Description It's been a while since I did not make a matte sci-fi scene and here is "The Terminal".
This one is fully inspired by a French artist I discovered in the following book in french (sorry...): [link]
It's Paul Chadeisson I should credit him for the composition and the brushes he kindly shared, check out his website: [link]
Have a look at his gallery, it's really good.

Nevertheless, everything has been fully made by myself, no like for like elements. I added many things, details and textures.

Here are the stocks I used, mostly for the left part of the plant:

Planet texture from the NASA site:

All the rest has been painted or from my own stock.

Hope you guys we'll like it.

I was never a painter, though I wish I took classes. Do you freehand the drawing? or use stuff like a lasso tool?

Shue13 In reply to arisechicken117 [2011-04-20 18:13:39 +0000 UTC]

To have neat edges and I alwselect a zone with lasso tool, or feather. I'm not that good at the moment to really freehand. To make straight line for making buildings, I keep shift pressed and paint with radient colors. I dont speed paint at all, but I'll tend to practice these technics. You can also paint zone and erase with the lasso tool. I really like to paint over picture. The true thing is practice and practice again.

I doubt your urban photography are pretty poor mate, but lately I started the profile of my step-brother on deviantart and he's pretty good at that, I'm sure you'd be interested in his work. Have an eye on his Flickr profile [link] just the time he develops his profile here.
He gets some freaking angles with buildings and shadows, I really want he gets bigger as a photograph so I'm gonna push him a bit here.
Let me know what you think about his work mate, it would be cool.

Sweet! Are you planning on going to college for art or graphic design then? Or have you already started?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shue13 In reply to ValencyGraphics [2011-04-19 13:54:12 +0000 UTC]

Ah ah!! I'm almost 35, so college is really behing me. I'm a professionnal in international logistics, mate!! Graphic design is a hobby and maybe a professional change in my career later on, dont know.
I'm completely self-taught, I wish i could get back in time and do what you mention but I cant.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ValencyGraphics In reply to Shue13 [2011-04-19 21:19:12 +0000 UTC]

Awwww... :/ Well, at least you do have a talent there! I wish I could illustrate that well. I'm going to college for graphic design, but I don't have the "artistic" talent like this. Hopefully, some classes will get my hand to go where I want it to. Did you take any courses for your talent or is this all just "doodles"?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shue13 In reply to ValencyGraphics [2011-04-20 18:52:00 +0000 UTC]

That's the most important thing, the "artistic talent" will come with practice I'm sure.
Personally, I did not take any courses, I grabbed some good tuts here and there and trained myself.

ValencyGraphics In reply to Shue13 [2011-04-20 22:27:11 +0000 UTC]

Do you think I could trouble you for some good ones to start with?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shue13 In reply to ValencyGraphics [2011-04-21 06:39:27 +0000 UTC]

You dont trouble me, dont worry. Hard to say 'cause I started two years ago but I just bought some magazines like Advanced Creation Photoshop from the Oracom group for instance. You should have an international version I guess. Magazines are good because you have detailed and valuable tutorials with psd files and even stocks. It would be my best choice. After you can pick some good tuts here on DA from good artists. Just type in the search box "planet tutorials" or else and you'll find immidiately tones of tuts. What you'll have to do is to sort the best ones from the crappy ones. It truly depends on what way you'd like to go, digital painting, space art, matte painting, photomanip or else. So many fields my friend. Youtube is a pretty good media as well. Same thing, type photoshop tutorial and here you go mate.

ValencyGraphics In reply to Shue13 [2011-04-21 15:18:16 +0000 UTC]

Magazines are definitely one that I will have to try more often. I've gotten a lot of help with tuts on here, too, for sure. I was more wondering about how you were able to draw out the stations and ships and what not. I've always had trouble with objects in space/the glowy trails behind. Planets and stars, not so much.

Shue13 In reply to ValencyGraphics [2011-04-21 16:42:27 +0000 UTC]

Wow I should make a tut for the whole picture in fact, lol!! A bit too long to explain you should go bit by bit. Try first planets and stars and then you'll go further and further.

ultimatly looking space art avesome just i dont get that building shapes in the background ... they are as big as the netire planet, makes a bit unreal feeling in me, anyway the colours, the simplicity and force of compsition, the details on that so call terminal are great i am glad you made this

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shue13 In reply to GabrielGajdos [2011-04-18 14:42:48 +0000 UTC]

Thx mate, yeah about the planet and the building the proportion is a question of distance here. The building is pretty close, nevertheless massive whereas the planet is much far away but could be a simple satellite planet so smaller than the planet you're actually on, lol!! i like this impression as if the planet will almost hit, even crash onto the city.
