Description The LMR-03 is an advanced electromagnetic weapon designed by Decimal Arms for both planet side and zero gravity engagements.
Unlike other weapons, it fires slugs of high density alloys, such as tungsten carbide and depleted uranium, at velocities up to several times the speed of sound capable of penetrating the toughest body armor.

After several years of trusty service, Decimal Arms has hired a new head of design and updated the design, now separated into an OICW and an assault rifle.

The OICW’s main purpose is, in combination with high explosive air burst ammunition, to take out lightly armored enemies trying to hide behind cover. Emphasis on trying.

The assault rifle fires the above mentioned alloy slugs. Utilizing new materials and technology, we were able to shorten the barrel length of the assault rifle, without losing a significant amount of effective range or penetration.

I have been alright, adulthood kicking in and stuff so I can’t really upload as much as I used to but I am still trucking along! Thanks for asking.

Bullpups have internal mechanisms in the buttstock - that's the whole point of a bullpup. So, just put the butt plate right up against the magazine and it'll be a proper bullpup. As of now, the pistol grip is positioned awkwardly far forward; bullpups don't have any stellar weight balance to start with and non ergonomic grip doesn't do it any favors either. The barrel should go back much further than that.

I take it it's a railgun type of linear motor? Coilguns have, ya know, coils in them. Not having anything in around the rails is actually a good idea because the slug produces a ton of fire and plasma while traveling down the barrel, as the material is vaporized off the slug by the electricity. Letting the gases escape freely precludes wonky gun dynamics, but at the same time it's sort of a hazard, so it's probably also good idea to have this plasma directed away safely. On the other hand, the space could be filled with powerful magnets, and so you'll be able to get away with far smaller electric currents through the rail and the slug, to the point that there actually won't be any plasma to begin with. You still gonna need a high voltage system though, to push the slug through what's essentially a ~0% efficient electric motor.

The gun doesn't have anywhere to place the battery (large enough one, anyway), so it probably goes into the mag. But then you don't need the battery indicator because it would be designed to last at least as many shots as there are slugs in the mag. If it's not - it should be, having the gun become a paperweight even if you still got ammo left just because its internal battery died would really suck.

It's nice that the sights actually have appropriate buttons on them, although digital elevation/windage adjustment is completely superfluous, since there's physical knobs for this right next to them - and who would even use digital interface when analog one is available? You don't exactly need those in zero G anyway, just zero the sight with adjustment bolts and locktite them.

You don't exactly need heavy projectiles - just really fast ones. And launching stuff really fast is what electric guns do. With that in mind, "several times the speed of sound" isn't very fast - normal real life gunpowder assault rifles launch bullets at over 900 m/s which is right about mach 3. Real life railguns are known to launch dumbbells at mach 20.

Just want to say something on the rail gun part, those require a lot of fucking power + they are designed for naval ships and are giant I just wanted to note that

Raid-Ho In reply to captainicefire [2019-07-26 03:59:17 +0000 UTC]

You can make tiny railguns, and they work just the same. Efficiency is abysmal, yeah - that's what you get when you hard-accelerate something, you only get good efficiency while cruising. But as long as you don't vaporize the projectile in the barrel, you're good. You can in fact use a separate ablative conductive slug with a non-conductive projectile, the slug will vaporize and create a plasma cushion which will push the non-conductive slug with minimal heating.

Ah wouldn’t a coil gun be a bit more efficient tho? Like a hybrid coil gun it uses pistol ammunition but speeds it up to be much more accurate and faster and it’s a bit more Space efficient

Raid-Ho In reply to captainicefire [2019-07-26 13:56:05 +0000 UTC]

Coil gun is more efficient compared to a railgun that vaporizes its projectile from extreme amount of current going through it. But otherwise no, it's the same thing, just different approach. Electric guns don't use mechanical projectile assist because there isn't anything worthwhile to gain from it, and using pyrotechnic propulsion defeats the purpose of having an electric gun. A solenoid push assist is particularly nonsensical because it is just a separate linear motor.

Thanks a lot! I couldn’t agree more, really. That’s exactly why Black Mirror was such a good show, because all the tech was so realistically well integrated.
But regarding this, the base design was done by Master Gecko; I felt so inspired by it that I wanted to make my version of it.

Good design and looks pretty practical outside of the standard 'tuning fork' bit.

Hey, I got some weapon designs that you might like, perhaps we can work on a collab sometime?

Hey don’t hate on the tuning fork D:
It was very XM25 inspired. Also I didn’t want to have a standard kinda grip guard, so I went with this

Sure, send me a message and we can talk about it

I've been on Spacebattles for too long, and having 'tuning fork' style railguns really gets on their nerves because there is nothing to protect the rails from undue outside elements. Let's just say that they're of the 'practical firearm' type of people.

I'll send you a note ASAP then. Just to warn you though, my firearms are generally 'Pimp my Gun' based.

Ohhh I thought you were talking about the grip guard. But this makes more sense, haha. I wanted to stay true to the original design regarding the “barrel”. I do think I could’ve put a protective sheath around it or something, though.

MisterArtMaster101 In reply to Shockwave9001 [2019-07-24 08:07:22 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, even Mass Effect doesn't have tuning fork railguns. They simply have a more traditional barrel around the rails to keep them from getting damaged.
