Description
It’s the 1st of May! Time For Mermay again!
This one is something I’ve had in mind since Full-Autopsy - the artist who created the Mer!Wing design I’ve used time and time again- passed away in January this year. I wanted to draw something in tribute to her memory.
Originally I wanted to do this in sumi ink and be very stark. But the biolumescent coral and moonlight sea were a spur of the moment idea. It could use 1000% more biolumescent coral but I only had so much patience and fluorescent colours.

Nice done! bioluminescence is so awesome. Do you have special colours to draw that bioluminescence glow or do you simply let the glowing parts white? I could need some blue-glowing colours for my mermaid, which is a deep-sea mer.
Happy Mermay to you!

Thank you!
For the bioluminescence I used some references from google to help pick the colours. The best tip I can give is to graduate the colours, Lighter in the center, the more saturated, brighter colours towards the middle and edges. I found that fluorescent and bright colours work the best for the darker glow/luminescence colours on the edges. I added some white in the very center afterwards on a few to accentuate the center more. I also layered some fluorescent blue on top of the darker areas, sort of like reflected light but a subtle way. I roughed out the outlines of the coral and the glowing parts and coloured the glow areas first.
If you've got a specific deep sea fish species in mind for your mer, or even if you don't, look at some photos of deep sea fish to see how their biolumescence works. Or use the coral/other glowy animals/ plants for a more fantasy look. Whatever you think would suit your Mer the best. Don't be afraid to experiment a little on scrap paper to refine or develop the bioluminescence you like the best!
