Description
Welp, this took waaay longer than I had anticipated, but dang does it look good! This is what my art looks like when I don't slack off at all! Remember this, because it doesn't happen a lot! XD
I actually had a fun time doing this the past few days, even if it was frustrating at times. It took quite a few tries to get him to look like an actual Bionicle character and not an overly-caffeinated muppet. But yeah, for the most part, I enjoyed myself.
Secret Santa Art Trade for at the Bumbleking forums. Enjoy! Happy New Year!

Not surprising, considering Vezon is basically Bionicle Deadpool.

Kind of. I'd also get Ryan Reynolds to voice Matau, because he's got that smartass vibe that Reynolds has.

Yeah, there's a ton of mistakes all over the place. (Bionicle dudes are hard to draw. They're like bicycles with arms. >__>)
But I'm still pretty happy with it. XD Glad you like it! Thank you!

That is absolutely awesome! Thank you so much! I was hoping you'd pick that one. And yeah, I can see how it would be frustrating for you... your usual art style is slightly cute, and none of my art request options were cute in the slightest. You managed to pull through with a completely non-cute drawing. I like the modifications you made to the limbs. Out of curiosity, how much did you know about Bionicle before picking this request? I'm just wondering if you've had any prior experience, or if this was your first real introduction to the franchise.

Sweet! Glad you like it! I had a hunch that this one was the one you wanted the most, so I trucked through this one even though I might've been able to get the other two done quicker. Plus, one look at Vezon and I was like, dang, that looks like a cool villain. Must draw!
The modifications to the limbs weren't entirely intentional. Every reference I found seemed to be different from the next. And apparently he has actual claws in one of the video games, which looked pretty cool so I ran with it. So there's bits and pieces from lots of different pictures, and a lot of pieces that I couldn't figure out what they were for, so I apologize if it's not entirely accurate. But at least it's not cutesy! I'm not sure how Vezon would work in a cutesy style. XD
As for Bionicle, I owned one of the first-gen characters (the ice one, Kopaka? Is that his name?) back when they first came out. And I maybe, almost, sort of cried at the first movie just a little bit. >.> So I've always kind of liked Bionicle, but they've never been something I was super into.

Yeah, between the set, CGI commercial, comic book, and video game there were several different versions floating around. Three of them were pretty similar, but the video game version was somewhat out there. And yeah, the Toa Mata of Ice was named Kopaka. He's actually Greg Farshtey's favorite character. You probably haven't seen the 2008 remake of Kopaka Nuva, and I advise you not to look for it. It's ugly.
Was the scene you cried during when Jaller died? It kind of nerfed the whole thing when he was brought back to life, but at least that meant he could go on to become a Toa in 2006. Or did you cry when Makuta died? I mean, I'm sure you were sad to see such a hunk go bye-bye. (Spoiler alert: He wasn't really dead, and it was actually all part of a massive Xanatos Gambit that resulted in him possessing Mata Nui's body.) I have easily irritated eyes, which can be awkward at times when my eyes start to water during a movie... "Dude, are you crying?" "No, I just have something in my eye!" And then there are the times when I actually do cry...

SimonSoys In reply to Lewanut [2012-01-02 03:19:35 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, it was Jaller. I remember being slightly miffed when he was revived, like "oh, that was a good cry for nothing!" It seemed so sad and emotional back then- now I rewatch it and can't help but think how corny it is. XD

Lewanut In reply to SimonSoys [2012-01-02 03:40:03 +0000 UTC]
The second Bionicle film was somewhat better about corniness. Have you seen it? They kill a character off fo' realz. Then in the third Bionicle flick, they have disembodied limbs laying around a battle arena (although they don't actually show them getting hacked off). By 2007, they had a Bionicle set with blood markings on it. (Lego's official story was that it was never intended to look like blood, but insider information says that the designer that suggested adding the red markings was inspired by blood).
...and you probably don't care at all about any of this, since you're not as into Bionicle as I am, so I'm probably really annoying you. Shutting up now.

SimonSoys In reply to Lewanut [2012-01-02 03:56:37 +0000 UTC]
Nah, you're not annoying me! I'm probably not providing much of an engaging conversation since I don't know jack-diddly about Bionicle anymore (last I paid attention to it was probably 2005), but you can continue to your heart's content. I'll smile and nod like I understand what you're talking about. Hahaha!
I can't remember if I ever saw the second movie. I want to say yes, but I honestly don't recall anything from it. But I have to laugh at the "blood" thing. How can lego-people bleed?! That's kind of hilarious. XD

You don't know Jack Diddly? Oh, he was awesome! He voiced Mata Nui in the 2009 movie! Or was that Michael Dorn...? Anyway, you need to read up on Jack Diddly. He doesn't get the recognition he deserves. And you shouldn't feel the need to humor me. I have paid mental health professionals for that.[/failjoke]
As for blood, even if it wasn't technically blood, it was intended to look like it. And in 2006, there is a line in one of the books about the remains of a dead toa including a puddle of liquid that the character describing the scene didn't want to identify. Plus, there's the fact that the Bionicle cast was intended to be composed of biomechanical creatures, which meant they had muscles as well as mechanical parts. (As illustrated in the original three films.) So it's not completely illogical for them to have blood.

I still think that's funny. I've always found it perfectly acceptable that Bionicle characters were just little plastic people that did badass things. The idea of having to explain that with actual attempts at reasoning just seems silly to me. They follow no conventional physiology no matter what vague science-y explanations the creators might throw at them. XD
IDK, Bionicle toys were THE cool toy back in the day. They didn't need "blood" and "logic" to make them more edgy. They already were!

I think Bionicles are like LEGO dinosaurs. They were big and they used to be everywhere, but then they all died off when their theme was cancelled in 2009.

Little... plastic... No, no, canonically they're made of metal, and not "little" in the slightest. And, yeah, some of the explanations got pretty silly near the end. When the Toa canisters fell from the sky, it was because they were shot into the air from under the water! Mata Nui is the name of the giant robot that the Matoran universe is inside! The Great Beings weren't gods, they were scientists! It definitely took more of a bend towards science fiction than the earlier sci-fi/fantasy mix.
And I don't know about how "edgy" Bionicle originally was. On the one hand, they called the weapons "tools," and it was in the fourth year before they permanently axed a character... but on the other hand, they did stuff like give one of the characters chainsaws. Bionicle may not have been edgy, but it was different. It's like action figure customization for those with no crafting skills.

Cannonically they're metal? But they're always animated to look just like the toys! Maybe that's just the poor cg of the early 2000s to blame for that, but they always looked plastic in the commercials too. But I still hold that they're little, since the actual toys were about the size of my foot. (When I was last into the series, they were still hinting at the canisters belonging to the kid playing with them. They didn't add the Great Beings or scientist stuff until long after I was over it.) But not that any of that matters, is my point. Whether or not they're metal or normal-sized doesn't change the cool factor in my opinion.
Don't get me wrong, I still thought they were the coolest toys ever. Maybe it was how dark and awesome the commercials were compared to everything else at the time, but I used to think Bionicle characters were totally rad. Still are, even if the cannon is way too complex for me to follow nowadays.

Lewanut In reply to SimonSoys [2012-01-06 00:42:46 +0000 UTC]
Where did they hint at the canisters belonging to kids playing with them? I can't remember any of that in the comics, the flash animations, or the Mata Nui Online Game. And while I'm not sure how long the Great Beings were in the picture, I know that the Great Spirit was part of the mythos from launch-- the whole mission of the Toa was to wake the sleeping Mata Nui. And yeah, the CG in the commercials wasn't so great, but the reason they made it look as much like the toys as possible was that the commercials were selling the toys. In fact, that's why they didn't get much artistic liberty in the flash animations and comics. Lego wanted to make sure kids knew what the toys really looked like, in order to drive sales. From a corporate perspective, everything was to drive the sales of the product. However, in the direct-to-video films, the characters were somewhat more metallic (and the sound effects certainly suggested metal).
And yes, Bionicle sets certainly were the coolest toys ever. Hero Factory (Bionicle's replacement) can't lay a finger on 'em.
