Hermes is Twilight's first born and the kid she appreciates the least unfortunately. She didn't dare admit it but she desperately wished Hermes was born a unicorn. Due to this, he never really bonded with his already slightly distant mother. Then, Dumbbell's learning issues re-manifested themselves in Hermes, and lead to him becoming a high school dropout around his sophomore year. Again, Twilight was extremely disappointed. Today, he's a bit of an alcoholic and survives day to day doing odd jobs and his football career, but that only happens in the autumn.
