Description

The deck bucked under Harriman’s feet and Demora was thrown from her station, her head striking the deck as Mission Ops 1 exploded in a shower of sparks. T’Vek keyed the comm and called a medical team before moving towards the helm.

“Report!” Harriman yelled as the ship continued to buck under the Wyvern’s onslaught.

“Forward shields at seventy-three percent and falling rapidly!” Commander Denvis shouted from Tactical while fire leapt from the food replicator.

“They’re hitting our hard-points with level six phasers!” Denvis continued; “Criss-crossing arc impacts are draining the shields.”

“Evasive pattern Sierra-Three, all phasers fire!” Harriman shouted as the ship continued to buck and heave.

Denvis began keying his station as T’Vek slammed the heavy cruiser into the evasive pattern, exposing the already weakened starboard forward shield hard-point to multiple beams of the Wyvern’s phasers.

“SHIELDS COLLAPSING, CAPTAIN!” Cadet McHale shouted from Damage Control just as the shields gave in and Wyvern’s pulse phaser assault let up only to be followed by several rapid-fire phaser blasts, one breaching the shield bubble and tearing into the flagship’s ventral saucer section .

The dual-manned tactical console exploded, throwing Denvis and Lieutenant Jiinx backwards into the master systems display, sparks, flames and smoke filling the rear of the Bridge as Ensign Midka and Cadet McHale grabbed extinguishers and moved towards the conflagration. Breach klaxons sounded and main power cut out, plunging the Bridge into the flashing red-hue of the alert indicators.

As the Wyvern’s two-punch phaser volley continued, Harriman was thrown from his chair, managing to grab the Navigator’s seat in front of him. He tried to hold himself upright, ready to shout orders before panicked screaming from behind him filled the bridge and the twisting, guttural tearing of metal above him. At the rear of the bridge, Cadet McHale was trying to extinguish Denvis, the man engulfed in flames and as Harriman looked upwards, he swore.

“COVER UP!” He shouted, Lieutenants Squio and T’Vek glanced upwards before throwing themselves away from their consoles. Harriman dived on-top of Lieutenant Sulu, covering her with his body as the bulkhead support gave way, crashing down onto the Navigator and Helm consoles, sparks flying as it crushed them. Lieutenant Squio wasn’t as fast as T’Vek or his Captain and was unable to get his foot out of the way quickly enough before the beam crushed it, pinning him to the deck while he screamed in agony. Two secondary consoles exploded, and the damage control board detonated into a shower of glass and flames, showering Cadet McHale in glass and metal shards, the young man collapsing as another part of the ceiling supports collapsed around him.

Harriman pushed himself up on his forearms and started to shout.

“EVACUA…”

Something slammed into him and the chaos of the hell around him turned to black.

The USS Wyvern NX-2016, is a highly classified prototype Dreadnought based on the Excelsior space-frame for a story I've been writing set in 2296. Taking four years to build and plagued with design/technical issues, she finally launched from a secret facility near Andoria for testing in the isolated Trafalgar System, February of 2296. She was Starfleet's first test-bed for the heavily classified and compartmentalised Quantum Slipstream Drive Program despite the majority of the Admiralty disapproving of both the ship and the program. Highly automated with a crew of 420 and outfitted for combat, systems built into her would later be used on several starship classes to follow her.
