Edit: I forgot to mention that when we are experiencing fear, our pupils dilate as a natural response to let in more light. This is all in preparation to see more effectively should we need to fight back against whatever is frightening us, and is initiated by stimulation of the sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system. You don't need to know all of those confusing terms, but it's helpful to remember them, haha.

So basically, our pupils will contract whenever we see something unpleasant but not entirely frightening to us. They will dilate when we feel scared and the flight-or-fight response kicks in. They will also dilate when we look at something that appeals to us, as mentioned in the tutorial. For example, if you look at someone you're in love with, or when you look at food if you're hungry. LMAO.

The pupils will relax when we are feeling calm.

Putting aside psychological influences, also remember that light intensity plays a significant role in pupillary response. You know, the whole:

Lots of light = contracted pupil

Dim light = dilated pupil.

You may notice that a lot of artists prefer using pinprick-sized pupils to indicate fear. If that's how you roll, no worries. I'm not gonna force you to change your way of drawing since I do it too. SOMETIMES IT LOOKS BETTER FOR SOME REASON. Ahahaha I really make a bad teacher.

IN REGARD TO THE ANIMU THING. Please don't put stupid comments like: "OMG HOW COULD YOU SAY THAT ABOUT ANIME?!?!? IMMA GO LISTEN TO SIMPLE PLAN NOW BRB."

I did not DISS anime. MY ART STYLE IS MOSTLY ANIME ANYWAYS FFF.

I just mentioned that I prefer having a mouth and nose that are actually distinguishable, instead of two dots that could be mistaken for well-placed moles or freckles.

I'm very well aware that the anime style I'm pointing out here does NOT encompass the entirety of the anime and manga genre. I'm very well informed of the fact that there is a PLETHORA of anime and manga series out there that have a more realistic style, that seems to border realism. I'm just stating my opinion towards the generic moe characters you see floating around. And no, I certainly don't hate moe drawings, since a lot of the artists I watch draw exclusively in this way, and I love their art. If done well, it's nice. I'm actually a fan of pretty anime art if it's done correctly, haha. But I also LOVE LOVE LOVE painterly and/or expressive styles like that of *Phobs and *makani .

Everyone has their own way of making their art, and this outline I'm presenting to you here is MY way. Well, one of my ways, lol.
