what's this, an actual story?????? (jokes aside, i've been planning this scene for a while, only seems fair to write something to explain it!)

What started as a gradual snowfall had transformed into a blizzard as strong winds began to blow through the mountain pass, whipping snow into Eli’s face, who shoved his hat further down on his head to shield his eyes. Eli, along with his horses Clint and Aspen, had been caught out in the open by the poor weather and needed to look for shelter. Fast. These were no conditions to continue in. Through the whiteout, Eli scanned for the other side of the valley, trying to get closer to the trees and out of the howling wind.

Being closer to the woods offered some shelter and safety, but not much. Deafened by the howling winds and blinded by the snow stinging into his eyes, Eli didn’t notice the growling coming from the trees to his left. But his horses sure did. Eli felt Clint tense up and begin to nervously dance around from underneath him. Aspen’s lead rope became tight as the grey horse refused to move forwards. Partially concealed by the blizzard, a pack of wolves crept towards the team. These wolves must be awfully desperate to be out in this weather, normally they didn’t cause much trouble for the experienced rider.

When Eli noticed the source of his horse’s stress, Clint reared up as the wolves drew closer and Aspen began thrashing and bucking from behind him, in an attempt to dissuade the wolves and break free from his lead rope. Eli fought to control the grey horses, who were now fully in panic mode. Seeing things were going south, Eli attempted to grasp his repeater as he vainly tried to control his team. He managed to grab it and pull it out of its scabbard, but in doing so was unable to retain his grip on the reins and Aspen’s lead rope. Aspen thrashed free and ran bucking into the whiteout. As Clint defensively reared again, Eli went tumbling from the saddle, luckily with his repeater in hand as he ungracefully landed in the snow. As his horses bolted into the whiteout and before he could regain his senses, the wolves turned their attention to him, now the easier target.

A wolf lunged towards Eli as he scrambled up from the snow in an attempt to gain some sort of defensive position, other than laying vulnerably on the ground. It grabbed a hold of his forearm to try and drag him back down, and Eli felt the wolf’s teeth pierce through the fleece of his jacket and puncture the skin as he tried to tear himself away from its grasp. The others circled closer, looking for an opening. Eli jerked himself away from the wolf and lunged for his repeater, laying nearby in the snow. Quick as he could, he fired a shot to try and scare the wolves off. Clint and Aspen had been trained not to react to gunfire, so the noise shouldn’t have scared them off further. The wolves backed off enough for Eli to get some distance from them as he desperately tried to seek some cover. He picked direction at random, disoriented from the blizzard and his fall from the saddle, and fled into the blizzard, hoping that he picked the direction that his horses had gone.
