Egg coloring - the natural and easy way (when I can do it, you can do it too! ).

FAQ:
Are they still eatable? - Sure, after 10 min. of cooking they are all colored and ready to eat.

Red Onions usable too? - Yup! I added some red shells too. I don't know for sure but I think if you ONLY use red ones it will color them in a more reddish brown.

How much shells do I need? - Use at least 1 kg onions for 10 eggs. The more you use, the deeper the color.

Do shells and herbs change the eggs flavor?- Nope, when the egg's shell is fine (no cracks) they still taste like every normal cooked egg.

But we use tights not rags! - You sure can use tights too. They are easier to wrap around BUT since they are more elastic you have to wrap them really VERY tight around since the cooking water can create air locks and ruin the patterns.

I'm sorry for any spelling errors or mistakes - I don't really have alot of time at the moment.. am working alot. But I still hope it helps ^-^ !

Happy Easter!!!

*edit* A DD? Omigod! I just nearly fainted ! Thanks so much to ~demoncherry for suggesting and ^shelldevil for featuring it. If I had known I'd have tried to write it in a more proper english. I will totally polish it a little when I have time to do so. THANK YOU!!!!!

Wow, I've never seen anything like this o_o
The result looks really interesting/unique. I might have to try this~

Just a quick question tho-- the eggs are raw at the start, correct? They are actually hard-boiled with the fabric wrap and onions together?
Just not sure what I will do with all the extra onions afterwards!

Yup that's right, you boil them with this wrap mix around them.
That's the problem. I never know what to do with all the onions. I don't really use them to cook normally since I prefer green onions.
So my mom always has to deal with them XD .

about the extra onions, I was thinking about that myself too but I remembered when I worked at a grocery store there was a man that always picked up the produce trash(stuff like corn husks usually). He said he fed them to his rabbits or something and they let him keep them for free. I might go and ask if I can do the same with the onion shells that are already falling off.

Do that work with spinach and beet root / other natural dries too?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

louvis In reply to SanSlugdog [2011-04-22 18:26:44 +0000 UTC]

It should - spinach will give nice green colour (leaves gotta be dried for best result), and beetroot - light red. Same with red cabbage or blueberries (if you want blue coloured eggs). I've posted somewhere on this deviation what materials can be used for that technique, unfortunately I'm too lazy to copy/paste it or write it again from memory

I know that i color my eastereggs always this way, but i'm courious if the other dries also make such nice patterns.

I don't think it would result as patternish as with the onions. I thought to try to combine the "onion-wrap" with spinach in the boiling water. Will try that next time.

I'll try it out these days, since i have to boil eggs anyway (and color them with these stuff)

It wasn't mine. It's a pretty old method actually (though most people don't use the onions as pattern-source). But thank you

My people do that but different. Use the red shells of the unions purely in the water, to give color. Get old stockings, put leaves on the eggs or flowers, tie tghtly in stocking end, tie on both sides tightly and keep doing that. Then put that snake long rope of eggs into the red die water of onios and after cooking, vola! It's vry fun and great actually. U can get coor green from grass...etc. We love it the natural way :3 There are many other forms too...it's great fun, as u know Im sure I'll maybe try this if i find the time XD Thanks!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shiranui In reply to Orlia [2011-04-22 16:55:19 +0000 UTC]

Yup, that's the way most people to it. Though few try to use the onions directly on the egg. Both ways are great and pretty ^^ .

Orlia In reply to Shiranui [2011-04-22 21:18:00 +0000 UTC]

Totally true But recently i've come fond of the bought colors that are rubbed on after boiling the eggs, then it becomes sticky, that's when u stick gold, silver or gold shinny stuff on it and looks apsolutly colorful, shinny and great hehe They end up looking like expensive marble rocks or something XD Had great fun but ill try ur technique one day too :3

What are those dark things in the water floating with the wrapped eggs in the photo of the pot on the stove?

You'r the first asking me this - which I'm very surprised about (good eye!). This are my old coffee pads. I added them to intensify the color (and since I now have a Nespresso coffee machine I was glad to put them to good use).
