Description

The Enterprise shifted her position up by several hundred metres and powered forward towards the Wyvern.

“We’re moving, Captain.” Demora said from the Helm

“They’re shields are up, Captain!” Commander Denvis said from Tactical. “That refracting bubble trick took them by surprise, they’re response time is rubbish.”

“Fire!” Captain Harriman said from the centre chair.

Denvis keyed his board and Enterprise unleashed her weapons.

------------------------

Wyvern shook under the first volley from Enterprise, pitching Ensign McKormik to the deck.

“Mr Tatum, what the hell?” XO Kinnaird shouted as the second volley hit causing sparks to fly out of an unmanned console.

“Enterprise is firing phasers on Level 5, sir!” Tatum replied, gripping the side of his console.

“That’s against regulations for wargame scenarios.” Lieutenant Dupree called back.

Wyvern rocked again as Enterprise launched another attack and Tatum said the shields were at ninety-four percent.

“I’m aware of the regulations, Ms Dupree but Harriman never thought much of that particular set.”

“Captain, we can hit Enterprise’s forward shields with a full phaser bracket, should knock them around a little.” Tatum replied tapping his board furiously.

“Comms, hail them.” Captain Fynix said as he stepped forward out of his chair.

“No response on any frequency, Captain.” Ensign Bolf replied.

“Open a channel.”

“Channel open, Captain.”

-------------------------

“Still no tactical response from Wyvern, Captain. Their shields are ninety-two percent.” Commander Denvis.

“Nothing ever rattled that bastard. Maintain fire, all shield points, I want to see some damage on those computers.” Harriman replied looking towards the large panel behind his tactical officer which normally showed the Enterprise’s Master Systems Display but was now showing the simulated damage for the Enterprise, but the outline of the Wyvern was dark.

“And someone find out why that’s not displaying the Wyvern’s tactical computer.”

The Enterprise launched another heavy barrage of phaser fire towards the Dreadnought before Lieutenant T’Vek said Wyvern was broadcasting. Harriman nodded for it to patched through.

“Attention USS Enterprise, you are in violation of Starfleet Wargame Regulations. I am ordering you to cease fire immediately otherwise I will have no choice but to consider you a Starfleet vessel under foreign control and act accordingly.”

“Did they get the briefing packet?” Lieutenant Sulu asked sarcastically as she pitched the ship forward to close the distance between them.

“He’s feigning ignorance, he never could handle being out-manoeuvred.” Harriman said as his eyes glanced back at the board and the Wyvern’s darkened silhouette.

“Maintain fire.” Harriman replied.

The USS Wyvern NX-2016, is a highly classified prototype Dreadnought based on the Excelsior space-frame for a story I've been writing set in 2296. Taking four years to build and plagued with design/technical issues, she finally launched from a secret facility near Andoria for testing in the isolated Trafalgar System, February of 2296. She was Starfleet's first test-bed for the heavily classified and compartmentalised Quantum Slipstream Drive Program despite the majority of the Admiralty disapproving of both the ship and the program. Highly automated with a crew of 420 and outfitted for combat, systems built into her would later be used on several starship classes to follow her.

Now I want to know WHY ENT-B is firing level 5 phasers?!  Some mistake?!  A rogue Engineer, perhaps?!  A spy on-board ENT-B who is set on sabotage of the new project of the advanced dreadnought?!  Romulans went after the then prototype, Prometheus, in Voyager episode, 'Message in a bottle'.  Starfleet can't seem to keep new prototypes as secret.

Maybe a bit off-topic but the best dreadnought reworking of the Excelsior (to me anyway) is the Curnow class.  I am not sure if it is still up on pages by 'kelso323' but it is a three-engine variant based on the Excelsior Mk I (NCC-2000) design.  The aft part of the saucer section is extended drastically and two engines are positioned downward while the third engine sits on top of the extended aft, placing the main impulse engines closer to the tail end of the ship.  It's one of my all-time favorite fan designs.  I wish Eaglemoss would do a diecast mini-model of it.
