Description 3D Printing is so cool!

I have received the first shipment of items from my new shop. This is so much fun! I build a 3D model, then upload it to their site, order, have it printed out and mailed to me as a real physical object! You loose a little detail on the itsy bitsy stuff, but I was surprised at how much I was able to get.

It's my love of crafts and my love of 3d combined! Now you can get that item you've always wanted... customized jewelry, miniature doll props, and well just about anything really! I even saw someone selling real life sized car engine parts on the site.

The item above was commissioned by Gabihime from the forum, Den of Angels. ( a BJD forum)

You too can commission custom made items. You approve the model before it goes to print. then you can either buy it on my shapeways 3D printing shop and have it mailed to you (shipping is free worldwide, yeah!), or get the full finish, where I buy it from the shop and then paint and detail it before sending it to you.

Items range anywhere from 5$-300$. It depends on size and detail. As an example, the above item is simple, yet large so it came out to be around 75$

Check out my premade items here! [link]
Other models printed:

The largest I can make something is 70x38x58cm, If it needs to be bigger I can make it in multiple parts, but it gets expensive pretty quick. I recommend smaller items or smaller scaled items. I tend to do 1/3 scale and smaller.

I used to make and sell cosplay accessories made via 3D printing but I am focusing more on my bjd stuff now.  Doing cosplay stuff for dolls still though.

Okay I just (as in 20 min ago) got into 3D printing and I am skeptical to join in on this yet. I am hoping you can convince me by answering some questions if that is cool. They keep mentioning a shop. Does that mean I have to make a shop? Because all I want to do is make a few models and items for now. My funding is also tight so how much would somthing like this cost me? I wanna make a few BJD items. I did look at the link but I found little on the subject. Hope this isn't too much trouble. Thank you

Are you asking about shapeways? or 3D printing in general? I can't remember if you have to open a shop, or not on shapeways but its no biggie if you do, all uploaded items are automatically hidden from the public so your shop would be empty unless you go through and mark your items etc.

If you hollow out your models it makes them a lot more affordable, 1-2mm walls usually do best. Remember it is all volume based. The bigger and more volume your model holds, the more expensive it will be.

You could always sign up, and upload your models to see if they are in your price range.

I was asking about both but your answer below gave me the answer I need. I will look into it. When you signed up did you have to give bank info? I am skeptical to do so but I think I will take the risk and try it. Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions^^

I think I gave my paypal, which is necessary for any sales. I have been a member and using shapeways for over 2 years, and have had no security or site issues.

Guess i haven't seen that episode of this yet... was it a later season one? No I use shapeways, too exspensive for me right now and not high enough quality and variety of materials per machine on home models. Hope to have one sometime.

How much does that cost to 3D print something???

silverbeam In reply to IniStrife [2013-03-29 20:08:40 +0000 UTC]

depends upon the size or volume and the material you print it in.

This idea is wonderful and it looks so freaking awesome!!!
Can I ask honestly which side you are using to order and which program to make the 3D-models?

Wanted to make a gift for a friend of mine and with that it would be much more easierXD!!!

which side? not sure what you mean here. Oh site! shapeways. Don't you hate typos?

I use lightwave 9.6 and use shapeways to 3d print them. (They are a super pain, but only place that is affordable online)

Ah well, I was too but I am pretty new to 3D art. Anyways, I think I pretty much have the hang of it. I was just wondering if I could upload the file to shapeways to 3D print it. My brother said you can't take blender files and use them in anything but I'm really hoping I'll be able to upload my file once I'm done with it.

This is awesome O__________O. I just saw your post for some figure designs on the forums and decided to check further into what you were doing. I had no clue this sort of thing was possible to individuals. I have got to get some stuff made now. And your work is fantastic! I know denofangels too! My sister used to be (may still be) obsessed with dolfies.....maybe now I can...for her....

Bottom line: beautiful work! You have opened my eyes to something I thought wasn't possible.

I'm sure some have trickled into such places. 3D printing is still a little more exspensive then regular methods I believe... give it a few more years. It will be awesome.

FurryXXI-02 [2012-06-21 00:38:33 +0000 UTC]

That is so awesome!! I really need to give anyone a commission! Anyway, I don't want to make it bigger, I just wanted to make a figurine of my character from my Midas Adventure story series, about the size of a goblet. I know where this comes from (thingiverse.com, of course), but it costs a lot, depending on the size! You've totally nailed me! I'm a game CGI freak for all of the indie 3D fantasy games!

silverbeam In reply to FurryXXI-02 [2012-06-21 05:10:14 +0000 UTC]

Actually I do my printing with shapeways. Rapid prototyping is quite a lot of fun. It's still pretty new so 3D printing is going to be on the expensive side depending upon size and material.

Man, that is AWESOME! And very interesting... Now you've got me thinking. lol

Couple of questions:
1) Say if one wanted to use this process to comission, oh, something like a lightsaber hilt. (Usually only around 11 inches long or maybe 30 cm, by about an inch and a half or 4 to 5 cm diameter) Could it be made hollow, with some sort of removable plug on one end? (I ask that cause I'd want to put electronics inside. lol)

2) How strong would you say this plastic is? Is it something that breaks easy when dropped, or is more durable like PVC?

Very interested in the possibilities with this! Thanks!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

silverbeam In reply to Ranma-Trekkie [2011-06-16 05:34:45 +0000 UTC]

It is very very durable. I was so surprised how strong it was. I made a hollow sphere with the walls less than 1mm thick with a hole at the top and bottom and gave it to all my friends and asked them to squeeze it as hard as the could. It barely bent near one of the holes and that was it.

I could certainly make it hollow with a removable end so that you could put electronics into it. I made a mini Katana that way so it could lightup. there is also a clear material you could hollow and put as the blade but that would be expensive.

Do you have your own design? I have designed a few lightsabers in the past.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ranma-Trekkie In reply to silverbeam [2011-06-16 21:19:27 +0000 UTC]

Wow. That's awesome, I didn't think it would be that strong! Sounds perfect for a lightsaber hilt.

I wouldn't be worried about the blade, I already know a place that sells blades and hilts and all the electronics, but to do a custom hilt there are really only two widely known options. One is to make it out of PVC pipe (very inexpensive, but it usually doesn't look very good IMO), and the other is to have it custom machined from metal (as you can imagine, that gets VERY expensive).

As for the design, I have a couple of ideas. Nothing very complex or super detailed, and it's really only a partial design. Plus I don't have the cash to pursue this at present, though when I do have the money it's something I'd be VERY interested in doing.
