Description So a little heart to heart from me to you.

Hope I don't seem to overly emotional in this one but I guess I really just wanted to tell things for once how they were, no joking around, no overly-cynical explanations. So yeah there you have it, experience is often the key and there's nothing wrong in failing. Hell I even recommend to fail. If you fail that only means you actually tried it.

EDIT: Okay, because apparently Deviant Art hates me, it reduced the resolution of most of my elongated pictures. That includes also these tutorials. And because a small resolution on a picture full of words is kinda shit, I decided to also upload it to Imgur: i.imgur.com/XAzKMXS.jpg

Looking at this makes me realize that experience can be different for everyone. Your scenebuilding and overall post process quality has clearly improved since your last pic.
While experience has made my picture qualities becoming higher as well (funnily enough I also got my gmod in 2010), I feel what I've improved more on is prop customization and in-game building and posing.
Personally I feel what I need to work on more is scenebuilding. If you have any tips on that, or other things, that'd be awesome.

This is a nice explanitory comic though, and made for a good evening's read.

Well explaining scenebuilding kind of presents a problem for me because my base reaction is "Well...I just do it" It's the same with posing, there's nothing higher going on, it's just me doing stuff that I've been doing for over 2000 hours and that feels right for me. I guess what I can say about scenebuilding is this: First of all the Props that somebody uses are obviously extremely important, they have to fit to the artstyle of the characters in the pic, while also providing good enough textures to not be blurry as hell. For my photorealistic-ish stuff I often use "Detailed Scenebuild" which can be found on the Facepunch forums (where they also provide Download Links). Aside from that it's just picking up the pieces and creating something that fits with the theme you try to achieve, creating the ground on which everything else stands. It's the floor, the backround, it's to the left, to the right. Of course using maps like gm_black is also very helpful as it doesn't have any base map-lighting and therefor allows full control of lighting, while also providing a blank slate on which the scene is created.

Perhaps I'll try to make a full fledged tutorial on this stuff because I kinda feel like I'm talking out of my ass right now ^^'
Though I guess it's like any other skill you can pick up. Do it often enough and you'll be able to just do it without much trouble.

A tutorial, like you suggested, would be very interesting. Whenever you have the time and motivation for it, that is.
Could you possibly give me a link of this "detailed scenebuild"-thingy though? Could be useful for, especially, historical battle motives (a thing me and a friend of mine specialize in).

Thanks for the other tips too, by the way.

Was able to find it: facepunch.com/showthread.php?t…

Should be pretty exiting for you, looking into the thread they seem to have updated it with even more castle-props (I had already used a few existing ones for my Dark Souls pic)
And I guess I'll be looking into creating a tutorial for all this nonsense after I finished some stuff. Should be pretty interesting to create
