Description
Just like in a cruel love story, the tree and the moon are destined to pass by each other every day with no hope of ever meeting. Like the girl you fall hopelessly in love with as you catch a fleeting glance of her hair. She walks away, never to return. The memory remains, but with a deeper sense of mystery; and dreams of what could have been, if only a chance was given.
Sorry about that, just had to get it out... and moving on.
OK, so here it is... There is nothing more I want to do with it. And I'm happy about it.
Materials used & time spent:
Done with 3mm hb and b mechanical pencil, 4b graphite pencil, a small amount of charcoal and tortillons for blending.
All together it took me roughly 10 hours.

Edit (10-28-11): I have added some contrast and detail to the mountains and foreground, and left the natural color for a more neutral tone. Nothing major, but I guess it puts my completion time closer to 13 hours.

The choices such as leaving the sky blank, and the lack of definition between the moon and the sky, were all intentional and thought out. I wanted to give the moon a sort of glow without resorting to darkening the sky. Same goes for the fading of the hills. As for it being day or night, I wanted that to remain ambiguous and up for interpretation, since the "when" was not important to me.

You had brought out a great piece of work I probably couldn't do later on... However although this is just great A+ is see a flaw, the light contrast. We as people when we see the moon, we usually expect it to be dark out, especially when it's that close to us. However I have seen the moon out in broad daylight. But there is still a good side. Don't try to change it, unless you could as easily as erasing and sketching in again. And, the shadows are off, making them won't require erasing. I recommend you sell things like this. so... I can't wait to see more!!!!

This... is amazing. The moon and the tree have so much detail in it. It is very realistic... however there are some things I would change... For example, are there any stars on this night? Also, some parts of the hill look a little off due to the light-dark contrast. But other than that, this is a great work of art. I would know that I would never have been able to do something like this. I hope you keep up the good work, and don't feel discouraged by my comments if you do feel bad because of them. I can't wait to see more from you!

I would just like to say that I still hate you for your skills... JUST SAYING. >:C ... ;-;
I love the detail you put into this, especially with the moon and tree. The moon looks like just that: the moon. I'd probably draw a circle with blobs on it in hopes that it looked like the moon. But, with the shading and texture of the moon you can clearly see all the features of it.
I noticed you still have a problem with having the area around the tree lighter than the rest of the piece, you still have a little halo around the tree, like you're scared of ruining it. I don't blame you, but it also ruins the background by doing that. The part of the hill to the left is dark, standing out and you can see all the detail you put on it, but as it progresses to the right the detail and shading practically disappears until the tree is gone, then you add more detail back to the hill.

It's such a realistic picture! I think first of all you're amazing for having done this by hand with pencil mostly without the whole page turning into a smudge-fest. I love the work you did on the moon.
I guess my only critique is IF you were trying to make it look like a hill just on the other side of the road that's very close, then you did great, but I suspect you were going more for a mountain in the distance, while showing some of the details? If so the only thing I can think to do differently is less contrast between the dark and bright colours on the left side of the mountain. Because of the 'focus' so-to-say, it makes it look like a ridge nearby. The mountain/ridge/hill seems a little disconnected from the left side of the tree to the right.
No stars? It's a cloudless night? Not sure how you would do that in charcoal/pencils.
Regardless of my critique, overall is amazing work and I could see this in a book easily!

Thank you for the critique! I didn't think I would get two! lol Anyway, I always deeply appreciate the different perspectives. And I do agree with everything you said. I think I just got frustrated with the background. I kept going back and forth between keeping it closer to the photo or just going by gut.. The sky was very much intended to stay that way though. From the beginning I wanted a very plain looking sky. It's suppose to be day time, and the moon is suppose to be like a vision or a memory. Fail I guess.

This piece really caught my eye because I've been working a lot with just pencil in my art classes recently and I've really just discovered everything you can do with it! Many people just use pencil for line sketches and then it's always erased but I love the fact that this piece is just in pencil and yet it's so complex. You have a wide variety of values + lights and darks which really help the piece look 3D. I also love the interesting landscape, the tree and the moon work really well together as a center focus so nice work there.
But - Even though the tree and the moon are so well done I just have to wonder why the background and sky is left so untouched. The mountains in the back ground almost look sketched like they're not quite finished. Other then that I'd say this is quite a spectacular piece. There's a lot of mystery behind it so naturally, the viewer is going to wonder what it means to you and what does the tree and moon really represent. Those are always fun things to think about once you've finished a piece like this, to ask yourself what it really means to you. You might find a different reason you created it then what you intentionally had in mind.
