Ok, since a lot of people ask how I colour my work, I made this tutorial. I hope its easy to understand. I broke the picture down into steps showing the process I use to colour and shade a picture.
Basically all the info is there. If you want to colour like this then my most important tip is to use 5 or 6 shades. The more shades you use, the better and more three dimensional the picture looks. Don't use too many shades though cos you don't want it to go too dark.
As for the fur, I hope I showed clear enough how I do fur like this. It's simple once you get the hang of it and looks really good. It's taken me about 3 years to perfect it basically cos I couldn't find a tutorial on it.
And that's another reason I did one, to help anyone who is struggling.

If you have a go at colouring using my tutorial, please let me see!

Hope it helps! The grain of the paper does affect the colour lay down. Try using smoother paper or pressing a little harder and blending layers of colour to get rid of the grainy effect. Using softer coloured pencils helps too you're welcome!

Thank you very much for these tips, i will keep them in mind. Sometimes i am "afraid" to lose the colour effect i am aiming if i press a little harder so that's why i tend to press lightly.

Yeah I used to be like that as well. Hope you can find a happy medium with the pencil pressure!

I'd be interested to see how you colour too. It's taken me a long time to work out how to colour like this and I had no tutorials to help me. I really like how I colour now.
Thanks! I'm proud of that drawing, I'm glad I used it.

That's a good idea, I've done that too. There are videos on YouTube of me drawing Zorak and AvistA.
Its easy to make one. Just scan the pic at each stage of colouring, put them together and write under each one what it is. I can help if you like.

Silvolf In reply to Three-Stripes [2009-01-02 16:22:04 +0000 UTC]

Yeah getting the fur shapes right is also hard. It took me 2 years to learn this fully, I didn't have a tutorial but looked at how other people did it.
Good luck!
