by cleaning i mean simplifying). You can however create like small shapes and export them individually from alchemy and use them for pull shapes. All im saying is that if you create some cool picture with alchemy and want to use it as a pull shape it will probably kill alchemy because it will contain several thousand onbjects which it will try import. thats my understanding of it anyway.

and thanks again man. im not great. i appreciate the encouragement though.

Yea I learned that the hard way like a half an hour ago lol. I made some simple one page mirrored shapes that seem to be working very well. I was worried I would need to re install illustrator.

Ill post them up in a bit. Theyre not great but, its a very useful and easy way to make alchemy work for you how you want it to.

The different shade method I can see working a bit too. Darker towards the back, or under and working forward getting lighter. Thats a basic approach I guess. I wont get involved with directional light sources too much with such an unpredictable method I think..... Like working top to bottom dark to light for example. That may be more difficult......I THINK......

Keep it up man, get some new shit up too, you have a lot of potential if you arent utilizing your abilities already, as far as the "Industry" goes IMO. Though I know very little myself, just based off of your work compared to other "Professionals".

Yea tell me about it. I'm in the academy of art right now. Learning a lot thankfully.

Whats your area of interest regarding a career involved in art? Any specific areas?

shinypants In reply to Jeris82 [2010-05-31 05:16:39 +0000 UTC]

uh probably just about anywhere that they'd take me i think

I'm working with a friend at the moment on our own iphone games and that is just a buttload of fun really. I get to be as creative as possible. I can kind of do a bit of everything but im not really a master of any of them unfortunately. Im getting a whole lot more into the painting and drawing as you can see. I'm finding that its helping me stacks because its filtering through my whole design process which is really cool.

I really love looking at mood sketches and story board stuff. I seem to be facinated with mecha and armour too. I'm just working my round to creating them both in the same drawings.

How bout you?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jeris82 In reply to shinypants [2010-05-31 05:43:48 +0000 UTC]

Oh cool man, what part are you playing in the iphone app? Seems like everyone is doing that kinda stuff now. Micro transactions in free to play games is really big. Not sure if thats exactly what your doing, just sayin. I myself dont really know a lot about that enough to be interested.

I love storyboards too. I dont know how good I am/could be due to inexperience. Ian McCaig has some great videos out that help structure a story and storyboards.

I am really fascinated with mecha/biomech stuff too because A.) It looks badass and 2.) I cant friggin do it as well as I can other things or ad well as I want to.

My main interests aside from just studying art and getting as good as possible are:

1.Concept art (For games and films)
2.3D Modeling and animation (Traditional sculpture as well)
3.Expressive/fantasy art

I have been drawing/airbrushing for years. I mess with zbrush, photoshop, corel, maya, alchemy and XSI but I need to master those for the field I want to go into for my major really.

I really love movies/games/comics. Violent, fantastic and intense preferably lol.

Im really loving school too actually. Which is odd for me to say, to say the least. Tons of shit that is helping me, that I didnt know I should be learning.

I chat with like 1 artist on here and yea, draw on and off all day

shinypants In reply to Jeris82 [2010-05-31 05:58:14 +0000 UTC]

Its basically just me and a programmer. So I do all the art. you can check our games at www.photoncreations.com

So really i can do a bit of everything, but more recently ive just been finding that painting and drawings has become a huge passion for me. I would love it if i could get paid and do it full time but its not a reality at the moment. So i'll just keep going until that time.

I think my ultimate goal is for a task to be set before me and for me not to freak out as to whether or not i'll be able to create something cool out of it.

Where are you studying?

its only a slight thing
on the helmet the shading seems to resemble a cross, but its probably just me

shinypants In reply to IamLD [2010-04-27 00:48:51 +0000 UTC]

I cant really see it personally but thats ok. not that i would be adverse to putting anything like that in there. I think if i were to do it intentionally it wouldnt be as subtle as it is. As it is its most likely a product of the mirror effect from alchemy
