I do not hate the Pony Creator! It is a cute game, and I have absolutely nothing against it. However, it's not a good place to get references!Pony Creator: [link]

You wouldn't hate something made using it though. Would you? My character for a Youtube review show will be using it.

I totally agree, this is what I told ponies who didn't know how to vector... About 7 months ago I thought the pony creator was just about exactly like the show. But when I actually used a ponycode for Twilight, I thought to myself, "That doesn't look like Twilight..."

i use pony creator to get a basic idea of what i want my pony oc to look like, but after that i just draw the pony myself

Wow... I've never noticed how different they are. You really can't tell until they're right next to each other. I don't use to pony creator for my OC, I only use to make random ponies out of boredom. But I can see how this can cause a problem if you're just starting to draw ponies. I'm still not perfect at pony anatomy. Awesome job for posting this! :3

I should mention how I'm pretty sure the colours you used aren't spot on, but I still understand completely what you're getting at.
I mean I don't think I'm that great at drawing ponies (they've been the most difficult for me next to Sonic) but drawing based off of the show with screenshots definitely helped me understand them alot better than what the pony creator would've.
It wasn't as clear to me the first time reading the desc. (and I wouldn't have read it again if it weren't for me commenting) but it should definitely be well known that it's not the greatest drawing/vectoring reference.
Thanks for putting this to people's attention.

she made it for free and shared it and worked super hard. of course its not perfect. if you dont like it you code one yourself with your specifications. then everyone would be happy. or just draw them on your own.

I don't have anything against the game. It's very fun! Of course it's not perfect. I don't think it ever could be perfect! That's why I wanted to point out the differences so that people learning how to draw and vectors don't make the same errors as the game did.

The Pony Creator is best used as a beta template for a character. You lay out the basic details for character design, and then you perfect the character design to your liking. That is at least what I do.
You see, while the Pony Creator is a good tool for making a beta version for a character, it is indeed very flawed. The cutie mark often comes out garbled and distorted, and the coloring can be rather off.
But hey, what do I know?

This is simply why you should not use the pony creator to make a vector of your character from. Using it for inspiration is absolutely fine, as long as you're aware of what needs to be changed.

well, even the ponies from the show are not perfect. for example, they have many animation errors. very often pegasi wings are missing, another one that i saw is one time was rainbow dash's whole face dissapered! (LOL! i am so obbservant!) i also saw fluttershy with RD's cutie mark

Derpwave In reply to mlplover44 [2013-05-29 04:24:18 +0000 UTC]
Yes, these things happen. The animators can't waste time looking at every single frame in every episode. Does that mean we have to adapt to the obvious errors? I don't think so. Especially since the ones in Pony Creator are not unintentional mistakes, but simply exist due to a lack of accuracy in the templates. Also, good tracing includes correcting the animation errors.

Would you be very upset if I took some of your suggestions for the updated Pony Creator? Specifically I've been trying to experiment with a different way of determining the outline color, since I'm well aware the current implementation doesn't look very good, and what you've said has given me a new idea.

Why would I be upset? Feel free to implement any of what I have said in future projects. If you ever need help with show-accurate anatomy or colors, feel free to ask questions. :3

generalzoi In reply to SilverVectors [2013-05-27 19:08:21 +0000 UTC]
Honestly, show accuracy is a distant concern to simply making the game itself work as well as possible with as much variety as possible. That's what I have to spend all my time on, because every little tweak can affect lots of seemingly unrelated things in the game (for example, the inconsistent stroke width is because everything shifts during body morphing, and I have to make the outline wider in some cases so it's not so thin it disappears in others). But things are getting better, I think: [link]
Thank you for the offer! It's going to be a process to make the game the best it can be.

These new colors are looking much better. I can imagine it being hard to get things consistent. What people need to realize is that a game like this can never be as perfect as a version done by hand. :3

Nice advice! Although I don't hate Pony Creator at all mainly I use if for just creating a base.
For example: [link] This was created from the Pony creator base colours. (You know what I just noticed they nearly have the same colours)
But see it really depends, the colours from ponies already from the show and OC's created by us are essentially two different areas. For example, when someone does go creating their OC using it, they look for what they think suites them. But then you have the ones where they are already created. It's a difficult topic to discuss without and large amount of opinions.

SilverVectors In reply to Budgeriboo [2013-05-23 04:47:40 +0000 UTC]
The pony creator just adds some darkness to the color to create the stoke and shadow colors. It does not look very good. Rarely, depending on the color, it can look okay, but you will get a better result if you manually select stroke and shadow colors for OCs.

So which one looks better? [link]
Because I guess there is a massive difference as the saturation is different. But still it's really depends on the person.

Actually the Fluttershy is from the show, that's the colors you want to use and that's the real Fluttershy you want to use. Use your own colors, on the right and you'll make Fluttershy too bright. You want to make the exact ones from the show, that's how you get perfect vectors. So you don't know what you're talking about.

I tried creating an OC in pony creator, but was never satisfied, partly because of the limited mane and tail options. I guess I must dot his the hard way and learn how to draw and/or vector.
The there's also the fact that a lot of people produce these bizarre OC's with a rather Mary-Sue feel.
