Description
Marshian and I did a night lighting set for 3delight that did well, so we decided to do it again for Iray. He had an interesting idea to save render time, which is using point lights and adding IES profiles to them rather than spotlights. They're very easy to use because he ALSO had the idea of attaching them to long pointers so you can tell exactly where they're aiming.
I knew I'd get to use the Deathstalker in something.
Rendered in Iray in Daz Studio Pro, postwork for compositing canvases. The dress is a one-off from Marvelous Designer that may at some point be part of a freebie.

Is there a manual? Trying to figure out how to move the light presets around the scene.

The groups are selectable in your scene tab, like anyother lights.

So just grab the group, move the whole thing. Repointing, though? What's the best way to use those long pointers? having a little trouble if I need to rotate or adjust the position a bit for away from center figures.

In that case, you select one light at a time from the group, and when you rotate the light itself, the pointer will point to where the light is aimed. You can't do that with the entire group at once because the lights are all aimed at the center of the scene (roughly).

Cool idea. Gonna have to add this one to the wishlist.

I really liked the 3DL version, so will definitely be picking this up. I tend to find Iray is much less happy with dark scenes than 3DL was, so maybe this will solve the problem.

Looming Deathstalkers are f*cking terrifying. Well done.

Do IES profiles on point lights make any difference in render time?

Not compared to a point light without IES, I don't think. But they're faster than spotlights with or without geometry enabled, and they're faster than mesh lights.

I don't usually use point lights, I'll have to quit neglecting them.

The long pointers are a great idea. Figuring out where the direction of the point/IES light can be a pain.
